Thiago Silva | Fluminense Player

Really knew this was going to happen. Here's what I said prior to this signing :

He was top class defender alright but at 35 years old he'll be totally exposed against pace and intensity of premier league. If they're considering him to be their main defender next summer then great business for their rivals.

I don’t see the hype and excitement with this signing. This is on par with us signing Laurent Blanc in his twilight period.

Silva has been a great player in his career. But having had his peak years in Italy and then going to the farmers league in recent years.

I honestly would not be surprised if he struggles and ends up a flop in the premier league. The league is faster and more intense than ever before. He’s got a huge challenge ahead of him.
:wenger:

I'm really surprised Lampard thought this was the guy to fix their defensive woes. This is such an Arsenal signing.

Strange making him captain. Don’t think he knows English? How’s he supposed to communicate with the ref and teammates?

A 36 years old who spent his whole career in Italy and France... Yeah, what could go wrong. And fair to say Chelsea's even worse than Pep in signing defensive players.

Rüdiger is their best or 2nd best defender and they want to ship him out and start this guy. Very hard to comprehend.

I think we will see a few more of these performances. He should have tried to go back to Milan

You're not playing against Reims and Dijon now sunshine :nono:

I see his detractors are out after 1 game

I mean even I never rated him as the best in the world before as well but still this is just one game.

People are too fast with their views. Basically waiting for any excuse for an "i told you so". That was a horrible mistake but this stuff happens even with younger players and players who have played in the PL for years

Give him some time to adapt. Also he’s not in his prime so not really expecting peak level performances.

Nope serious, not a knee jerk from his performance today. Never really seen what all the fuss is about.

He is a quality player to be honest with you, but im probably not the only one who remember him more for his outrageous FIFA-cards than performances matching said cards.

Apart from the fact that he's only one game in and it's too soon to determine if he's a flop, it didn't look like age, pace or intensity were any of the reasons for his poor showing today.

It's not a huge surprise though. Hes never been tested in a top league and subsequently never had the opportunity to show great performances outside of a handful of games. Coming to the PL was going to be a gamble even if he was in his prime.

So a player who's brought in to organise and be an experienced head fails on his first assignment,
Chelsea looked all at sea yet again at the back.
He needs to be more dominant then that if he wants to be a success in the premiership.

A mistake like that is a total surprise, it's not like he got out muscled or out paced. No one should be making it at any stage of their career and no matter where they came from

I don't get why Frank is playing him on his wrong foot though, his whole career has been on the right.

reminded me of Kobe's story about the first time he came up against Jordan, "its a lot faster in person isnt it"

He wasn't even bad outside that mistake.

I'm not saying that means he should be let off, you absolutely can't make that type of mistake when you've been brought in as a quick fix bit of experience no matter how well you play outside of it but people making out he was a Bramble/Mustafi hybrid all game well
I wasn’t watching the game closely, but you say he wasn’t that bad, in a game where you conceded three first half goals to WBA, with him as your captain (one of the goals solely on him)?

Guess I will have to watch MOTD to see the other bits where he must have played well.

He did not, he was having one of his best season with PSG before COVID and was impressive during the final 8. Definitely a good short term fix.
Nice start for the definitely good shirt term fix. He could do well for Chelsea but it could go both ways as was evident from that terrible display

I told you sos after 1 match?

Some of you have no shame
I told you sos are a bit much given its 1 match and he can still come good for them but still fun to laugh at the irony of the man brought in for calmness doing that
