Would you appoint Thomas Tuchel as the next Manchester United manager?

Ye I’m with you on this one. They could have spoken to a few under the radar. All the links coming out for the obvious ones but it could be none of them. If I was going to pick a manager out of the blue and give a chance to it would he Inzhagi from Inter. Plays good football and he’s a winner.

Yeah he would be 3rd on a list of managers, obviously the top two have already committed to their current jobs so aren't obtainable right now

That's really disappointing. I thought he could've continued what Ten Hag started quite well. The side is there for him to compete with his default 3-4-2-1 with just a few signings. The philosophy doesn't need to reset - both employ positional play ideas. Both employ a similar structure in the build up with 3 defenders, 2 mids (no fancypants inverted fullback stuff). We could have someone above Tuchel building for the future so if he ever falls out the squad remains in place for the next guy to just step in and do a job.

May as well lock thread until the next time we are looking to appoint a manager again

Am I correct in remembering Tuchal as having explicitly said at Chelsea he wanted less control, not more? My impression of him is as someone who wants to be head coach rather than manager. Authoritarian and un compromizing, yes, but within clear limits of responsibility. Am I wrong?

I won’t say you are wrong, because I don’t have any definitive facts either way. I think a lot of what we read in the press is speculation and only speculation. But what I have read is that he demands a level of control that is not offered by a lot of clubs, and is required to be collaborative with sporting and technical directors beyond a point at which he feels comfortable. Which is why he often falls out with his employers. At least this is what has been reported, and seems to me the clearest explanation for why Ratcliffe doesn’t see him as a good fit.

Recruitment is one thing but the idea that any good manager would agree to take a job where he cannot even decide the style of play is ludicrous to me. If it's true that we plan for Wilcox to decide our style of play going forward, I'm very concerned for our future
It's not about hiring a manager and then telling them how to play. We should be deciding the general style that we want to play and then hiring managers that suit that. It's absolutely how we should be doing it and stops the ridiculous back and forwards where we kept hiring managers that were completely different from each other and required completely different types of players.

There are some managers (Tuchel for instance) who seem to be able to play a wide variety of tactics, so they could still be an option.

Yeah we should be looking at managers who fit what they want to implement, however when you look at the shortlist they are all different styles. I thought Tuchel had the adaptability to fit but clearly INEOS weren't convinced at all

Could be a 'final interview' type situation. No doubt the consensus on who the next manager will be, will be made by the group.

The process at least seems a lot more thorough than we are used to, even if it the leaks are still there.

Yeah, but seems like from that interview he got the inkling that they weren't very serious about appointing him. Strange.

Though, we can never know exactly what is the honest truth. A lot of fluff gets added by the time it travels from the main source to us, the end consumer.

Phew, that was lucky, dodged a bullet there… Tuchel had far too much personality and success for the Utd job.

What we need is a proper ’yes’ man, zero charisma with feck all managerial success.

The manager of our dreams is out there somewhere

Yup. Southgate it is.
