Thiago Alcantara | New contract

Just scored a magnificent goal, Barca are silly if they let go of this lad - he looks quality.

I'd take Martinez and Thiago, I reckon you could get the pair for £30m/£35m.

He's impressed me since I started taking notice of him. I do wonder if he could grow into the kind of midfielder we're looking for. However it would be a gutsy move for Fergie to bring him in as the possible solution. I can see he's definitely got the ability, imagination and workrate plus a good education from Barcelona.

Is he tough enough to adjust to English football though?

Great goal. And in the later stages of the match he was putting in some nice tackles too

That was interesting to see, he's certainly a great prospect, I'm not sure why Barca seem to be at ease over letting him go.

Rodwell didn't start against Spain, instead Mancienne played and he looked cack. Rodwell came on about the 70th minute mark, and made an immediate difference to how we played.

England looked lost against Spain U21 despite them having (at one point) around 45m worth of talent in CM. I was particularly impressed by England's U21 keeper, defense and forward line but the midfield is weak and it reflects a bad mentality that need to be changed (ie not enough emphasis is made on how important ball possession is). Someone with such good mentality (Alcantara, Martinez etc) may help the local kids (ex Ravel Morrison) of their same age to improve

What's the betting this story will be picked up by the papers.

I doubt Barca will let him go (and i'm not sure he will leave them this early in his career).

Javi Martinez on the other hand....now that's a player we should be looking at.

Thiago would be Barcelona next big thing. He is love child of Ronaldinho and Xavi. No way in million years Barcalona would sell him.

Because they know that if he goes and becomes really good elsewhere they can make overtures about wanting him back whenever and he'll kick up a fuss

Not seen him much, is he like a Xavi-like clone? Then we should really buy him for 20m and sell him for double of that 4 seasons later

Reported in the Daily Fail and the Mirror. Clearly they saw this thread and thought it'd be a good idea to post rubbish about United being after him.

Saw that as well. Seems like any useless cnut can pass off a journo these days as long as you have access to the internet and a Redcafe bookmark.

No thanks. Don't want him crying every summer about wanting to go back to Barca

The name Thiago Alcantara really has a nice ring to it. Looks like a handy player as well.

can't remember pique crying, just that he had Rio and Vidic ahead of him and didn't want to wait.

Pique was 21 or something when he left, Fabregas didn't make a fuss either then but I think if and when Barcelona come knocking back for their players (should they have left on good terms of course, maybe even not) when they start reaching their prime they might want to go back. If Barca had interest in Pique and made it as public as they did with Fabregas and we refused to sell, Pique could have been moaning about it eventually.

Not all players are the same, I accept that, but Barcelona (and Madrid) have this stupid pull to bring back almost any player the sold and want back. If Thiago does well for us, Barca will probably want him back and I'm pretty sure he will be more than willing to go back to a club where he might feel he has unfinished business.

Of course, I don't know the guy so I shouldn't really just assume he'll go back if they came for him but its a worry I'd have if we got him.

Doesn't this guy have a younger brother in Barca's academy who is rated even higher? I might be thinking of a different player, but pretty sure it's him. Crazy the amount of talent they produce.

His younger brother, Rafinha, is currently a member of the FC Barcelona B.

not sure whether rafinha is rated higher than him though...

Can't see him go on the cheap. Barca aren't really flowing with cash and they might want a lot for him.
If he does leave, that is. Barca would be loath to let him leave.

Anybody seen this lad play? I know he scored an absolute belter of a free kick but otherwise how impressive is he? I heard we just made a £15m bid for him but Barca are reluctant to sell him to us - surprise surprise!
