Television The Wire

Finally finished watching all 5 seasons of The Wire and now I feel depressed.

The show is epic and whilst I didn't want it to end I guess it had ran it's course on reflection.

Few points:

1) Season 5 was by far the worst. Read somewhere that it was cut by 3/4 episodes so plans changed and was a bit rushed.

2) Marlow was a great baddie. Would have loved to see a showdown between him and Omar. Speaking of which..

3) ..Omar deserved a better end, although I guess it just epitomised life on the streets. The show was very big on you never knowing how or when it might finish for you.

4) Loved how the politics were played out in each faction. Police, Gangs, Public Servants, Dockers.. the way they all mirrored one another just showed how we are all the same as human beings. Quite interesting really.

5) One of the only shows I know not to be centred around one main character. All are of equal importance.

6) Rawls cracked me up. Along with Bunk. Also Clay Sheeeeeeeeet Davis.

2) Marlow was a great baddie. Would have loved to see a showdown between him and Omar. Speaking of which...
I hated Marlo with a passion and was I rooting for Omar to take him down. I couldn't believe it when Kima snitched and allowed Marlo to beat the rap ... This show never did what I expected, which is its greatness.

One of my fav scenes:

"I seen it coming".
"You a businessman, handle it like that, you don't wanna get all gangster wild with it and shit right?"
"They saw yo ghetto ass coming from miles away"

Lester > Everyone else on the show
Ah, I love all of them.

First caught the Wire about eight years ago (still remember Charlie Brooker's article recommending it), and I loved it. It's taken me this long to watch it again in its entirety and love it even more. Surprised how much sticks and the bits of detail I never caught on first time around.

Lester was my fav, but on second viewing Omar and Rawls had some scene stealers. Donut casually driving and getting caught by Officer Walker still tickles me.

the second viewing is the best. I think i spent too much time trying to remember who was who the first time around, too many players. Missed many details.

I might watch the HD version next time.

This is the only show I was willing to give a 2nd viewing. And I enjoyed it as much as the first viewing.

He plays a DEA officer/copper in 25th Hour (great film if anyone hasn't seen it) and gives a Clay Davis-like sheeeet in one of the main scenes.
I loved Carcetti's line in The Wire when someone suggests he get involved with Clay Davis during his election campaign and he replies po-faced "why would I want to get in bed with that grasping motherf***er" - or something like that. Brilliant.

Forgot all about that, great movie it is:

Seems about right, given how massive of a part the Guardian in played in it's growing popularity circa Season 4 premiere.....might as well make everyone re-re-re-rewatch!

He's also the mall manager in The Myst TV series. Not recommending you watch it as it's a shit show.

I could watch highlights of this all night...

I'm probably in a minority here but I think the Wire is overrated. Great show but not contender for GOAT for me.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, no matter how ridiculous it is :D Just kidding...

What shows are contenders for you?

Out of that list, I've seen The Sopranos in its entirety either 3 or 4 times, and Sons of Anarchy seasons 1-5. Sons has some truly great moments (S4 finale is incredible) but falls well short overall, but The Sopranos & The Wire can go pretty much hand in hand for me. I'd probably give the edge to The Wire overall, but James Gandolfini's performance as Tony Soprano is probably the greatest in television history.

I really should watch more TV  Broadwalk Empire looks really good, as does Breaking Bad. Never seen an episode of either.

If I had to pick between the Sopranos and Breaking bad i'd go for the latter, but they are both great shows. There's more of a dichotomy to Bryan Cranston's portrayal of Walter White IMO. Oz is really, really underrated. I really liked the Wire but i never loved it

Boardwalk Empire is fecking great, except for the last season that is total shit.

You watch a lot of TV, I've only watched five of those shows.

No space for Mad Men or Deadwood?

I do watch a lot of tv and I work in the television, film and recording industry. I started Mad men but couldn't get into it at all and I only watched a few episodes of Deadwood but it looked good. So alas. I don't have time for everything.

What the shit?! The Wire not a GOAT contender, but Prison Break is?!

Someone hold me back.

Fourth season alone should disqualify it. I mean, I loved the first season, that was some addictive telly, 2nd was alright. 3rd was pretty gash. 4th is just.........

Do you hate subtlety or something? I see Boardwalk Empire and Breaking Bad is in there, so I don't imagine that's it.

My mind's blown...

Ageing pill definitely rules out OZ, not that it should need any more ruling out compared to the likes of The Wire.

Different strokes for different folks. Like I said, I think the Wire is great but its not one of my absolute favs.
