AEW’s next big event just sold out in 15 minutes, apparently demand was so high they could have sold it out 3 times.

I’m currently listening through JR’s podcast it’s great for behind the scenes wrestling stories. They go through old ppv’s and he talks about the booking and what was going on behind the scenes at that point in time. Really enjoying it so far and I’m not a big podcast guy.

Don't be buying Meltzer's shtick, for goodness sake. The guy is probably on AEW's payroll. He called it the most in-demand wrestling event ever, for feck sake.

It's a huge success to sell out in 15 minutes but like feck it would've sold 137,600. For one, someone on Reddit posted a video of himself with 6 or 7 laptops, computers and phones on the website. Presumably they count as individual and I imagine there were loads of others doing the same thing.

I reckon they could've doubled it, perhaps trebled it but 137,600 is laughable.

Dont be ridiculous.

It was his estimation based on the legit 72,500 being logged onto their site trying to buy the tickets in the first period of time. So thats the only confirmed number. The 137600 is an estimate based on that I believe.

He absolutely is, be it paid or not. The Young Bucks' finisher is named after him! Of course he's cosy with them. He's never had a bad word to say about any of the Elite. Look at the damage control he was trying to do when PAC dropped out of Double or Nothing. Yesterday saying All Out was the most in-demand wrestling event ever, today saying "the amount of people in WWE who have contacted AEW would blow your mind."

Everyone wants out..I dont want to say everybody cause Roman Reigns doesn't want out, but....they were just in town and....yeesh. They (WWE) didnt expect this momentum (AEW) to keep growing. I'm sure that (WWE) would have thought that it was beginners luck the first time, but now they can't say that, but this has gotten stronger (AEW) with each show and the momentum is insane. Vince has a lot on his plate right now....this is not something he saw coming

Nothing cool about wrestling now like there was from the mid to late 80s or the late 90s to the early 2000s. Despite the appeal of NXT and now seemingly AEW for workrate and probably storylines too both strike me as all too niche if not wholly nerdy.

Meltzer is the biggest shill in my mind! The man is completely full of it and I love when Pritchard rips his theories apart on the Something to wrestle with podcast.

I actually can't believe people hang on his every word like its the gospel, have they not listened to him? The man is a mumbling, bumbling weirdo and speaks in tongues. Some of the quotes on NODQ legit hurt my brain trying to read them, here's an example

Yes and no.

I'll wait and see a few AEW weekly shows before judging that, but with NXT, it definitely caters towards the pure wrestling fan (or nerd as you put it). However the matches you see at takeovers definitely entertain the casual fan.

I know what you mean. I went through a period of watching NXT a couple of years back and certainly found the Takeover shows very entertaining. However, while other casual fans have doubtlessly enjoyed them also these shows have never drawn them back in large numbers and I really don't see that changing.

Yes the same kids, teenagers and twenty-somethings who loved Attitude Era WWE in 1998 were the same ones who started watching the UFC a decade later.

He is friends with them for sure. You missed out that Daniels & Kazarian's finisher is "The Best Meltzer Ever". He's also friends with many people in WWE (Including Vince McMahon during the Steroid trial days when Vince wanted some good publicity) and some in NJPW. That doesnt mean he works for AEW, WWE or NJPW. Thats tin hat stuff.

He always estimates lower than what the AEW shows end up doing because he's trying to predict based on history of what other promotions have done in those buildings and areas. He says himself that the numbers make no sense and thats why he was caught by surprise for them. He does his research on these things. But AEW seems to be pulling in a new audience with very minimal crossover with the people who bought WWE pay per views. They have more crossover with some UFC fights. But he said it still doesnt explain where the majority of the audience is coming from. The only thing he can think of is that they're wrestling fans who dont like watching WWE and are coming back to watch something new and different.

He's had plenty of incorrect theories, his match ratings some people agree with and others dont, personally I mostly do but I think he gives the WWE womens matches way too much. But he is also the most well respected wrestling historian because he's been around so long, has had some good sources and has tried to report on the scene pretty well.

I won't disagree with that. I don't really watch it anymore (not seen a Smackdown or Raw for years) but my fondest memories as a Wrestling fan was shit like Austin v McMahon rather than Flair v Steamboat (not that I can't see the superior work of course).
 
I'm past the point of caring about "workrate" anymore. Says a lot when R-Truth and Billie Kay youtube clips are the highlights of WWE right now just because they're naturally funny.
 
Wrestling for the sake of wrestling isn't fun. It needs story behind it

WWE is for entertainment but most of its entertainment is offensive or embarrassing without logic

Attitude era had some stupid shit too but it was mostly entertaining with awesome characters and motives but beyond that most wanted the top prize and you could see around 7 or 8 who would be legit top guys but great talkers too. They didn't come off as robots trying to remember what was written down

The aew estimate of 136k or whatever is OTT. But will be interesting to see what their next event is after and what arena they run
 
The attitude era had plenty of shitty stuff too. But the main thing is, it was "hot shotting" ratings. Meaning they always tried to shock you and give you something to talk about even if it didn't always make the most sense or it was offensive and trashy and it would be hard to top it the next week.

Now WWE is mostly so mediocre that its not even worth speculating about things and large amounts of the shows feel like wasted time once you've watched it. Still occasionally some good stuff with certain people, but its the vast minority of their programming.
 
Not only that but when something good happens they run that into the ground and do it over and over again whether it's a match, a segment or even a joke
 
That Alexa Bliss promo last night with Bayley. Oooooft that was good, even if Bayley tried her damndest to be her usual crap self with her promo deliveries. Bliss owned her. If she could just get better at putting a match together she’d be the full package.

Raw and smack down will be live on BT Sport and the PPVs will be on BT Sport Box Office

What AEW needs to focus is creating new stars with good characters. Stay away from WWE rejects. I cannot see AEW pipping WWE any time soon. WWE is still the place to go but if they do not improve their product, we will soon see a slow death of them.
 
Stomping Grounds is lining up to be one of the worst PPVs in recent memory judging by the total lack of enthusiasm for it. Word is they're having huge trouble shifting tickets for it and they're doing 2-for-1 deals to try and fill it up a bit.
