Thiago Alcantara | Signed for Bayern Munich

Is there anything concrete from either side? Or we are just dancing around with the rumours?

I just hope this doesn't end up like Sneijder. :nervous:

Well apparently in 2011 we had a £15m bid for Thiago rejected so it seems he's been on our radar for a long time which would definitely fit into how we do our business.

Every player we seem to be interested in, you get people saying "this will end in tears" or "it's never going to happen". Since when did we get a lot of ITKs coming into this forum? This does seem a real possibility, and in fact out of all the clubs interested we offer the best opportunity for a CM spot:

  • City have just signed Fernandinho for £30m, with Toure as his CM partner, will spend a lot of the time on the bench.
  • Chelsea could be a possibility, but they have Lampard, Mikel, Ramires and the returning Essien in CM, and if some see him in the advanced role he has Oscar, Mata, Hazard, de Bruyne and Schurrle all going for 3 spots. A lot of rotation would go on.
  • Monaco would be a free spot, but offers no Champions league football this year and is only a "project" so far. French football isn't anywhere near Spanish or English football and I don't see him wanting to take a step down in terms of the quality of football. Money can always sway people though.
  • Bayern have a vast wealth of midfielders too, and all he would be doing is rotating with them, so there's no point going there unless he is desperate to go to work with Pep.
We just seem to be showing the most interest, and he looks really set to be leaving Barca. I may be setting myself to be bitterly disappointed, but we just make the most sense, with Scholes retiring, Fletcher almost permanently ill, Anderson struggling for match fitness and Cleverley not a great CM starter (yet), Thiago would be starting over 30 a season here in the PL.
Perhaps if we were to sign both him and Strootman (2 CMs in one summer, who would have thought it), then he would get restricted game time, but I can only see that being for a couple of seasons as Carrick wears down and can't play so much. But even then it wouldn't be that restricted, as I can see them both pushing each other for a starting CM spot much as de Gea and Lindegaard had to do for the GK position. Just wish this bloody tournament finished soon so we can find out his decision!

Generally how it works on here is that when q reported target goes elsewhere, people come out with 'is there any proof we were interested?'

The fact is, how will we be able to prove it? It will be very difficult. If we were linked by various media fir a long period of time, I would assume we were interested.

So what's actually been said about this potential transfer?

I've not been paying attention and I'm sure as hell not going to read through those last 20 pages of bickering, horny transfer muppetry at it's finest (worst), so what have the club and Thiago himself actually said about him leaving?

I get that he's supposed to have a release clause that's quite low. Is this confirmed by Barca?

Perhaps FCBarca could fill me in?

 Utter nonsense.

We don't guarentuee anyone games was the message put out, especially not a spoilt 18 year old who wasn't pulling his weight for the reserves because he felt he was too good for them. An £18m signing from Barcelona who already has nearly 70 appearances for what has been the best side in the world for the last 5 years can feel pretty comfortable he's going to get the amount of games he wants in our midfield.

Well done numpty, you missed the point completely. The only possible stumbling block would be if he asks for guarantees or even contractual clauses. We don't do either.

It's not though? There's loads of differences between him having good reason to want to come here, which he does and him looking highly likely he will.

We've got to be strong favourites. We'll never hear anything worthwhile in the British press, but Barca brief certain Spanish papers, and they all seem to thing we're favourites and that he's leaving. We couldn't be in a better position right now.

It doesn't matter if we offer the best opportunity for CM. Years and years of witnessing our transfer target ending up in other clubs told us that most players do not think like we do.

You feckers, came here and saw that have been three pages from yesterday. Excited, started to read the posts. Disappointed that not there wasn't something new from journos, but we didn't have even a tweet or google docs.

No tweets? Clearly you didn't see Tancredi's tweets...

Thiago Alcantara has informed Barcelona of his intention to leave, according to catalan sport paper Sport. At least two offers from Premier

The one I'm sure about is the Manchester United offer for Thiago Alcantara. Let's see the others

According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona would sell Thiago Alcantara to finance a bid for Mata

If true - IF - that would mean Manchester United with one move might sign Thiago and make more likely that Chelsea would lose Mata

Why does it put 3 spoiler tags?

There's every reason to want to sign him:
1) Is he better than what we have, i.e. Cleverly and Anderson? I THINK SO.
2) His release clause is reasonable.
3) He has good experience of club and international football (3 senior Spain caps).
4) I imagine his salary will not be exorbitant.
5) He's 22, so preferences for youth and re-sale value would be readily satisfied.
6) Several Spanish speakers at United and a peer in De Gea.
7) Excellent passer and vision.

Yes, a doubt may be his size but he's quite strong and he can tackle better than Scholes.

All in all, I can't see an obvious "con". I also like Marchisio but he'd be more expensive and he's older.

I say Moyes go get Thiago ASAP. And get DDG to persuade him to come.

I think it's clear we are interested. Whether we get him or not is a different issue but we can't do much more than state our interest and hope he sees the advantages of joining

We could, you know, actually bid for him as well.

His size shouldn't be any concern at all, even by ye olde Premier League standards (which, I am at pains to stress, no longer exist - Oscar, Silva etc). He's physically stronger than lots of our current players, including Cleverley, who he'd be replacing.

Everyone on here is talking about other teams like for example Bayern having too many midfielders so therefore it means there is a good probability he will end up at United, how about the possibility of him staying at Barca and giving it one more go?

I can't emphasise this point enough. He might be relatively short but he's stocky. Scholes is a bit shorter and he handled the old league with his quality of passing and positioning. I expect no less from Thiago. Teams like Stoke are easily beat with quickness of the pass and quickness of the mind.

yeah I think that's a strong alternative for him. When you spend as much time as he has Barca then you do develop attachment to the club and the temptation to stay provided he is guaranteed more playing time might be hard to resist

As far as concrete evidence goes from the player himself, he turned his back quickly, smiling, when asked about joining us. You be the judge. :)

He's been in this position before and decided to give it 'one more go', apparently with the same buyout clause too. I think he's had enough this time. Tito apparently called him but could only offer him the understudy role once again, which obviously isn't enough.

I'm not convinced that Barca want to keep him. This all began with a story that Barca had put him on the market as they needed to make money. The story of the buyout clause only came after that.

The point is that even if we don't know anything about what talks are going on behind the scenes at Barca, the facts about the team are obvious to anyone. If he wants to be a first-teamer at Barca, Thiago needs to wait for Xavi to get old enough to merit replacement. And anyone who has watched them this season knows that he is nowhere near being on his last legs. He could go on for two or three more seasons easily without even worrying about losing his place.

If Thiago was 19 still, that might be worth the wait. But he's 22. Sometimes the 'be patient and you will get your turn' just doesn't line up. Thiago needs to be a top team's first choice midfielder right now.

If we don't get this guy, how fecked is our midfield next season?

Roughly as fecked as it was last season. I reckon Moyes would trust Cleverley to be a firm starter, and Cleverley would perform much better as a result. So we might even see some improvement. But it still wouldn't be a patch on what it could be with Thiago.

Anyway, I hope this gets settled one way or the other. His big buyout clause returns in August, doesn't it? Would hate to invest all summer in attempting to sign him only to be rejected at the final furlong.

I bet we wait til the last day of the window and then sign him Redknapp style

But by then it'll cost us 30m :'(

Like every pursuit I've ever made with girls then.

Thiago will know that a decision needs to be made quickly. I wouldn't be surprised if he knew where he wanted to go already, or that it was us he wanted to play for. We might just be waiting for him to sign on the dotted line.

Not entirely sure what this laugh means - I'm not saying it was 'fecked' last season. I'm simply saying that if we don't sign anyone, it stands to reason that our midfield will be roughly the same.

I know it wasn't. It's just an obvious answer, but I wasn't expecting it.

Tancredi Palmeri says it's very possible, Thiago is keen and we made the earliest contact to Barca.

It's off. :(

But but, you're shaggy !!!!

About the transfer, do not expect anything people. Not that I'm ITK or anything like that, just that I don't see it happening.Too much of a Barca player to be tempted by United.
More than likely he'll stay with them
