Gaming The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Trying to give gwent a fair crack. Where can I buy good cards?
Try looking in every new tavern you find and asking what's on offer and sometimes the innkeeper has new cards to purchase. The best way though is to play every single person you come across and you win one new card from every player you beat. If you lose then you only lose the money and no cards.

It's a really addictive game when you get used to it. I hated it on my first playthrough, can't get enough of it on every playthrough since then

Cheers. I have a semi-decent deck now. Beat all the players in Velen. I went to try and play the innkeeper in Novigrad though and he destroyed me.

Think I beat him last night (if it's that Stepjal guy) and got a decent card. Built up the Nilfgaard deck now but I feel so comfortable using Northern Realms.

Almost got enough Scoia'tael to use that deck too so I will experiment with them.

Yep, that's the one. I have pretty good cards but need to just have a bit of luck when I play him as his cards are still much better.

Yeah some have crazy decks. Played a guy near the barbers in Novigrad and he absolutely smashed me.

My tactic is usually using spies to get extra cards, then winning/sacrificing the first round before going full strength for the rest. I can use Foltest to strengthen the siege cards and then if I have commanders horn I can essentially have two rows at double strength.

Also got a card that burns the highest scoring combat card on the opponents deck which is very useful if they've stacked. Need to find some lower spy cards though and start making more use of the decoys.

The worst feeling in a world is when you pass with the opponent is marginally in front thinking you’re being really clever and then they just put like 3 spies down before completing the round.

Agree. I might have a better Nilfgaard deck but I know how to play and win with my Northern Realms deck so I stick with it.

That's what Medic cards are for. 1 medic and 3 decoys and your throwing all those spies back at them.

Yep, I think we must have similar cards. I found a video today which showed where to get some pretty nice cards from merchants (bought and playing) so will likely go find them tonight and play a bit more.

Yeah but doing it the other way round is great. Also good fun if they freeze the combat line so you just whack a load of spies in there.

There's a time when you have to make some tough choices with your deck; e.g. even a 6 card is not that much use if it has no other features (sorry Vesimer but you're cut from my deck). Spies and decoys are essential.

Gaunter O Dim is actually a fairly useful card with the 4 rating as it can call on replicas in the deck and become a 12 rating.

Just beat that innkeeper first try tonight. Felt bad as we both had really shite cards and I basically won by having the less bad ones out.

The one that I had a problem with for a while was the guy in Novigrad selling the statues for the mage's house quest. It was pretty much because I went in undercooked. I swam across the Pontar at level 5 and he was one of the first I took on.

Okay I bought more cards and played a few more games and have to say when you get your deck in order and how to play it you can blitz through most people.

It's lovely. Gwent is what all the 'activities' in other games put together aspire to be.
Agreed. At first i ignored Gwent, and i missed the Gwent quest with the Bloody Baron. I ended up playing it more and more as the game went on and ended up loving it.

My northern realm deck now is pretty perfect. I’m tempted to try the Nilf one though as it has some beasty cards.

What a turnaround!
 I hit one of those mental blocks with gaming where I tried to play a few different ones and just had no motivation. Tried Gwent again and got stuck in and now it's less of a chore and whenever there is an option to play I will!

The two decks are almost equal in terms of strength and abilities, but I do like the Nilfgaardian Archers with the Medic ability, and the Infantry with Bond ability. In terms of leaders, there are pros and cons. Nilfgaard has the "Pick a card from opponents discard pile" leader, while Northern Realms has the "Clear weather effects" leader - both are very good.

Game has an overwhelming amount of things to do doesn't it.

I'm level 21/22 and I've still not even been to Skellige properly. Tells me that the main story mission for that requires me to be level 12

I've been doing a lot of side content and it really is the best of its kind of any game. Haven't properly gotten into the question marks as I know they're mostly quite generic (monster nests, hidden treasure, etc..) but my brain will need to clear them all at some point.

The side content in the Witcher is splendid. Even small quests feel pertinent just due to the quality of atmosphere, voice acting and writing. I've stalled on my 4th playthrough as I'm obsessed with Cyberpunk right now but I do intend to do all the main and side content including DlCs (not trophy hunting completion) when I get back to it

Cyberpunk is next for me. Hopefully once I've finished this (which seems like it will be a while with the expansions) they'll have released that big update for it.

Yeah, if I have any criticisms for the update it would be that they didn't really sort out that levelling imbalance and anything to do with being in the water is still a bit clunky and painful.

Played this for the first time ever for 10 mins with other half. Really fun intro a bit like the TV show, only did a few monster beatdowns to start but does feel a bit clunky - the combat that is.

It's still quite glitchy as well. It wouldn't let me dive in water at one point the other day.

Played for a couple hours and didn't love it, does it take a while to get going?

I think it starts strong, but it really becomes excellent at around 'the bloody Baron' quest, which depending on the pace is probably around 15 hours in the game.

And from there it is the real GOAT of gaming.

NB: If you play the game only for the gameplay/combat, then you won't love it. It has good gameplay but nothing exceptional. However, it has such a good story, characters, world-building, exploration, side-quests, music, lore, so taking it all together, I think it is such an amazing game. From last gen, I loved Nier: Automata, God of War, and Horizon Zero Dawn, but I think The Witcher 3 is comfortably a level or two above them.

Also Gwent, which is a game in itself.

Yeah, the beginning 5 or 6 hours of the game are incredibly slow. If you are still in White Orchard that's like the tutorial section of the game and it really opens up in terms of the world when you get Velen.

Like others have pointed out, combat is nothing to write about. It's all about the story, music and the world.
