Titanic tourist submersible missing | Sub's debris found - crew "have been lost"

The “landing frame” and a “rear cover” allegedly included in the “debris field” found in the search for the Titan sub could have been from a previous Titan dive, a spokesperson for the Explorers Club has said.

It comes after rescue expert David Mearns said he was part of a WhatsApp group involving The Explorers Club that said the debris found in the Titan search area was a “landing frame” and a “rear cover” of the missing vessel. These claims have not been confirmed.

Trevor Hale, a spokesperson for the Explorers Club told The Independent that the message that the club’s president, Richard Garriot, sent to others in a group was misrepresented

Erm, what's happening?!

RIP

I kind of expected them to never be found so I'm glad that their families got closure so quickly. It seems like it was the quickest and least painful out of the possible deaths too so I guess that's something. I hope that OceanGate gets sued to oblivion.

Oceangate have released a statement saying that they believe the passengers of the Titan submersible have “sadly been lost,” CNN and BBC are reporting.

The US Coast Guard is scheduled to hold a briefing in about 15 minutes, where officials will “discuss findings from the Horizon Arctic’s ROV on the sea floor near the Titanic”, according to a statement.

We now believe that our CEO Stockton Rush, Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman Dawood, Hamish Harding, and Paul-Henri Nargeolet, have sadly been lost.

These men were true explorers who shared a distinct spirit of adventure, and a deep passion for exploring and protecting the world’s oceans. Our hearts are with these five souls and every member of their families during this tragic time. We grieve the loss of life and joy they brought to everyone they knew.

This is an extremely sad time for our dedicated employees who are exhausted and grieving deeply over this loss. The entire OceanGate family is deeply grateful for the countless men and women from multiple organizations of the international community who expedited wide-ranging resources and have worked so very hard on this mission.

We appreciate their commitment to finding these five explorers, and their days and nights of tireless work in support of our crew and their families.

This is a very sad time for the entire explorer community, and for each of the family members of those lost at sea.

We respectfully ask that the privacy of these families be respected during this most painful time.

Guess they'll only focus on recovery now.

In the aftermath of this, will there be any questions around the legality of what has happened here? How is it legal to sell these expeditions in a vessel that has not been tested and certified by some kind of governing body? Could you, for example, legally sell flights in an experimental aircraft if you could find the customers?

This effort isn't entirely altruistic. They'll probably get to test military equipment and capabilities on this rescue mission.

You don't get the same benefit trying to find some kid who got lost in a Walmart in Kansas
I guess that depends on what "benefit" they're looking to get. If it's not translating into any monetary reward or recognition then it's a waste of their time.

The company is surely finished. They’ll be sued to oblivion

also horrible question but would there be any remains to be found at that depth with the pressure etc?

Nop.. consolation was that the death was instantaneous. (waiting to hear from USCG, so far only this idiotic company's statement is there)

Edit: I am no expert but this is what one guy said:

Sadly, the environment down there with the implosion, would render any remains almost none existent, these are extreme pressures with an implosion/crush so instant the bodies would most likely be unobtainable as they pretty much don’t exist anymore

As far as ways to die goes, it’s certainly not grim, it’s as instant as instant can be

I thought they had to sign waivers before they went down to avoid this sort of thing.

Can't think an insurance company would go near something like this.

With the pressure at those depths it's very unlikely.

I read they had to sign waivers to say they realise death is possible (not sure how true that is)

I really do understand the calls to temper the piss taking. I’m a fairly good human and would love to be able to live in a world where everyone does peacefully in their sleep at 90+.

But honestly… the pendulum of safeguarding strangers feelings has swung waaay too far back in the other direction. These are Darwin Award winners. If you had to choose the next people to die, Billionaires that voluntarily pay money and sign waivers in order to get in a tiny lump of metal to see the wreckage of a disaster that killed thousands… they’re right up there.

Walking embodiments of ‘feck around and find out’. Yes it’s tragic. My heart goes out to the families. I’m sad that they’re going through this. But also… they won’t change. They won’t donate vast amounts of wealth to coast guard organisations to eradicate the deaths of migrants.

Everything in its place.

There won't be any human remains to recover, only bits of the vessel. In a way, the safety issues are moot now - it's not like a plane crash where the safety of every other plane of the same type is called into question. This thing was a one-off.

If Chelsea referred to me as an explorer I'd pop round to a few games from time to time.

as a chelsea fan, you’re unfortunately in the timeline where you’re still in the sub as it rests motionless at the bottom of the ocean, inhaling each other’s farts, as you slowly await inevitable fate.

So the likelihood is that they wouldn't even have registered that something was wrong before instant death?

To truly live??

Many people live life on the edge and couldn’t imagine not living in extreme moments, is that really hard too get?
Great. That's also why they really shouldn't be mourned to any degree.

As someone said above, this is simply 'feck around, find out' with a poor, yet highly possible, outcome.

agreed. it’s nothing more than a personal tragedy, just one with loads of public interest. people lose people every day. it doesn’t mean you can’t have a joke about it. i’ve objectively suffered worse loss, having to watch close loved ones in constant pain, slowly deteriorate, way, way ahead of their time, through no fault of their own. i still make jokes at their expense.

their outcome was pretty inevitable. that homemade abomination was a ticking time bomb, one that was bound to go off sooner rather than later. there was clearly enough info flying around that oceangate shouldn’t be touched with a barge pole. if you’re spending that kind of money, you’d do your due diligence and walk away. the fact that they didn’t is incredibly selfish. if you leave family behind to be hurt by your own actions, you’re a selfish prick. this is no different to a high speed car crash involving 5 cars, with all 5 drivers speeding like dickheads.
