Thiago Alcantara | Pool bound

29 years old is the peak of someone's career. It would be an honor for any club to get someone with the skills of Thiago in their prime.

Stefan Effenberg and Zinedine Zidane both joined respectively Bayern Munich and Real Madrid at age 30 and led them to Champions League glory.

Some are acting like 29 is half retired. Thiago will be world class for 4+ more years, easily.
Sporting wise this makes much more sense than getting a 33 year old Messi.

For every Zidane there is a Sanchez.

Moving to a new league, on a massive contract is a risk. Clearly every transfer has an element of risk, but with the physical demands these days, and the big costs, you can understand some apprehension.

Its a fair point regarding physical demands but we would then have squad depth and could rotate. No player would need to be run into the ground. We would also have a superb balance of youth and experience in the squad. I would love us to pick up an attacking fullback also.

Deeplying playmaker of world class ilk..
90% it's bait but would be so nice if it materializes

He was more logical signing than de Beek. But i guess, Ole is preparing Fred for dmc.
Liverpool have clear path now to sign him.

The players that drop off a cliff as soon as they get close to their 30's are almost exclusively players who rely on their physique and their speed. Thiago's main strengths are his technique and his brain. He'll likely play to a high level for five or six more years. The only worry for me is his injury record.

I should have probably specified. I used both Effenberg and Zidane as examples as they play similar roles to Thiago, and their games relied on vision, passing, and good ball control similar to Thiago.

Players with such skill set can have peaks well into their 30's.
Unlike Sanchez, who relied (in part) on speed.

Both Effenberg and Zidane won UEFA player of the year too btw, after moving.

Do we need Thiago after getting DVB ?
They are a bit different on what they woud add from my impressions and what many would say, Thiago would give us something unique in the deeplying playmaker role, but seem he is Liverpool bound sadly.
With turkey calling on Fred should, it materialize, and 1-2 marginalised sales, he could join us for a net value hard to say no to, potentially 3-4 more years of high class performance in him, and with our (feel odd to say) depth he would get a good rest now and then as needed.

Would say 26-27
Barring plagues of injury, 29-30 is more common. In the old days the drop off after 30 was often pretty steep but these days the conditioning and lifestyle means drop off is slower. A lot of players are barely mature at 26 - so not sure how you came up with that.

We’ve got a few in their mid twenties now and I sure hope they’re going to get better. I’m mainly thinking of Pogba.

Anyway, provided the injury history is ok, 29-32 should be very good years.

There's risk with any transfer but if world class proven winners are available you don't say no on the off chance it doesn't work out

Ffs Thiago would not be coming here to provide competition or sit on the bench for Matic.

Who said he'd sit on the bench? He'd compete and be trusted as the starter over Matic, should we get him.

It would be a Pogba-Thiago-Bruno midfield with VDB pushing for his place.

I'd possibly forgive the board for failing to bring Sancho in (for this year) if they managed to pull this one off

Thiago would be an unbelievable Next signing . If we could Some how Box off VdB , Thiago and Sancho I honestly think we have a title chance next year.

We’d have better midfield and front 3 than Liverpool on paper but a defence And keeper which doesn’t really compare.

Thiago Pogba Bruno would be a truly disastrous midfield. Biblically bad. You need DM in with 2 of them.

He's off to Dipperville anyway

It'll be fine. You'll see. (You probably won't, though)

I really hope Liverpool's moneyball thing decides he's too old and had too many injuries and we step in, he's majestic in the DLP role, finally we'd have a true Carrick replacement but with some added Scholes quality for €30M, it's a risk worth taking.

Stick to fifa mate. Thiago isn't a DM. He's also not coming to us. Those reports are BS to make Liverpool pay up.

He worked in a two man midfield for the team that won the CL this year, with a striker playing ahead of them. He can work in that position against most teams, just need to give Pogba instructions to sit back with him.

Say this all you want but he's filled in pretty well for Bayern. Sure he had great partners next to him but there are players capable of complimenting him here too. You would tweak the system slightly but he can operate with Pogba.

Pogba is a complete liability defensively and needs somebody far more disciplined than Thiago.

Tremendous player but not the right partner for Pogba at all. And the links to us are clear BS. We have just signed VDB. We won't sign another CM clearly.

He was more logical if you take Pogba out of the equation otherwise Donny makes more sense.

It worked for him because he had Goretzka beside him as the DM.

A Pogba and Thiago double pivot would struggle against a a quality team who are good at applying high pressure. Thiago would end up doing more chasing in the DM role which would be a waste of his talents.
