He played LW (when Alba played LB), LB and CB for them. He's a pretty good all-around footballer who probably makes the most sense as an LCB in a 3 man backline. I think he'll be Alba's backup and challenge for the LCB spot at Barcelona, perhaps with Vermaelen. Long season, Barca should get close to 60 games (Copa Del Rey being 2 legged) so he should get a fair amount of minutes on the left-side of defence.
We can't possibly start the season without adding another defender, we're short on numbers and quality.

Before, I would have said yes for Vermaelen without hesitation. But now, I'm not so sure after the low number of appearances he had last season and everything that was said about him.
If anything, I don't want Vermaelen to be used as a Plan B just because we refuse to make that offer Dortmund just can't refuse for Hummels. There's quite a gap in class between Hummels (or insert the name of any high quality center-back) and Vermaelen.

I'm constantly baffled by the fact that @peterstorey is allowed to keep posting on a forum that generally has higher standards than other football forums.
What does he add to the discussion? He is constantly on a WUM and not even the funny type but the childish shit type that you would expect from a 14 year old. And I think that he is much older than that which is a bit sad.
If a newbie is promoted right now and posts the kind of meaningless drivel that @peterstorey seems to exclusively post, he will be banned in a day or two, and rightly so.

The Man United website has heights wrong regularly. Carrick is supposed to be 6 feet, but he towered over Ronaldo and some others who are listed as 6 feet or 6'1.
EDIT: I see that over the years most websites who used to list him at 183 have finally adjusted his height to 6.2 -> 188 cm.

Michael Keane is listed as 172cm/5' 7.7" on the United website, when in reality he's about 188cm/6 ft 2 in. They are utter bullshit in that aspect.
