Is this being reported by anyone or anywhere concrete and reliable?

According to Sport Witness the story started in Belgian newspaper
Het Laatse Nieuws where sources close to the player said that talks had been held with United and that they had gone well. Van Gaal has given the go ahead as he worked with him in Ajax, and the clubs will start negotiations next weekend I think it was.

He didnt.

I was one of the few who thought we didn't need a top centre back brought in that would necessarily be guaranteed first choice. We just needed a good solid centre back who could replace the numbers we've lost.

Vermaelen isn't that. He wasn't a good defender when he was rated highly and now everyone including Wenger has figured he's not a very good player. There must be so many better centre backs across Europe we could snap up for a decent price if that's what we're looking for.

Be serious, he is still a good CB it's just that Koscielny Mertesacker is a better pair. He also lost his confidence.

He's extremely rash, and much too eager to step out of defence and close people down. Before Vermaelen was supplanted by Mertesacker, Koscielny performed the task of covering for his (many) mistakes admirably, but Evans will surely have his work cut out. On the face of it, a pretty poor signing.

LVG is going to be making a lot of signings like this folks. It's not really in his nature to go after the biggest names, he has a system and he'll stick to the system and buy players (who probably won't be the obvious names) that fit that system best.

In this case you can see why he'd be interested in an experienced left footed ball playing centre back (at type of player thats absolutely essential to his system and style of play), who has the versatility to play LCB/LB in a flat back four, as well as LCB in a 3 man defence, with whom he's already familiar from his Ajax days. At under £10m it's not as if there's a massive risk involved.

Gotta trust LVG on such matters. He knows what he's doing and he knows what he needs to implement his syetem and style.

Bad buy. He's a defender who struggles to get into Arsenal's paper defence, there's no way he's good enough for United.

Ezequiel Garay looked decent last night. I think he would be a good option and he would be relatively cheap. I heard £15 million being quoted.

Sorry but LVG hasn't done anything for United to be afforded our blind trust yet.

Couldn´t we just buy the Dutch squad instead?? LVG seems to be getting them to play OK..

This is happening and I'm sceptical to say the least. He's always come across as a big game wimp to me.

Garay doesn't have great quality, but he's solid, and certainly less error prone than Vermaelen. He's also a year younger, and doesn't share Vermaelen's extensive injury record.

He suits what van Gaal likes from centre backs. Good on the ball and comfortable in wider areas. I wouldn't say I'm excited about it but I'm not suicidal over it either. He'll do alright.

As far as I'm concerned, if am manager like Louis Van Gaal thinks a player is good enough for United and fits his system, then I'm happy with the signing.

Hate to break it to you, but when a new manager comes in, that's kind of exactly what you have to do. It's pointless slating a new guy from the off, he has to be given a chance.

I don't recall Moyes being afforded the same from some sections of our fanbase. Shame, almost scouse-like with the way they treated Woy.

That's the only positive I see in this, also as a LEFT footed CB is that not an indicator of the same 352 we saw against Spain?

For example including rumoured signings:

---------------De Gea
----Smalling----Jones-----Vemaelen
Rafael---------------------------Shaw
----------Swine------Strootman
----------------Mata
---------Rooney-------RVP

Could be likely but I can't see room for Januzaj.

i would think that is the thinking alright. Id say we will only sign one MF this summer and carrick/cleverly/fellani will fill in for the other. A LB will be signed as well.

Not on here he doesn't. We should have bought in 5 marquee signings by now...THERE ARE feckING AMATEURS IN CHARGE :wenger:

Actually he did, we even made a banner out of it. It's when he started acting like Hodgson he got treated as such.

I'm not keen on signing Vermaelan in fairness but thats my 2 pence on that.

Unlike his predecessor, his CV suggests he is a more than capable manager. What he's doing at the moment with a pretty under whelming Dutch squad, further weakened by the absence of his midfield general is reason alone to be confident in the man's abilities.

Your argument is an insidious one and could be used to doubt any possible managerial recruitment.

Just because "some sections" were like that, it doesn't mean everyone was. I think most people were of the opinion that he wasn't the right man for the job but SAF had selected him so we needed to support him, it was only when it because patently obvious he was in way over his head that he started to lose larger sections. Louis van Gaal has achieved a lot more in football than David Moyes had as well, I'll certainly trust him - at this moment in time, we have to.

I am a big believer that all players, but central defenders in particular, need to be playing week in week and together in a consistent pair (or three) out to perform properly - look at how good Koscielny and Mertersacker were last season, and neither of those are world beaters, same with Terry and Cahill, etc. To futher demonstrate this, look how poorly our defence was, where we never had a settled partnership - versus how solid we were when Rio and Vidic played every week., same with Vermaelen who struggled when he came in occasionally versus how good he was when he was playing every week.

Basically, I just hope that LVG decides what his favoured defensive pairing (or threesome) is and sticks with it!

In fact, with no Eurpoean football, we should be able to play the same defence every game, even in the cups.
