Gaming The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

feck me, this game is so good. The side quests induce so well - material is incredible in all facets. Blows other RPGs to shreds. Either I'm playing at a pace too quick, or I'm just playing way more than you lot are. Either way, I'll post my thoughts. I'm sure you when you guys hit these side quests you'll agree. Read on if you're somewhat far into the game with the side quests (starting from Crows Perch and ending in Novigrad area).

The Bloody Baron's quest is ridiculous. Probably my favourite so far. The fact is he is such a nuanced character; simplicity would reduce him to scum but he is thrown thrown a shred of mourn and redemption, with regards to all that has happened, and this all lays on a very difficult moral dilemma that you choose in an alternate side quest, with the trapped spirit in the tree. The way this one concluded was so moving, I didn't expect it at all and it really, really hit me.

Then you have the 'A Towerfull of Mice' quest, which is met with a real macabre backdrop, and ends in such a grim tone. That kiss, man.

Oh, and then you have the quest with Dandelion/Priscilla. Which starts with a very upbeat, regular RPG-like mundane task of helping your dopey idiot of a friend sort out his Cabaret show but then transforms into a morbid hunt of a despicable serial killer, whose killings were flat out cold, even by this games standard. This quest also had a sick irony to it, it starts with Priscilla singing a beautiful tale (which, judging by the lyrics I assume was about Yen and Geralt) to turn culminating in her potentially never singing again.

It looks set to sweep GOTY for me. Perhaps Arkham Knight has the capacity to best it, but I can't see that happening.

Bloodborne will also be in with a big shout. That game is also incredible.

Bloodborne is more difficult and hence much less accessible for most people. I have approached it even though it was too tough for me and I had some good time with and intend to have much more (I'm only at the beginning) but Witcher 3 is much more entertaining and complex, its storytelling is on a different level altogether too. Combat is way, way behind Bloodborne obviously (like any other game) and setting and art style is obviously up to people's taste - personally I absolutely loved both. In terms of storytelling it could be one of the best I've ever played, even the side quests are done wonderfully and the world is full of amazing nuances, you literally stumble upon something interesting every two mintues when you're on the road.

I'm so happy that I have this and Bloodborne to play through the Summer, with a small interval for the new Batman. And Dragon Age if I finally pick it up properly but it's a testament to how good Witcher is that I've had Dragon Age for 5 months and have barely played 5 hours of it as I keep convincing myself that I need to have time on my hands to get into it properly and I've already played more of Witcher 3 within three days from launch because there's just so much more to do and it even works fine as a pick up and play game if you just want to explore or do some side quests.

Just ordered a brand new GTX 970. Been enjoying the game but I'll be putting it on hold for a few days until I get that bad boy

I see. I've looted a lot so far but have not picked up anything that great.

Do you also notice a bit of stuttering while moving the camera at a slower pace on PS4? Probably the only technical issue I have right now that is noticable. Framerate has somehow steadied and is good now, I expect it to be completely fine after 1.0.3 update that will probably land on PSN within 2-3 days. Graphics are gorgeous for an open world game, and I'll say it again - the design of the whole world is absolutely spectacular.
I've not noticed any stuttering issues tbh.

I reckon it's probably the best action/western style RPG I've played.

The game is huge, like really over the top huge. I love the game but feck me the amount of quests and points of interest is really overwhelming at times. The second zone is mind blowing there's something to see and do every 100 yards it seems.

It's not fluid for me if you move camera slowly, it moves in increments I'd say. Still very good from technical side for such a huge open world despite minor flaws (@Redlambs will slag it off and say it's terrible anyway though).

 The game or the stuttering? I'm yet to play this, but if it's moved on decently from the other 2, then I'm sure I'll like it.

Also, the unmarked stuff, I was just wandering between points of interest, and came upon some bandits burning a house down, and someone to save.

I tried moving it really slowly, and it's moving well for me.

This game is absolutely immense. Just got out of the White Orchard and found myself in Velen, it's about ten times the size of White Orchard with plenty more things to do. I went back to White Orchard and immediately got a great contract.

Stupid question - where can I buy some new weapon? I think I have the money now.
Save the gold for now. Very mild sidequest loot spoilers ahead:

Look for a question mark on the White Orchard map that looks to be in the middle of an oval shaped wall. Go there and you should find a grave yard with a level 7 wraith, fight it during the day and it's fairly easy to kill, then blow down the door to the tomb and fight it again. Win and search tomb for diagrams for 2 very good swords. You should have most of the material except for emerald dust, which you can use that gold to buy from blacksmiths. I'm level 8 and still using those 2 swords.

It's the Viper Witcher Sword I have as well, but my steel sword is some looted one, need to get the 2nd Viper sword forged.

How is the framerate for you? I don't think it's anything with my game, seen some youtube footage and it looks similar. I might reinstall it but it probably won't do anything and there's surely no way that there's anything wrong with my copy.

It's probably how the character moves that gives away this impression to be fair.

I spent ages gathering the gold to get emerald dust and make the steel one, went the whole way back to White Orchard because I knew the guy there had the dust. Paid the almost 600g, got it forged. Returned to Velen and went on my merry way. Two minutes later I found some emerald dust. Livid I was.

They are very good swords though, the poison effect is very useful.

Seems fine to me everything flows well. I'm not especially sensitive to minor framerate issues and junk, I guess.

Geez, I'd have cracked up! I definitely need to get the steel one though, the lv 10 bandits are giving me some hassle.

High level bandits I can handle, they are stupid and not too aggressive, you can separate them and pick them off a lot of the time. Drowners on the other hand even level 4 ones are killing me in a couple of hits at times. They have stupidly long reach and are highly aggressive. Separating them doesn't work as they will just leap at you anyway.

Too me a while to get used to the Drowners, but I'm grand with them now, AXII to keep one at bay helps.

Firstly, use your fast attacks with them since they're too quick for your strong attacks.

Secondly, learn to time dodge. Before just before they swing at you dodge to the side and immediately counter with a few hits, then back out. Rinse and repeat.

I've been playing it on low settings @ 1080p pretty smoothly but it just doesn't look good at all. Very basic.
I have it set up with the nvidia optimiser . And it looks good and plays smooth at 1080p. I will upgrade at the end of the year. But no way am i going to fork out just for one game to make it look a little prettier .

You pricks. Now I've got to buy another bloody game and I won't be home until Monday.

Did quite a few quests in the city of Novigrad, pumped a shameful amount of hours into it (the "joys" of not having a full time job) and I still have a ton of stuff to do in Velen/Novigrad, haven't even being to the Skellige Islands.

@DWelbz19 I stopped reading when you mentioned
Prescilla as I haven't finished the Dandelion arc yet
. But I agree with everything you said, never thought I'd be moved by a Witcher game considering how bad the voice acting was in previous games but my God is it some of the best I've heard in recent times. This is just on another level in every department beside performance (inconsistent frame rate, hopefully it's patched)

This is perfection, it's without the greatest videogame I've ever had the pleasure to play! I really don't want it to end! And I fcuking love Gwent!!

Also, I went to a barbers and turned Geralt in Fabio. The pornstar, not our former Brazilian.

kin ell Stoney what % of the game have you even done to feel that way?

I'm getting this today and now I'm intimidated.

I remember playing Skyrim where I'd have 20 active quests, try to focus on one and then end up with another 5.

Its not too bad. The side quests are actually interesting and not the "kill 20 beavers to cure my kids hemorrhoids" type you get in Skyrim and DraonAge. Just take your time with it and try to do everything at a reasonable pace.

No idea, but I put a fcuk load of hours in and experienced enough of the game to see it's unmatched by anything out there as an overall package.

Fair play. I still haven't had much chance to play. Only made it to the card game which seemed really cool.

The "sidequests" are bloody excellent on this. A game of this size you sort of expect them to be fairly generic but they branch off in really interesting directions and storylines.

I agree with the side quests being much better. Maybe the fact that it's his actual job to be a monster hunter/tracker also helps with immersion.

But even then, they're still better than, "Hey, I don't know you but fancy grabbing 10 bear skins so me logging business can take of again? Okay, thanks bye."

I've been specifically avoiding the card game, seems really good, enough that I could get hooked on it rather than continuing questing.

Like FFVIII, the game where you travel the world to play cards, and once a blue moon kill monsters with your mates, to get more cards.

You should really play it because a) its fun and a nice little break from the main action b) if you are burning through quests without playing anyone at gwent your probably missing out on rare/good cards, c) did I mention its fun?

Gwent, more gwent.

I heard it's ridiculously hard, no? A must-have for RPG fans, but beyond that it will narrow it's reach to grasp casual gamers.

Nice. If you grow out your beard, Yen will make a comment about how she likes it when you first talk to her in Skellige. I can't add anything but to echo you echoing my thoughts. It's brilliant.

That said... The plot in Skellige is the weakest thus far. It's still very action packed and solid, but not as immersive and plot-deep as the stuff in Velen/Novigrad. I've still got plenty of sidequests and contracts to do here though, so it may change.

Also, anyone in Novigrad so far? I've found two (what can I only imagine are) glitched merchants who buy anything you own for it's actual price. Good for selling your trophies from contracts to. They only have 500 coins though, and I'm not when/if they replenish, I tried meditating a few times but it didn't work.

I haven't touched Gwent at all yet. Is it really that good?

Is Gwent fixed on ps4 yet? I accidentally ended up missing it out in white orchard in the end as the historian fella had gone by the time I'd done most of the quests there and was ready to move on. So that's one card I'm presuming I won't get :( Unless he reappears if I go back at some point.

I have a feeling I'll get properly into it when they fix the fact it hard crashes the game!

It's alright, just like Triple Triad is alright... It doesn't hold my attention. I just end up going to play Hearthstone or Magic The Gathering  Why play Tennis in GTA5 when you can play Virtual Tennis 4? Side content like that is pretty pointless to me.

22 hours or so in right now. Pretty good game :)

Played a ton of gwent on PS4, haven't had a single crash which is odd given it's a common issue, guess I got lucky (it will now crash won't it).

You can skip the first witcher to be honest. Story wasn't particularly epic and the events of it aren't really all that important for The Witcher 3. Its still a decent game in its own right, but the clunky combay is seriously dated. Just watch a retrospective story recap on YouTube and you'll honestly be good to go.

The Witcher 2 though is pretty solid stuff, I'll recommend playing it and the Witcher 3 back to back.
I've been watching The Witcher 1 story on youtube...Watched 2 hours so far (it's like 8 hours in total!) and its been pretty terrible so far. I think you are right about skipping it. Been playing Witcher 2 on the 360 and nearly finished Flotsam now.

I don't think I actually like the story/lore/world of the series. Not as much as Dragon Age anyway which I found really interesting.

Really? Dragon Age is as cliche as it gets.

There's a lot of interesting stuff like the Black City and how it got corrupted, history behind the red lyrium and the blight, relationship between the elven gods and the old gods, Flemeth/Mythal/Fen'harel motives, etc. I always read the codex stuff I find to try and figure out more. I wouldn't say its that cliche...it has good backstory!

Stick with it, it gets really interesting from the second act onwards.

Oh, and if I were you, I'd:
Side with Iorveth, it makes the second half of the game more epic

I've actually finished Witcher 2 before many years ago. I think I sided with Roche the first time so will go Iorveth for this playthrough. I can't remember anything about the story at all so it feels like I'm playing it for the first time again

The only thing I remember is

Fighting the bald guy at the end and letting him live for some reason...he must have been very convincing and I need to finish this game again as I'm really curious what he's up to

It took a little while to get going but I'm really enjoying the game I think it's up there with all of the best RPG's. The story in this is really good and I love all of the different characters. Some parts of the game are really quite creepy.
Just got to Novigrad which is by far my favourite area I had got a bit bored of the small villages and windy tree areas. They have done a great job with the quests, every single one feels important and has been fun to play for me. I also like the way decision making works in this game. I feel like I have already made some pretty big decisions that have dramatically affected my game and storyline.
Couple of negatives I feel like the horse could control a bit better. You spend a lot of time on it and he seems to always get tangled up with the environment or goes the wrong way for me. I also wish it was just one big map that I can zoom in and out of it really bugs me when I zoom out too far and I end up on the world map. Last thing is it really necessary to go to a signpost to fast travel? Just seems a bit unnecessary and a bit of a chore.
