Thiago Alcantara at Bayern

I understand that but like RVP, thiago is a star whose potential is known worldwide so you cant exactly deny it. Its not like you need a scout to establish that this player will be a one of the best midfielders in the world barring injury. The only doubt he could have had is about his mentality which again can be document and you could take pep's word on it.

Plus like I said everton havent signed too many stars either so its not like things look like improving in the future.

RVP doesn't exactly have potential, he's a proven goalscorer in the Premier League...his potential has been realized. Moyes has shown so far that he is very much his own man, I am not surprised that he would not trust the previous scouting reports or at least not be comfortable with them. That being said, it could be a simple as worrying that a deal for Thiago was too good to be true; bargain price, a player full of potential that Barcelona didn't want to keep. But back to my original point, I think United's scouts did poorly as far as identifying, obtaining and retaining talent in the last few years, I'm not surprised Moyes might take their recommendations with a pinch of salt.

I agree with this but am saying like RVP, thiago was a sure thing or is one I guess. I meant like he is not a hidden gem like hernandez or someone like bebe where you need to trust the scout's judgement.

I agree with this that the performace of united scouts has been very underwhelming in the past although we dont know how many targets they identified which we never went for but when you read stuff like isco was considered too slow for us, it makes you wonder.

Retaining talent is not their job.

We also don't know who they identified and SAF/Moyes refused to buy. It is hard to blame or praise them, as we simply don't have enough information.

We gotta get Kroos to make up for this, one door closes and another opens and all that jazz.

The whole Bayern Munich team were poor (by their standards)

Yes one assist for Thiago too......if that's enough for "Player of the Match" then okay.........but i was surprised Kroos has left the pitch in the 60.min instead of Thiago.......he has done nothing apart from the goal and assist
But hey that's sometimes enough for great players right? :)

Has he done well so far at bayern? The hype seems to have died down.

Thank god we didn't sign this guy. Wouldn't improve our midfield at all.

Alcantara breaks Bundesliga record for touches in a game

Signed from Barcelona in the summer, Thiago Alcantara is beginning to make an impact at Bayern Munich. The Spanish central midfielder last week scored an incredible acrobatic overhead 93rd minute winner.

Today, he broke two records during Bayern’s 5-0 win over Frankfurt, having 185 touches and making 159 passes. Bastian Schweinsteiger previously held the Bundesliga record with a now-meager 155 touches.

Hate seeing this thread bumped because it means he's done something good and it makes me wonder what could have been. He'd be wasted here spreading the ball wide and not expressing himself anyway. Bitter much

Incredible player. 100 passes in 72 minutes for Spain vs Italy. 97 % accuracy.

Makes our decision not to throw money at him over the summer even more depressing.

Yes, he got the chance to play for Pep at Bayern, but if we had of committed to the sums of money that people are saying Moyes will spend this coming summer, we surely would have been in with a shout.

Young, confident, technical midfielder. Basically an anti-Cleverley?

I somehow do not think that at the end he would have decided for the most money. Barca and Bayern both do not pay like beggars. He was on a point in his career where he needed a change and the chance to play somewhere where he is trusted. He was on the step somehow between a talent that was not taken for full - and a full player.

I really like all I see from him - and I include times when he plays a little bit risky or makes mistakes - he does not really make much but he still is very young. This transfer was important for him - and he is somebody that is absolutely positive off the pitch trying to suck in everything he can from Germany, too - especially during the time he was injured. He did not need long to be liked and to be accepted in the Bayern team - and being the import of the coach that is usually not the easiest thing (so the Bayern players are not the complicated ones).

We didn't have enough intel on him in the ICloud to firm up our interest. No worries our scouts have got IPads now.

I can only think that the reason we passed up Thiago was because we thought we were onto a sure thing with Fabregas.....

Ironically, Thiago leaving made Fabregas less likely to leave

Thiago would have been my first choice for sure

Thiago was a risk for a foreign coach. He stagnated in his team - it was not only the lack of match time - he did not even play very well in this time last season. Too much risk to put in the talent that he was without knowledge of the league - maybe with a question to how he would perform in the EPL.

I can fully understand Moyes with this. Maybe some homegrown players get time - but not foreign talents that cost a big transfer sum...

i wouldn't say he was a risk, talents stagnate all the time at Barca or Madrid, what he had shown though prior to last season his ability as a top talent, he found it hard to break in at Barca but at the same time he was the best player alongside Isco in the u21 championships.

He cost €18m, even if he didn't adapt to Premier League and was just poor we'd still be able to sell him for at least half of that sum based on reputation alone. Money wasn't the issue, if anything it was probably down to this extensive scouting argument people have come up with in the Summer.
