Gaming The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

For some reason it happens everywhere - reddit for example - where Witcher 3 is mentioned. It's constantly being compared to Fallout 4, even though they are pretty different games, apart from both being open world games that came out in 2015.
Sure the games are different but there are sufficient similarities for both games to attract largely the same audience. And since they were the two most high profile games for that audience in the same year, there's bound to be a lot of overlap in the discussions. I don't see the problem. Comparing stuff is just natural. A game doesn't exist in a vacuum after all.

I agree. It's like in the Black Panther thread where some are bitching about it being compared to something else, well, so what? Reference points are necessary in merit discussions.

As long as it isn't always "Well xxx is better than this new game" kind of shit, Witcher fanboys are insufferable with that

Their hate for Fallout 4 is children's play compared to mine, me being a Fallout fanboy.

I fell in love with Witcher 3 but I really struggled to get into Fallout 4. I don't know why, I played about 24 hours in Fallout and found myself uninterested in completing it. Probably because of the story and main quests. Exploration is great but story and main quests couldn't get me interested in completing it at all. Also the game was trying too hard to become a shooter rather than an RPG and shooting was pretty lame and boring after a while. However pretty sure anyone who loves exploration will enjoy it. Maybe the story became better later, I don't know, but I don't think my opinion would have changed much about shooting mechanics.

probably because Fallout 4 is a really average game.

Didn't want to say it that way in case there're fans of it here. :D The game just didn't feel like a good RPG for me. Lame story and trying to force shooting whose mechanics were terrible. It felt like it has no identity for me, apart from exploration if one loves it. Most quests were "go to some place, murder everything, return". Some will say this can be applied to any other game but if you combine this with the terrible shooting mechanics the results aren't good.

This should obviously be discussed in the GTA thread.
I'm trying to find a game similar to Witcher 3 because it's my favourite game which is why I asked for a comparison. I don't know the GTA thread. Is it the general gaming thread?

It was a joke based on the amount of off-topic discussion going on here ;)
Unfortunately I can't tell you anything about Horizon Zero Dawn and how it compares to The Witcher.

Monster Hunter world kinda has similar elements and will take up hours of your life if that is what you’re wanting, but the story depth is very different if that is what you want.

Has anyone played Horizon Zero Dawn? If so how does it compare to Witcher 3

Definitely one of the best games on the PS4 and worth the buy.

It doesn’t quite have the personality that Witcher 3 has as a game, but it’s very good nonetheless. It plays beatifully and has amazing graphics as well.

It exceeds Witcher as an action game with its tight and quick combat, but has nowhere near the quality of RPG elements as Witcher. In terms of amount of side quests, strength of story and dialogue options, Witcher is miles better here. But Witcher 3 is just simply the best ever here so it’s not a big critisism.

I haven't played this for months, but has Geralt's movement always felt like controlling a boat?

It felt ok for me first time round :/ but when replaying it felt clunky for the first couple hours. Horizon zero dawn got movement down much better, which has probably made me think Witcher is clunkier the 2nd time round.

There are two different modes, one with reduced weight for Geralt's motions (->more direct reaction to movement input).

Which is that again?

You battle a Leshen in the middle of the woods. I think I liked it because I thought the Leshen was an incredible looking monster.

I've also recently made a controversial decision to turn the in-game music off. The soundtrack is fantastic, but it was starting to get irritating wandering around Novigrad after the amount of time I spent there.

I actually think the game is even better without the music...

Finally gone to Skellige at level 24... I think I should have done it a bit sooner because the few things i've done so far have been a breeze.

Skellige looks amazing

It's the end of Geralt's journey as a main character but it doesn't mean there won't be other games set in that universe in the future

They have said as much. They do have the licenses and they are sure they will return to the universe one day. Just not with Geralt. Better to go this way than make some weird kind of Assasins Creed out of it, good for them. Their new game also very likely has a Ciri cameo in it for anyone interested.

Story and Sword or Blood and Broken Bones? Leaning towards the former unless it’s ridiculously too easy.

With the right potions and enough preperation, everything can be rather easy. It's no Dark Souls and it never was intended to be. If you are indeed willing to put all that time in potion making, it just prolongs the experience (not necessarily for the better)

Story and Sword for me. The games main strengths are the narrative aspects of it. By playing in higher difficulties, you need to spend a lot of time collecting ingredients to make potions. If that is fun for you, cool, otherwise go for S and S.

The game is huge anyway, it took me 60 hours or so wihh a lot of people spending over 100 hours. Adding another 10-20 hours looking for flowers and killing x enemies to make a certain potion just didn't have any appeal on me.

Made it to Kaehr Morhen, haven't yet finished every quest in Velen and Novigrad, sitting on 60 hours...

I loved the game, but usually don't have patience for side missions and after a bit, Witcher contracts became too boring for me so skipped them. The War side quests (the ones with Philippa, Radomir and co.) were top notch, but the others a bit repetitive (thought better than in most games) and I just can't stand repetitive things.

This game kind of wrecked RPGs for me. Always looking for a similar immersive 3D RPG experience, but nothing has come close.

Only game that’s come close to the Witcher for me was god of war, And the only thing in it was god of war could have gone on a touch longer.
