Nobody apart from few people say he is the second coming. If by second coming you mean that he'll be an essential part of our team then count me in that "consensus".

But how do I underrate him then? Have I ever said he's not a good young player or isn't a potentially very good midfielder? I've also said he should be our first choice in midfield alongside Carrick. All I've said is that people who claim he's going to be the new Scholes or whatever are going overboard, and you just agreed with me on that...

Fair enough. I guess I haven't been paying enough attention. Although I have to say the ones regarding his style of play or who he reminds them of don't deserve to be there. Saying he's like Xavi or reminds someone of Iniesta or Scholes isn't the same as saying he's as talented or them or going to become as good as them.

From what I have seen of the Welbeck threads, the comparisons to Henry are in the same vein, i.e. similar style of play and playing on the wings.

Clevelry represents (hopefully) a change in attitude and the next generation of English player. That can only be a good thing. England can't be happy producing technically inferior players and preach that's the way to go, when they get their arse handed to them on a plate in major competitions...

Obviously it won't always be 100% perfect, but 9/10 he will do a job and there's the potential there to improve. So why shouldn't people be happy that, there's someone there who can pass a ball? A relatively simple thing - but some players under certain circumstances, can't.

Let's remember, he's an England internation off the back of very few games for United. He will play will some not so good player with England. They don't have our wing play. He will come good, but the progress will come from playing games with United.

Disappointed to see him on the bench. If he's going to be our first choice midfielder in the future, he needs to start games like this.

How he must feel...play for England, do really well...benched in favor of Giggs for his club in one of the biggest games of the season.

Great way to build the young mans confidence.

Only SAF knows why we have our two young midfielders avg age 23.5 on the bench while a pair of nearly 40 year olds play 3 games in 2 weeks. Just baffling...

He's being managed, no harm in that. Might have been carrying a slight knock and wasn't worth risking. Might be trying to form other partnerships. He'll get plenty if games over the next 8 months.

Not starting 3 on the trot is quite odd but suppose Fergie might be wanting to ease him in after the olympics and now he's involved for England. Still really think we need to give him as much time as possible in the middle as he has plenty to learn and really not a whole lot of experience.

I expect him to start on wednesday with fletch in midfield IMO.

Maybe, would expect Powel to start, could be a midfield 3 I guess.

Maybe it's Fergie's way to keep his feet on the ground. No problem with that.

Having said that, and maybe it deserves a different thread, Sir Alex seems to REALLY value experience these days. Thus you know one of Giggs and Scholes, if not both, will be starting in the big games.

Maybe it's cuz he has played non stop all summer, plus England qualifiers, and that SAF thought he needs a bit of a break.

Must do too much actual midfielding for Fergie's liking.

He's been put into the Not Allowed cage with Anderson until he learns to be more imobile and/or old.

Clash with Liverpool was clearly a game of many hard challenges that could easily lead to many more injuries.

Fergie is sometimes very protective if not overprotective in terms of players, especially younger ones and returning from injuries.

This time, I think he had a point, or should I say three, in saving Clev for further games.

If Scholes isn't playing a fit Cleverley and a fit Anderson should be starting before Giggs IMO

You'd think the only reason for not buying a midfielder in the summer had to be Fergies's confidence in Anderson/Cleverley. Yet here we are, a few games into the season, and he prefers the OAP's. Will he still refuse to buy, and continue to play Giggs and Scholes, when they're in their forties?

Ridiculous decision, especially given that we lost all three games. Oh wait...

So we are not allowed to expect our team to actually play football? There wasn't much to se from that today and neither against galatasaray

I think both he and Anderson will slowly but surely see a lot more game time as the season progresses.

For today he wanted some experience in there, which is understandable.

Yep and what was the results of these games?

Taken out of the firing line after getting criticised in the English Press after the Ukraine game? Dropped because of his error against Southampton? Being rested and brought along slowly after his injury riddled season last year? Who knows, I trust SAF though, despite how baffling it seemed. I was certain Cleverley was being rested for today, deep down I knew SAF would pull something out of the hat with his team selection.

I've never been able to understand a smartass comment like this on a forum meant for discussion and debate.

It wasn't aimed at you, though, it was more aimed towards those saying "this is ridiculous, we'll ruin him". Sure, because we don't have to take into consideration WHO is managing him.

It's a forum of discussion and debate, but some people take it to a whole different level.

I don't know, Cleverley was good against Fulham and he always keeps things ticking over. Less creative than Giggs but better for the tempo of our play. Anderson's omission is baffling too. The thing is though they both offer much fresher legs than Giggs. Cleverley should have at least started one of the last three games, even if it's just to help rest Scholes.

I think it's more that he's tended to disappear for United when played this season. When he gets into form, Fergie will play him.

Why he doesn't play Anderson I have no idea.

I don't understand why Anderson isn't getting games, I think his energy and drive will make a huge difference to the entire team.

Frustrating seeing as Liverpools best players were their younger players out there today. It's possible he had a slight knock or Fergie didn't want to risk him in a game of expected heavy tackles! God knows. Definitely seemed like the wrong decison considering how weak Giggs often tends to be in his old age when he comes up against teams with decent midfields.

Anderson had another injury and I'm guessing is still not fully fit.

It's not like he hasn't played in big games previously.

Yeah he had an excellent First 45 against Fulham before fading in the Second Half and we haven't seen him since. At the time I thought he faded as he wasn't match fit yet but not playing him since won't help that, he might have had a knock but I'm not sure. Probably nailed on to start on Wednesday, hopefully he can take the chance. Been waiting for him to kick on for the last 2-3 seasons.

I agree. We're missing someone with that kind of energy in midfield.

But as Randall said, he picked up an injury recently so might not have been 100%.

Looking forward to seeing him play on Wednesday.

I think we all have, but as with Rafael, he seriously needs a run of games in order to do that. Same goes for Tom.

Yeah, young players need games and experience. The difference is Rafael and Cleverley haven't got the stigma of a big money move behind them. I am still sure Anderson can be a really good midfielder for us but the trend seems to be as thus:

Start the season off well/Play well for 3-4 games.
Start to play shit or not very good.
Get injured for a few months.
Come back fat and piss off the Caf.
Play well for a few games etc.

Hopefully he can elongate the good games and cut out the injuries/weight issues.

I agree with this. can't say I've ever really liked Giggs starting games as a CM over them. I've never been overly confident of giggs in a CM. Sure play him as an attacking mid role, but we had kagawa playing that role last night.

Hopefully both anderson and cleverley start to get games again soon.

He may not satisfy SAF in training/matches or he's still not ready to be thrown out there for the important matches.I'm just trying to figure out why would Giggs start ahead of him
