Thomas Vermaelen

I was happy for Vidic and Ferdinand to leave, but it would've left a bad taste if it were to one of our rivals.

I wouldn't say they don't care, more they aren't overly concerned. It does leave them light at the back, and it is their nth captain to leave.

In football terms, it's not a huge deal and if he starts for you, that would be indicative of your decline.

It's annoying though for us because he's decent cover and would be difficult to replace for a similar price.

Is this actually a done deal then ?
If so I am disappoint, unless of course he's a squad signing and perhaps just perhaps he might be ok under a manager that can set up a strong defence.

Well, they should. Henry, Fabregas, RVP, and now Vermalen. Not to mention Fabregas' transfer to their biggest rival ( or one of them). Strange pattern there, and it's amazing when joking with your Arsenal supporting friends :D

City will need a midfielder once Yaya goes. I bet Wilshere is next :D
Oh I know arse have issues in keeping their best players. (You forgot Nasri, CLichy and Song) Its just that Vermaelen isnt one of their top defenders at all.

His agent isn't going to confirm talks with another club because then they'd be accused of tapping up.

But City doesn't purchase their captains they target their french speakers, We will sign Wilshere and Ramsey, if they become captains.

You make him sound amazing when he in reality, he's injury prone and just about above average.
Well you know, Vlaar that not even above average was a central defender in LVG team that managed to shut down Spain team. So was De Guzman. So clearly even players like that can be a part of a great team.

I'd be disappointed if we sign him even though he is the criteria of a centre back we should be targeting. Experienced, ball-player and at an ideal age that, not sufficiently, but fills a void left by Vidic and Rio's departures and it shouldn't be a signing that disrupts Jones, Smalling or Evans' development. However, he's just too unreliable and we can't take gambles on those type of players. We need an injection of immediate quality into the first team and as it stands, I wouldn't take him over Evans or Smalling as a starting centre back for us.

Hope this rumour dies out.

It is possible to have permission to speak to the player before making an official bid.
Although reading through his agent's words, it's hardly a concrete denial.

"No deal in placed with United or any other club."

Surprised that this signing is being met with so much derision, to be honest.

Based on everything we've read and heard about LvG since we got him, Vermaelen looks to be his sort of player. Very comfortable on the ball, tactically adaptable and a good character / leader.

£10m and £100,000 a week isn't that major in this day and age, and if LvG wants him, then he's a manager whose judgement we should trust.

lol true :D

Doesn't matter, good banter is still a good banter :D

Pros:
Another Arsenal captain.
van Gaal is familiar with the player.
Premier League proven.
Not overly expensive.

Cons:
Is he any improvement on our current centre-back options?
Just as injury prone as our current centre-back options.

Pros outweigh the cons. :wenger:

There's no doubt he fits the profile but most of us simply don't think he's good enough, and then it doesn't matter one bit that you're left-footed, adaptable and comfortable on the ball.

We lost 2 defenders and the rest is injury prone. If we'd sign him AND Garay nobody would probably complain
And what are we gonna do with 5 CBs in the squad exactly?

We only need two CBs if we gonna play 3-5-2.

I think given his injury record, his last year of contract, age, his will to leave and apparent lack of other suitors 10 mil is a very bad deal. Berbatov was shipped to Fulham for 4-5 mil, that an adequate price for a player in that situation really. Maybe closer to a 6-7 region in this exact case.

Obviously if LVG wants him bad, we should pay 10 mil. But once again i think we will be overpaying.

The telegraph reporting that he's basically agreed personal terms with us. Getting himself a nice wage increase from £70k a week to £100k, not bad work for a player that has lost his place to Koscielny and Mertesacker over the last season at Arsenal.

I'm not saying that Vermaelen or Mata are bad players but it's going to be a long road back if the best we can attract are backup players from our rivals who are currently ahead of us.

That bolded bit might just be part of the plan.

Yeah, was just about to post that maybe LvG thinks our youngsters are good enough and that he can be the man to take them up a notch. Maybe he doesn't think he needs a great center back and someone cheapish like Vermaelen who will add a bit of experience to the team is enough for him.

Exactly. I am open to Vermaelen transfer cause he can fill in LB and has some experience at top level. But then i would rather keep they guy as a cover and give two of our current CBs a fair chance to establish themselves as a starters. And if we do get Vermaelen i would actually advocate us dropping Shaw interest for now, if 27 does not go through, cause spending 30 mil for him and giving 19 years old a Mata's salary is hysterical really. And try to channel this money to buy the like of Vidal. Surely he is not for sale etc, but a 40-45 mil offer and a 200k salary could say otherwise really.

I'd love this. I was actually happy for us to go into the new season with Jones-Evans as first choice, but I really rate Vermaelen. He's not been as good for Arsenal recently as he was in his first couple of seasons, but for me that has more to do with losing his regular starting spot and having to play a lot of football somewhat out of position at LB. And the injuries, obviously.

I am a big believer that all players, but central defenders in particular, need to be playing week in week and together in a consistent pair (or three) out to perform properly - look at how good Koscielny and Mertersacker were last season.

That is exactly the case, I'm no professional footballer but I'm a CB for a sunday league team and had played beside the same guy all preseason and 5 games in the season, we conceded 2 goals in those 10 matches, he got injured and I was paired with 5 different CBs on different occasions and the result was dreadful, we conceded at least 1-3 goals a game afterward. A CB partnership is a must!

The main reason of his signing is the price.

He's a good passer and that is a fundamental skill for a LVG player

Typical Neviller. Read the post i responded to. It's about additions.
I know it is. If you play 3 regularly you need people to cover for them.

We won't play 3 regualrly though.

And typical Neviller? You've only been here 5 minutes. Typical newbie, thinks he knows it all.

It would an underwhelming signing. He's a good player but his injury record isn't great and IMO we need a leader at back, someone who's good at sorting the defenders out and I don't think Vermaelen is that player.

I remember Vermaelen's first couple of seasons at Arsenal being pretty good. The big doubt for me that we have enough injury prone defenders. Who knows though. If he stays fit then he could be a decent signing.

He is not a player I would choose to go for but I will support him all the way if he comes.

As i've said you showed true wum colors in Ed's thread, so it's justified.

In order to play 3-5-2 regularly five CBs in the squad is enough.
