Titanic tourist submersible missing | Sub's debris found - crew "have been lost"

Is it wrong that my reaction to this is similar to when people go on ‘’hunting’ trips and get killed by an elephant or similar?
I think there are absolutely no parallels. This is about some extremely rich but rather stupid millionaires who wanted to go see the Titanic - a matter of interest to many over the years. They weren't really harming anyone apart from themselves but agreeing to sit in those ridiculous machines. Trophy hunters though, are the absolute scum of the Earth.

Even if they find the thing, how do they get it back to the surface?

This is an absolute nightmare. Imagine being stuck in that thing knowing you're just fecked.

Indeed. I think a lot of the reaction is down to seeing the submersible and asking ourselves if we'd have paid 250k to get on it and go see a shipwreck with all the things that could potentially go wrong.

I wouldn't have gone in that thing if you paid me £250K.

To see though a tiny window, some old wreck? I can think of 250,000 better ways to spend £250,000.

I kinda understand your reaction.
I too find the passengers extremely stupid and naive, but I do pray for them and hope they get rescued.
Something I've always wanted to ask: When people say this, do they genuinely pray for the people they're talking about?
Best,
Someone who doesn't pray

They’re very safe overall. Not as safe as commercial flights though, which is actually one of the safest places you can be at any time.

Well yes and no. ‘At any time’, no. Sorry for pedantry.

They’re right at the top of the list of unsafe places to be, when considered against all places.

Pedantic comment aside.. yes, they’re safer than most forms of transport.

Out of all the people who are going to die this week, these aren't the ones I feel most sorry for. But I don't really get the comparison to big game hunters, since these guys weren't actively harming anyone else or the environment (as far as I'm aware). I'd say Everest climbers are more like the big game hunters. These guys just wanted to go really deep, and it didn't work out.

So it's fine to laugh and mock them then is it? While they are likely dead or in the process of dieing. Is that really ok with you?
People are dying right now, all over, probably less than a mile from you. I just have a limited amount of compassion, which I save for people I know or those most disadvantaged.

I don't feel much for the most wealthy, choosing to do something dumb, then falling foul.

Not having much compassion is not the same as being ok with people mocking or laughing about it.

There’s an interview with the guy who owns the sub earlier. He said he wasn’t actually making much money on the deal because he spends a million dollars on fuel. So that’s a chunky carbon footprint right there. But yeah, the big game hunter comparison is stupid. They’re not doing anything cruel.

I mean they could have or could be dying a horrific death, you have to have some compassion in that regard at the very least.

Their decision to do something that stupid though makes it harder to care. A literal example of more money than sense.

It would be like someone trying to ride a lion for a laugh and getting fecking ripped to pieces, it would be hard to really care that much.

I guess it depends how safe they were lead to believe this thing was, but it seems like they were fully aware it was a pile of junk. May as well have just gone down in a car instead.

Only thing cruel they're doing is to themselves by agreeing to go 3 miles deep into the ocean in a ridiculous contraption manufactured at Walmart.

Considering they signed a waiver that freed the company from responsibility in case of their death they had to have considered that death was a possibility. And then they went and paid that company an amount of money that would be life-changing for the vast majority of the world's population to end up in this situation.

[Mod Edit comment]

in all seriousness I keep hearing why is it so difficult to find them when they are tethered

well if comms or power is down, then it’s not like there’s an abundance of capable subs readily available to head down for the rescue…..this is extreme levels of descent, very specialised submarines we are talking about capable of the extreme pressure per square centimetre

it’s as dangerous if not more dangerous than heading out too space!…everyone is aware that is taking part. And if it’s tangled on the wreckage then they can’t just be pulled up either.

I would say most likely they are doomed, unless they can stumble across a miracle and get a capable sub for those depths too head down and aid the stuck sub in freeing it, highly unlikely

also if there was damage too the sub some how, then there would be nothing too recover, let’s say the Sub is the size of an average living room, any fault in the structure would instantly squish it too the size of a baby pram, no suffering, just crushed in a blip

That's... Crass...

In some 3rd world country you lot are by their standards more than wealthy your basic citizen benefits can worth a couple months of their salary. Doesnt make it less of a tragedy and joke worthy if you died while taking a skiing trip or a hot air balloon trip they deemed a luxury
