Gaming The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Dling this now on my new laptop! Can't wait, do people recommend buying a controller for it?
If you like playing with a controller, go for it - but keyboard and mouse works just fine.
It's really amazing what CD Projekt Red have done with these games. Publishing them themselves and ignoring DRM, generally doing everything the right way has let them increase their budgets tenfold for each succeeding game and then reap the profits as a result. Apparently The Witcher 3 has grossed 600% more than The Witcher 2 already. Just unbelievable.

I just wish the big publishers would take note, but sadly they probably won't.
Yeah, CDPR is one of my favourite devs and publishers, along with Paradox.

Like you say, they just do things the right way. The first Witcher suffered a lot from what was clearly a very small budget for the game they were making, but they managed to release a game that was still very good and they used the money to fix it. Ubisoft's stance on issues in FarCry and Assassin's Creed has been "don't worry, we'll fix that in the next €60 game in the series".
Anybody here player the original Witcher game, just picked it up off steam for 1.20 and was wondering if it is any good?
I played both the original version and the enhanced version they put out where they fixed a lot of issues. It's a very good game. It's that good, that it survived having regular loading screens that literally took minutes at release and quite low quality voice-acting - a lot of people just loved the game anyway. The enhanced version (which reduced load times by about 80%!) fixes most of the technical issues.

They've really done it the right way, every detail of Witcher 3 is very well thought about. They've probably managed to create the best open world up to date and I had already been extremely impressed by GTA, RDR and such. The amount of effort they've put into side quests is incredible really, they could have simply neglected it and stick to the main quest and only put usual stuff 'go there, pick up that' into side quests - it would have still been a very good game regardless but they've gone and basically put several side quests that could have been a separate game altogether. It's a living world where people have their problems, lead their lives and you it draws you in immediately.

The best game I have ever played I think. I will decide once I have finished it but so far it definitely looks like it.

I've genuinely fallen in love with Triss. I'm a hairy grown man and I've fallen in love with some pixels.

The writing in this is quite something, I mean it was already top notch in the previous two witcher games but they've outdone themselves here.

I am absolutely loving this game.

I only started on Friday night but barely put it down over the weekend. I was half tempted to pull a sickie today or even book the whole week off work!

I'm only at level 8 but I can already tell this will be pushing towards the top of my greatest games of all time list

Currently exploring the Skellig islands and it is simply amazing. The beautiful scenery is only made more beautiful with the wonderfully atmospheric 'fields of ard skellig' soundtrack. Definitely the greatest game I have played in my lifetime.

Is it worth going to all the question marks in the sea in Skellige? I've been to a few and they just have shitty treasure. I already have master crafted armour and weapons, so not sure there's anything to gain...

Any news on a second patch? So annoying that I can't play this til they fix it.

Almost (if not) all at the sea seems to be just treasure, yeah. Not sure how many hours I've wasted getting them so far, but I'm almost done!

Wolf Gear better look as awesome as it sounds.

I thought so. I feel like I'm doing the game a disservice not going to every point everywhere, but I'll probably give them a miss. The thought that I might be missing out on a quest, though...

Yeah I meditated for about 9 in game days. I've seen other people talking about the same problem.
Ah. This appears to be a 'hotfix' and more patches should be on the way. More waiting it would seem, unfortunately.

Going through some low level missions now which I missed out earlier, and it's getting fecking annoying.

Mechanics have all gone to shit, nothing seems smooth now. Fighting seems random as feck, walking and moving about is just retarded now. You always seem to fight a long battle, get them down to 1 hit left and they smash you somehow... Yeah right. feck off. It's getting tedious now.

Sick of using my "witcher senses" too.

Can someone gives me tip on how to level up pretty quickly? I'm struggling to move up the gears

On most games like this where it's an open world I tend to become Superman and then do all the missions but seems I can't get away with it here

Yeah, that's one of the best things about the game IMO. You can't just run around killing everything from the off and go to places you're not meant to be yet. Makes exploring all the more satisfying when you are ready.

Really wish they'd give us more Triss content. You rarely see her after Novigrad.
Yeah, a minor pet peeve with the game was that regardless of who you as the player decide is your love interest, Yen becomes the basis of the story progression, which is kind of understandable given that its the first game in the series she's properly appeared. It just seemed odd that, i went to novigrad first, did the triss segment made her my love interest, then for the rest of the game i was with yennifer with no interaction other than the odd "how you doing triss" small talk.

Also, i love how if you do decide to go the triss route, the rest of the game makes you feel insanely guilty about bailing on yennifer

It just makes no sense from the perspective of the games. If you've played the first two witcher games, you would have been familiar with Triss as a long-term romance option. You rarely hear of Yennefer. Suddenly, the Witcher 3 shoves Yennefer in our face for the first time and expects us to acknolwedge her as our main romance option.

Fair enough there's a case for Yennefer being the more cannon option considering the books, but for those who've only played the games it feels a tad bit odd. They could have at least fleshed out Triss' romance arc.

Just started, I'm level 5, takes a while to level up. Loving it so far, took a while to get to grips with the combat which was a bit finicky at first.

Why do i have to download a 500mb file everytime there is a patch?

Yeah, Yennefer's character development and exposure was a lot more fleshed out in this game. I didn't mind much because I prefer her to Triss but it was a little strange when you consider what you say. All in all though, the last arc was very rushed, and that must have a direct correlation to Triss' screen time. Time constraints really must have gotten the better of the team.

I sure do hope the expansion packs include some more of the main characters in it. The first one will likely not as it's in Velen and is described as basically a 10 hour worth contract with lots of twists. The Toussaint package is what I'm banking on.

Aside from the new DLC pack, the game is also set to release a patch update that will fix most known and reported issues. Patch updates 1.06 (for the PC version) and 1.05 (for the PS4 and Xbox version) will come later this week. Here is the list of patch notes for the update:

  • Fixes the endless loading screen when fighting the Ice Giant during the quest "Lord of Undvik".
  • Geralt's clothes will no longer be wet after leaving the menu.
  • The gate in the crypt now works correctly during the quest "Scavenger Hunt: Viper School Gear".
  • Fixes the lack of interaction with Roche on Oxenfurt Bridge in the quest "Get Junior".
  • Fixes an issue that prevented players from creating more than one item via Crafting/Alchemy.

Oh yeah sort out those poor people who have a lack of interaction with Roche on a certain quest and just leave fixing the bug that stops people from advancing in the game.

Just finished it. What a fecking game! Really love all the small interaction and looks between Geralt and Ciri - so much attention to detail in the development.
Wild Hunt's attack on Kaer Morhen. Wow. Just epic - incredible put together.
Was also incredibly satisfying destroying Dijkstra's leg after he refused to help

Ended up alone ("takes three to tango" was a fecking cocktease. Bastards!) because I slept with Triss, but as the main quest unfolded I realised Yen would play a much bigger role so I thought it would be more fitting to "switch". Annoyed me a little that you didn't have a chance to really make a pick, but I guess it makes sense. But Ciri lived :D

Experienced very few issues myself - had to reinstall the game at some point after it kept crashing when I tried to load games (although I realised I didn't even try rebooting seconds after I clicked uninstall, so not sure if a reinstall was actually required!). Ran very smoothly in general, despite the fact that I ran on settings significantly higher than recommended and my computer being more than two years old. Didn't notice any frame drops at any point.

I just completed the quest to get the master armourer, started it without realising too. Then realised it was one of the ones with a little red skull because I was only level 15  Easy enough in the end.

Honestly, Ciri as a character is up there with Clementine from the walking dead games for the best female game characters. You genuinely develop a bond with her, as sad as that seems.

.
It was his other leg too, so he's now a complete cripple thanks to Geralt. Though, by doing that you miss out on the Radovid assassination quest, which means he wins the war at the end and kills all non humans he gets his hands on.

Hmm, just got killed by a floor with a spike trap. First time i've seen any sort of traps in the game.

Yeah, that's the down-side. Still worth it though! Definitely going to re-play it at some point though and make some other choices.

Yeah this game is all fecking over the shop tbh, smashing level 26 quests, then failing at level 16 ones? What the feck? Like seriously, it's just random now.

Really hated that quest with the woman witch in the caves/underground. Those stupid poisonous gas clouds drove my nut in.

Triss or Yen... Triss or Yen... hmmm, I could clearly settle down with a nice fun Triss.

Although, surely the more moody/weird Yen would be into the kinkier sex... Hrmmm
