The Guardian are probably the only newspaper telling it how it is...that he is probably using the link with us to get a bigger salary at Barca along with assurances that he will get a certain amount of games which they will give him as they are desperate to keep him..his preference is to stay at Barca if they give him what he is looking for...its simply not going to happen...Xavi is 33 years old....Barca need Thiago to replace him in the nearish future

So all media including Catalan are calling it one way, one the other. Yet the one is right?

Saying that a player is about to sign for United generates a lot more interest than saying he isn't. United are linked between dozens of players every year. So being cynical about such stories is logical. Believing the likes of the Daily Star just because you want them to be right is a kids game. Maybe he'll sign for United, maybe he'll get that big new contract. We'll see. But just because there are more gossip stories saying the deal will happen does not make it true. Just that United sell papers.

If you think it's just "the likes of the Daily Star" then you haven't been paying attention. To all 50+ pages.

I'm afraid this is nothing yet to the transfer threads of years past. Are the newbies as obsessed as we are?

Do we care? I'll let The Great Neviller answer this one. Nev, get in here and answer the question.

Great story lol, 2 lines, no quotes

There's actually 4 lines. 2 lines saying we've triggered the release clause, and the other 2 lines saying we've agreed terms with Thiago.

Now where's that fecking Thiagometer.

MANCHESTER UNITED have triggered the £17million release clause in Barcelona midfielder Thiago Alcantara’s contract, after he told the Nou Camp club he was leaving. United have agreed terms with the 22-year-old, who hit a hat-trick in Spain’s European Under-21 final win over Italy.

The feckers doesn't even have a 'more to follow' there. And they get paid for this shit.

All the papers are the same. Why are the Daily Mail or whatever gospel in your eyes? Just lazy journos regurgitating a story again and again, feeding off the easy clicks from muppets desperate to believe their latest crush is signing. If the Daily Mail runs a "Player X to sign for United" story then of course other papers will copy it. Its so easy. But just because they copy it does not make it any truer.

Do you work as a journalist? I'm curious as to how you know how journalism works.
I am not but I have a few colleagues who do and while I understand your skepticism, it's annoying that you have closed your mind to other possibilities. They would find your words very very insulting.

The catalan press hasn't change its tune. Here's the editor of Sport explaining why selling Thiago Alcantara and buying Thiago Silva would be a good move:
http://www.sport.es/es/noticias/jos...hiago-alcantara-seria-cambio-positivo-2431209

Meanwhile Mundo Deportivo are already pointing discussion down the, "he's moving for more wages," track.

If Thiago and his family were just testing the water when this started, I would think the message is starting to look pretty clear now - "Stay if you want, go if you like."

As to why would United be trying to get Barcelona to play along rather than exercising the buyout clause. It's less hassle. It maintains friendly relations between the two clubs and between Thiago and Barca. It avoids the indignity of smuggling Thiago into a medical checkup, which at least theoretically places him in breech of contract.

And if they don't play ball we should spring the release clause before anyone else gets to him.

This. And the English press are saying that he's keen on staying as it'll fit in their agenda of our club being in decline since Sir Alex retired. They'll probably run the headlines that our club has lost its allure to foreign players as they've no idea who Moyes is and would rather join other clubs in Europe.

Even if barca are resigned to losing thiago, they will want to seem they re desperately trying to hang on to him. Whoever is their sporting director knows he LL get lot of stick if they lose thiago (assuming thiago is leaving)

Why does it matter? What possible indication is there that he is considering going there?
If it's true Thiago's camp is willing to listen to all offers then it opens the door to us losing Thiago to chelsea however unlikely that looks. I put the smiley because it's going to further delay the process

What gives it weight is the Catalan press for me. It must be very boring not being able to read anything not from manutd.com.

I think most of us are a bit tired at the moment. We put so much into this thread over the past week that I think we're emotionally, as well as literally, drained. Our cocks have been on show more than in a chicken contest.

Take the weekend off lads. Rejuvenate your batteries. People are right. Nothing is going to happen this weekend. Just get ready for Monday and let it start all over again.

I don't think he'll join us, and I don't think we particularly need him.

Surprised some people don't think we are interested. Blatantly obvious that we are.

Just send in Bolingbroke. He'll get it done.

He acts like he already made up his mind and United and the player are now waiting for Barca to give a green light to trigger medical tests.

Thiago's father, friends, journalists (also on twitter) are all aware of his desire to play for United to get a full season and it's showing in almost every news. The whole case seems to be very logical from player's perspective but everything must be done in a healthy atmosphere and that's why it requires some time.

There's nothing to worry about, though as United is are very experienced side in terms of longer negotiations.
