Rumor around twitter says that he is in verge of signing new Barca contract!?

Graham Hunter saying things have slowed down because his father is insisting on having the same clause in his contract at United he's using to leave Barca - play him or lose him at a cut rate.

I'm not sure how the club would react to such a demand. Obviously it's a bit redundant given the weakness in midfield and Thiago's ability already means he'd be one of the firs names on the teamsheet every week. But it's a dangerous policy to start implementing, what if say for example Zaha said that unless he gets 10 appearances by January then the club will allow him to leave on loan in order to continue to progress?

A week ago Hunter said United and Thiago were close enough to have agreed a contract, now he's saying it's the contract that's slowing down the move.

Wouldn't mind that clause, so long as it's injury permitting. Imagine if he got KO'd for the season, then conveniently kicked up a stink about wanting to leave, someone comes in and triggers a £15million clause, and he's gone. Unlikely, I know, but not impossible. Surely there has to be some leeway on being fit enough to play. Because if he's fit, he's probably going to start. He's better than what we've got.

In Thiagos case I wouldn't have a problem with such a clause. Same money for a release that he'd cost us obviously. What is there to lose?

Your Zaha scenario is slightly different tbh. Loaning players to weaker clubs in this league is something we've done in the past and will do so again. I doubt you'll get players specifying that as contractual stipulations.

It's obvious that this lad wants to play and make a name for himself, whether that be here or at Barca.

Why the hell would he want the clause anyway? Who are we going to play instead? Fletcher and Anderson? Phil Jones?

I think it's obvious that most of these updates are bullshit. I've been a firm believer of Thiago coming to United, but lately I've started to wonder. Do we really want him here if he's just using us to get a better contract somewhere else? Do we want someone who'll leave his boyhood club just to earn money, then feck back to Spain when his club got room for him? He is so low on confidence that he needs in writing that he's going to get games, and that is not promising for someone who is supposedly going to be the star of our midfield for the next decade.

Do we want him in our side, and feel that he's just getting games so he cant leave on a cheap when the season is done? No, feck him I say. If he doesnt want to come to the club when he has to fight to be a starter in the best team in the world, then he doesnt deserve us. I say ThiagNO!
Hello.

Well did either of them pretend to wank for you guys?

Barcelona made their pitch to him after we did, didn't they? Maybe he's using their offer to try and get us to improve ours? We might have agreed the basic outline of a deal with him, now he's using Barcelona's bid to raise the stakes again.

Thiago will be a back up to Phil Jones. The whole squad is a back up for Phil Jones.

feck Thiago, Ronnie and the Stroot. We just need to clone Jones 22 times.

I hope when Thiago doesn't bottle this. Neymar taking his shirt number should have been the final straw.

Can people please stop saying "Twitter is saying..." before posting "news" without specifying who said it or what the source is? It's fecking pointless.

I searched #thiago on twitter. Most of the posts were about Thiago signing a contract with Barca.

It doesn't surprise me that players are asking for guarantees regarding playing time. They make so much money in salary and endorsements, that an extra 25-50,000 doesn't sway them as much as it once did. Plus with the top clubs hording all the best players, it's tough for any player to be a nailed on starter at a club that is aiming to win domestically and in Europe. With the World Cup next year, there are a lot of players who need the opportunity to play regular first team football if they are going to be selected for their national teams.

One things for sure, we're more likely to see a deal based on having to play the player a certain amount under Moyes than under Sir Alex. If anyone had said that to him the deal would have collapsed then and there

Hello.

You do have to wonder about what passes for "news" in the UK. For all the US's faults -- slavery, genocide, subjugation of all kinds and of course Paul Deen -- one thing we do very well here is report sports news that's actually news and leave the pure crap speculation aside. And when someone tries to get away with "fake but true" stories such as Dan Rather, he's tarred and feathered in eternal disgrace.

With that in mind, who the fukk knows whether Thiago is using us as leverage for a better deal with Barcelona? I don't and it's good bet that most caftards don't either. But to reply to the post above it wouldn't bother me in the least if Thiago is willing to leave his "boyhood club" for a club which will either give him regular playing time or pay him a competitive wage. I'm sorry to break the news, but very few outrageous footballers are willing to "wait their time". If it's true he wants the clause discussed above, I've got no problem with that either. There's ZERO chance we're going to pay a 20m transfer fee and pay handsome wages to a player who's got almost no chance of being better than Tom Cleverley and Ando.

While I'm on the subject of Tom Cleverley, it seems to me there's been far too little discussion of him through the Thiago saga. If the conclusion is that he's not good enough for United, should we perhaps send him packing?

Ronaldo had an agreement very like that when he arrived - a promise to let him go back to Sporting on loan if he wasn't going to get 20 games. In fact when he signed he expected to go straight back to Portugal because of that (written/unwritten?) clause.

If Thiago needs to know he can't get trapped as a squad player if he doesn't fit our eventual system then fine - if he's a squad player then we should be willing to let him go at a reasonable price.

What do you make of the news from Mundo Deportivo? Have Barca really offered a new deal?

The more I think about it, the more credit I have to give to Thiago. For us fans it's absolutely nerve-wracking. However, it seems Thiago and his camp are really trying to be careful and considered. This is a big move for Thiago. He's only 22 years old but he has a lot to his game already and he wants to succeed. We already know he does not hold as much emotional ties to Barcelona compared to most of his Barca teammates who are Catalans. Additionally, he wants more playing time and I can see why the family want those assurances. They want to know his future is secure and I don't begrudge them that. It's probably not the most efficient way to direct negotiations especially when few English clubs negotiate in such a way. However, if we take Graham's words to be true, it seems to me Thiago's camp wants more than promises. The insertion of a clause would ensure that holds true.

I don't see the clause as a major deal. I'm sure some of you think if the deal isn't concluded because of this snag then Thiago can go feck himself. I see it a bit differently. If we play him as a regular starter, we will have easily met the terms of the clause and by honoring those terms, I think we would be in the driver's seat for negotiating the elimination of that clause. "We have shown you we are willing to put trust in Thiago through the game time he has received. We hope you honor our trust by agreeing to a settlement which would allow the exclusion of a low buyout fee. Thiago has become a vital player for us and we won't want to let him go easily." If all goes well, they accept, we have a player who plays regularly for us and assuming he does well, would be sold at a very hefty price.

It's also possible if Barca have caved in and offered a new contract, Thiago may wish to see what we offer in return. Based on how we've dealt with transfers in the past, once we ascertain a good value for a player, we usually don't go much higher than what we perceive to be the "final" offer. The kid seems to be weighing up his options. No harm in that. I think if he does stay at Barcelona, he will have to realise he'll just have to wait his turn before he succeeds Xavi. An improved contract won't guarantee more playing time and Tito has already told Thiago he can't make any guarantees.

In my personal opinion, I think they want the blame to fall on Thiago. If Thiago spurning a new contract offer does the trick so be it. Rosell has just been criticised by Barcelona's former president. He needs some sort of deflection tactic. It's how the Spanish media works from what I've gathered. These next few days should be fun. It will be nervy but I think he will come to us. Oh and those who are so skeptical about this transfer saying he won't come here should not be allowed to join in the fun if he does sign for United :smirk:
