If we ever had even a remote chance at signing him, then it is a grave error that we failed to do so. A midfielder with elegance and intelligence should always be the priority. Annoyed that people value insignificant or barbaric traits like mobility or 'steel.' We should want the best footballers, not athletes or thugs.

Just when I was getting to grips with him leaving, he goes and has a great World Cup.

Not sure whether we will feel his absence but he was great in Pep's system. Shame he is leaving.
He was one of the most important players IMO, that's why I can't really understand why they don't want him to stay, even if it would mean that he'd get higher wages. You'd think he's worth it.

A lot of people would argue that some of his best work for United came in those later years.

It bothers me that people seem to think playing in central midfield is all about athleticism and running around like a lunatic. Not when the likes of Pirlo and Xavi have so often put on a masterclass while barely breaking into a jog.

Both have runners around them though. I think we chose herrera over kroos as it was a case of either not both. Have no idea if it will turn out to to be a good move though, have barely seen him play.

Kroos is one of a handful of players that I actually like outside United, but I can see why LVG didn't want him. I think we are looking to build a more dynamic team, in which Toni has no place, imo. The only position he could play in LVGs system is the most advanced midfielder(like he does for Germany) and we already have at least 2 player that play on that position at a very high level.

Exactly right there, this is possibly only reason why LVG has abandoned the pursuit for his signing. Since united has got attacking play makers already with the likes of Mata and Kagawa. LVG is looking for energy in the midfield which united has been lacking so much down the years. Kroos does remind so much of young Paul Scholes and id love to see him at united but LVG i trust, this guy knows what he is doing.

When we see this kind of player playing like this in a WC semi final, I just want to ask LVG why why why ??????

Give him the 12M£ he wants, give Bayern the 30M needed and that will be enough...

The guy is just the perfect midfielder, he can play deeper or higher and still be the best around

Usually LVG plays with 3 man in midfield

Imagine a midfield

----------------------Kroos----------------------
------------Herrera-------------Vidal-------------
Mata------------------RVP------------------Wazza

Remember in one his past stints at Barca LVG went straight in and shifted Riquelme out immediately telling him infamously ‘You aren’t my player, I don’t need you here – find yourself a team to go to on loan’.

Its bothers me that people think ball players just happen to not run. Xavi and Pirlo cover a lot of miles.

Yeah, I haven't seen Herrera near enough times to make a comparison between the two.

What I can says is that if he's a better central midfielder than Kroos we've got ourselves a hell of a footballer!

This.

Agree 100% with you on that. Thats the only thing stopping me from being completely disappointed over us missing out.

Would people have preferred a Gundogan or Kroos out of curiosity ? Ignoring Gundogan's injury ofcourse.

Don't get them started they'll have you believe Toni Kroos was always their preferred player.

Gundogan for me because he is more mobile but Kroos has a greater shot and better left foot.

I don't like bringing up stats, but especially as some claim he hardly moves. He's covered more ground than per minute than Mascherano and Matuidi but no, he's lazy and immobile.

He covers a lot of ground, just because he doesn't charge around the pitch like Ramires/Fernandinho but that doesn't mean he's lazy or any of these comments banded about.

We'd have no pace out wide in that team and all just to accommodate Kroos. Would be pointless.

Nigel De Jong is not half the player Toni Kroos is but someone like him partnered with Herrera (with Mata playing as the most advanced of a three) would be far more balanced. We need someone defensively capable alongside Herrera and Kroos, brilliant as he is, is not that man.

Its funny, while I really wanted Kroos under Moyes, I worried that he wouldn't know what to do with him and would try playing him a midfield 2.

Now we have LVG, who I dont doubt would fit Kroos into a perfect system to get the best from him, and he doesn't want him.

Indeed. The idea that Van Gaal couldn't find way to effectively use such a talented footballer would worry me almost as much as the idea that he doesn't rate him.

Pirlo covered 2nd most ground in the Italian team IIRC too. But at walking pace which is different hence won't take them stats for absolute worth.

Kroos has some lazy games which frustrates fans, but won't classify as absolutely Lazy all the time either.

Being mobile and being able to jog are too different things. His definatley not lazy. But i don't think he's very mobile.

I trust LvG. His record speaks for itself so he has indeed passed up the opportunity to sign Kroos, he will have his reasons. We've got Herrera, who is a fantastic talent, so maybe LvG feels he can get more out of Herrera than he would Kroos.

Ignoring his injury record I would take him over anyone bar Vidal. It's easier to fit him in the team than Kross.

I agree on this. Gundogan before injury i thought was perfect for us and i think that's the sort of reason why LVG has gone for Herrera who we see as a more all round Gundogan type player and not Kroos who is class in his own way. (Now what is to be seen is if Herrera can reach that class or close to it in the PL surrounded by better players. I actually think he can.)

You can find parralels in Ancelotti wanting to keep Di Maria and sell Ozil in a different position last summer.

Well put. Kross is class, but with our current midfielders it would be hard to utilitize him properly.

Indeed I doubt it. Just like players who were linked to us under Fergie. He probably was interested but got a very early indication that said player does not want the move to Utd. Its probably the same with Kroos.

I can see the theories poping up about Rooney wanting Kroos to join us to emulate Scholes. Now there's no way the Vidal thread will overtake this one.

Vidal, Kroos and Herrera and I think we can put our midfield woes to bed?
