Timothy Fosu-Mensah loan

He just hasn't progressed enough, he looked like an absolute animal in the underage set up because of his physique but that's not as impressive now playing against senior players.

We all love a player who comes through our youth ranks but to me, if he was a Crystal Palace player, who had no links to us at all, most people on here wouldn't want us linked to him during a transfer window and would be completely underwhelmed by the signing. I genuinely don't think he is anywhere good enough for us right now, even as a second choice right back.

This is interesting.
He isn't good enough to be a first team regular at CP, yet people think that he should play for MUFC?
Am I missing something, here?

He's only been slowed down by injury woes but he's shown his quality this season, especially early in his loan spell when he was getting a lot of game time. Hodgson went with experience. This is what Sane said about Fosu-Mensah on a Skysports interview when asked who was the toughest opponent he faced; "Crystal Palace's right-back Timothy Fosu-Mensah, I have played against him twice this season, and even last season, he had me really well under control and I told him how happy I was to play against him."

A few quotes from Palace fans this season:

Today v Citeh Fozzy was outstanding in doing what he was told. He didn't commit himself, covered acres and played some simple and astute passes out of defence. Clearly and rightfully, the mom for me.

The boy could be the difference between staying up and going down . True class today

Standout player for us today although the whole team defended from the front and all of the back four were superb

His early season form was amazing. Some really great tackling ability and I recall some high match ratings in some. United are furious he wasn't getting game time due to Wardys form, but then got an excuse when he picked up that injury.

Early on in the season he impressed me with the way he raced back to get challenges in and he looks pretty good going forward.

He's very young for a defender and has lots of ability.
What he lacks is experience which Ward has in spades. He might need a full season on loan to a championship side to gain the necessary experience - but he is going to be a brilliant player in time.

This is what loan spells are for after all, the experience when he took over. TFM just turned 20 recently so we can't really use this loan spell against him as there's clearly a lot of potential there.

I'm sorry my friend but if there is something that stands out about Tim, it's his technical aspect of the game. He's really good at keeping the ball flowing, he's really good dribbling, he has a really nice first control. He's a real gem.

If you limit him only to full back appearances obviously you'll limit him and he won't be able to express himself as much but if he was still at Ajax, I'm pretty sure everyone and his mom would want him here and we wouldn't have heard either of Matthjis de Ligt or Ajax would have never bought Davinson from Nacional in the first place.

That's what forums are for, debate and discussion. No worries buddy. Agree he is a techniqually sound player, but wouldn't agree it's what makes him stand out. Having watched him for a good few years now at youth level as well as this seasons loan, he can be very impressive but I just don't think he will reach that top level that we would need for a starting right back. Having said that, we currently have Valencia and Darmian playing right back with Young and Shaw at left back so the bar isn't exactly very high right now. But I'd like to see the next right back to be a big step up and not a step sideways, if that makes sense.

Also have to totally disagree with you on de Ligt. I think that kid is a superstar already, and will be the number one centre half in the world for years to come provided he doesn't pick up any injuries. Again, just my opinion based I want I have seen with my own eyes, but I haven't been as impressed with a young centre half in a very long time. Apologies on going off topic there but Matthjis de Ligt has that affect on me.

We initially tried to sign him from Valenciennes, I think? as a 16 yo. There would be a good chance we would go back for him.

Anyway, I think people are forgetting when we played the Spurs side, when they put the pressure on (cheap dig I know), at WHL, TFM was a rock. The recency of his palace stint doesn't bother me. Wasn't the best loan, but there's no reason why he couldn't make that RB at ours his own.

Is he going to be a natural replacement for Valencia, or will he end up at centre-back?

I don't think he should go out on loan again. He's dropped down the pecking order at Palace, but it's understandable that Palace are going to favour both their own experienced defender as well as their own academy product over ours. TFM gives them depth, but it's not in their best interests for him to stand in the way of Wan Bissaka. That's the down side of loans, and always will be.

I'd predict Valencia will play less football next season, opening the door for TFM to pick up minutes. His form in the first half of the season at Palace was very impressive, and the move was a good one considering the manager he linked up with. It was impossible to predict De Boer would be sacked so quickly. If De Boer hadn't have bombed, he may well have been first choice most of the time.

I'd like to see him come back and play more for us. Difficult to judge a player, especially a defender, who is playing for a team slogging away in a relegation battle, but he has looked good on plenty of occasions, including for us. Far, far too early to even consider writing him off.

So, is he good enough to be Valencia's backup next season if we don't sign anyone else?

Not sure loans are all about standing out every game, its more about helping prepare yourself mentally for playing every week, and also helps young players realise what its like if your not playing at the top and realising what he needs to be to stay at a club like United. we no young players will have good and bad games, watched him v city and he was superb, watched him another time and he was poor, from training every week with the united players to going to palace will be a drop down as well, Harry Kane for example went on a load of loans and was hardly prolific went back to spurs and has been fantastic ever since.

We don't need a backup to Tony, we need a first choice right back. Think it's more likely TFM gets games in midfield.

I’d say another PL loan beckons.

Actually just a thought that occurred to me in the martial thread about him possibly leaving. De Bruyne Salah lukaku etc were all discarded by Jose for being too green despite clearly having the talent to make it. They went away and their form and attributes picked up so noticeably at mid level clubs that it was simply undeniable they could make the jump up to the top clubs again. The big move just came too early and chances were too limited in a win at all costs environment. Our manager doesn’t seem to want to take too many chances on players in their early 20s and give them enough games to really flourish. different levels of pressure and styles of matches are the only way to get experience. It’s a vicious circle. Jose is usually looking at players in their mid 20s and up with the numbers and experience to back it up straight away. Basically as close to a sure thing as possible. Is TFM that? Not yet. He has huge potential though.

Agree with the first part. Unless he has progressed a great deal, hard to see TFM getting that game time as a CM unless it's in loan.

Another loan deal would be ideal. But it should be at a club where he gets to play regularly. No club can guarantee him playing time so the player should try to pick his next destination very carefully. A move even to the championship wouldn't be too bad.

I think a PL club will play him based on what he’s done this season I just don’t think that PL club will be us. if martial goes and TFM doesn’t make here then pretty much 100% of LVGs singings will have been flops or squad players at best in a Jose set up where we are still well off winning the PL. Such shocking waste.

Loan.

Hopefully we sign a ready made RB. Having Tony.V as back up is enough.

It's the latter. We wouldn't have bought Sanchez if his development had continued as expected. Was such a formidable, alround CB at Ajax. I was gutted when he left. Would have been amazing having a De Ligt - TFM partnership from the academy starting for us today

I'm really disappointed he's ended up a right back, and he clearly doesn't understand positioning in that position, defensively, and doesn't have the cross or type of play for the attacking side of that position. He's a CB to me still, a very physically dynamic one with a good pass, both short and long. Pretty much your typical Ajax defender really had he developed in that position

He's a good athlete and seems to have a good attitude, but he's still very raw, another loan would be for the best IMO.

After the emergence of Wan Bissaka, TFM has hardly got any games. He is not even first choice for crystal palace atm.

He needs to define his position. What is he - RB or CB or DM? For me, he should be playing CB. in any case, i think we will send him to another loan.

Even if TFM doesn't play again for CP this season I still think he's had a very successful loan, he's played more minutes than I expected him to. I think another loan to a PL club next season wouldn't do him any harm, then hopefully Valencia will be gone by the following season so he should be ready to step up :).

I disagree, he's got the attributes to be a great midfielder or defender and now is the time to encapsulate him into the MU ethos. If we loan him again there is a fear that he may move on at the first chance to team that can see his great potential. Give him 50% of games with us next season and then he will most likely take over the full mantle the season after.
