He got an off the record kind of answer from Sammer and an on the record answer from Muller when asked if United had approached him again. It's not make believe. Muller actually said that and we've actually made an offer.

Beckham is a bit different, he was London born and supported spurs. Although he did spend his childhood (or large portion) up here in Manchester.
We could offer any kind of stupid money for him but I just can't see Mueller wanting to leave Bayern for us.
My other concern with this transfer is that we waste weeks on end trying to convince a player to sign for us who simply doesn't want to.

This is exactly what I would like. Those players are all going to improve the team and we'd have them ready for pre season and ready for the CL qualifiers. Big targets tend to always drag on deep into the transfer window, get the core business out of the way first.
The perfect player for us but never going to happen, I don't know why we get involved in this type of pointlessness.

The problem ist that the big players cost a lot and take a lot of the transfer budget.

By all accounts, clubs don't often make a bid on a player nowadays unless they know he's interested. Which suggest either Muller has been leading us along, or we said we'd just bid on spec and see what happened, which does't seem that wise.
