T. Muller states in the German "Bild" that after the WC 2010 he got an offer from Chelsea, as well as from United.

"I got offered a lot [of money]. I turned down a lot of offers after the WC, there was one from Chelsea as well as from United."

"You feel somehow honored, something like this doesnt happen every day. But I thought to myself, that it is not logical to do this step at such a young age."

"A transfer would have been stupid within my first year as a professional. At my age, you have to play."

"I dont see a reason why this should change. I love to be here. One can almost say "I live Bayern Munich."

I wonder what role Fergie had in mind for him?

Assuming he actually had any interest in Sanchez then you'd presume it was with the same kind of thinking - exceptional talent that can't be ignored, with the quality to play right across the front line so allows for plenty of options. I personally think if that there was genuine interest in either of these two then we wouldn't have went in for Ashley Young and that would've been their primary role. Would've loved Müller here, as I imagine any fan in the world would. One of those young players you can already count on to provide a great level of service for years to come.

I would go along with that. Young was the backup for them in my eyes, though not a bad backup by any means.

Still, there was one Bayern player I would want more than Muller, I wonder did we bid for him too.

Is it just me or is it very hard to get German players to leave Germany for England?

Theres been very few decent players I can think of that have done it.

Would have loved Muller. His WC performance with Ozil was spectacular.

They're loyal to their country and generally the best ones will just go to Bayern and stay there for the majority of their career.

Ozil was a bit of an exception.

Why is this believable, yet every player who signs for City and says "I turned down United for City" is instantly called a liar?

I personally think he's talking bollocks anyway.

Well the German league is just as competitive as the English league, if not more so. The quality of footballing talent in the league is high, and the support of each club is second to none. What reason would there be to leave their home country? (money excluded)

Who are you talking about?

Not just City, pretty much any team. They sign for a club and say "I turned down United for so and so..." blah blah, and everyone on here calls them a liar. I'm just curious as to why - so far in this thread - it seems everybody believes what Thomas Muller is saying.

feck knows. The closest I can think of is Nasri?

But what the hell is the relevance to this thread?

Given his fixation with Arsenal, I'm sure he is talking about Nasri who was incidentally offered more than 50k than our contract according to media.

I would have said as an upgrade to Welbeck, or someone who can play across the top. Though Welbeck is making a hell of an impression this year.

Indeed, it's largely the same in each of the countries with the top 4 European leagues - Italy, England, Spain and Germany. In the 2010 WC there were only three players playing outside their home league from these four countries combined - if your leagues good enough there's no real need to move. There were only 2 in '82, then 10 in '90 (4 of which were English players in Rangers, and 3 Germans at Inter - a little like the Spanish contingent at Liverpool) and then 6 in '02 (2 Germans in England). That's around 5% of the 350-odd players from those four countries, in those four World Cups over the space of three decades, that were playing abroad. It's not England-specific, right now there's 4 German players from the national team playing abroad - 1 in England, 1 in Italy and 2 in Spain.

Good points, not too mention that living conditions in Germany are great also.

So noone at City then.

Any specific player at any other club you've got in mind?

The general consensus was btw, that it was nonsense because we have Rooney

when has that ever stopped Fergie when an exceptional kid is concerned?

Ok.

How about Didier Zokora?

Zokora shunned United and Blues | Football News | Sky Sports

Or Lucas Leiva?

Lucas: I turned down United for Liverpool | Mail Online

Or the hundreds upon hundreds of players that claim they "turned down United"? Do me a favour. I can keep going, there are plenty more.

Hundreds upon hundreds. Do me a favour.

I was curious to see if you had a specific example in mind because it's unusual to hear a player come out and say he had a concrete offer from United.

Loads of "sources" coming out saying various clubs including United were "interested in" or "following" their man (which usually means he had a scout along to a few of their games) or even the occasional player like Zokora saying something similar.

I'm not aware of many players saying what Muller just said about a specific offer in a specific transfer window. Could be wrong though. Feel free to come up with a small sample from the hundreds upon hundreds you're thinking about.

He would not be challenging Rooney for a place. He'd be playing as a wide forward like Ronaldo in 07/08.

What a player.

:(

I could be here for hours though, so if you dont mind I'll pass on that one :)

Germans seem to like to stay in Germany more than the people of nearly any other country I can think of. Maybe it's all the vacations, so they're not sick of the place.

If I could have any German national I'd take Muller, he looks like a throwback to the days of German dominance, he's a machine.

Bayern are one of the very top clubs in the world, a proper football club, very well-run, have a large fanbase, are successful and have a rich history as well. Munich is a beautiful city, he gets paid shitloads, is guaranteed to win trophies, came through their youth system and is Bavarian himself (as is his wife AFAIK) which will tie him to the club even further.

I'm not sure if I can see him ever moving if he isn't falling out with the board. Seems like a one-club-player to me even though it's still early days regarding his career. World-class footballer on his day IMHO, his football brain really sets him apart from many very good players. His movement especially off the ball is nothing short of brilliant.

Pretty sure it is the vacations, but Germany is also a very nice country with a high standard of living*.

* it's an expensive one, too.

It would be a tough choice between Muller Schweinsteiger and Ozil

I thought the canadian dollar was worth a fortune these days, with everyone getting the feck out of most of the other currencies?

We're hovering around parity with the greenback the last little while but I'm more accustomed to it being worth around 3/4 of a USD.

Ah, now that I think aboot it, I did know you guys changed to real money.

Some great german players coming through at the moment, muller looked quality at the world cup and whilst I haven't seen much of him since, looks like exactly the kind of player fergie would try to get.

Didn't realize he's a little over 6 foot 1, 186 cm!

Somehow always strikes me as one of those short silky type of players.

Whaat? Never seen him play?! He's like the stereotypical tall and skinny lankylad, which makes his great control all the more impressive. Very similar to Welbeck in that aspect actually!

Anyways, for me he would probably have been the ultimate muppet dream. He such an impressive player with almost everything in his locker. Fantastic "footballing brain" (I didn't actually read that thread) which shines through in his movement and involvement in the passing game. He's also a deceptively good dribbler, and a consistent goal threat.

Pretty sure he'll be playing at the highest level for the next decade, but unfortunately I can't see him leaving Germany and Bayern either.

He's like a forward, to me, who can actually play on the wing. What he does for Germany is probably what everyone was dreaming that Gerrard would do on the wing for England.

And it would be hard to find many people who would agree Mueller is better than Gerrard.

It would be a tough choice between Muller Schweinsteiger and Ozil

It's a matter of taste, I suppose, but Muller seems so calm and professional, with a very consistent output. The other two might produce more moments of genius or more highlights, but Muller, for me, would add just a bit more to the team overall.
