Television The Wire

Ah Wibble, how I envy you. That's how I felt when I first saw it, right about where you were. I was thinking there really has to be more to this, or at least a faster pace. I now wish I could forget the whole thing and go back to it, the turning point from where it becomes something you have to endure to finish, to something you can't bare to leave, is amazing.

You explained it perfectly. I couldn't really say when the turn happened, but by the time I finished the first season I was all over the second season in a heartbeat!

We have tried starting this and we are really struggling to get into it. I think we have watched 4 or 5 episodes of series 1 and it is very ordinary so far.

Why can't I be a Wire virgin again :(

I used to d/l torrents and watched 3 episodes at once, forcing myself to stop to go to bed. Omar would appear in my dreams, point a shotgun in my face and then I'd wake up. Then watch more episodes.

I deliberately didn't watch it again after I'd finished because it needs to be viewed every 3-5 years, same as the Sopranos. I love you, Sky Atlantic!

I'll keep going. My wife hates wasting time since she has so little of it spare so she quits on boring tv quite quickly. I had to push her to watch the first series of Breaking Bad until it got going and then she was nearly as addicted as me.

I doubt I'll ever get her to watch the Sopranos though because she hates Mafia stuff.

The opening of the Wire with the discussion about Snot is fecking GOATly. Sets the groundwork great.....I never understand how people are bored by it at the start, people say the same about Mad Men too...I don't get it, neither show really drastically changes, maybe it's some ridiculous expectations thing I dunno.

I should re-re-watch someday(actually never re-watched 5, set still sealed and everything, but I really didn't like that season much anyway on weekly viewings), but I just can't be bothered. Dunno why, too much, so little time....be fresher with each day that does pass that I don't restart it.

Just tell her the women of the Sopranos are the best and most diverse women in TV history really, yeah that's right, even more so than the golden girls. They are just as important to the show as the whole Mafiaso thing is......unlike pretty much every other mafia, where they are mostly there to be the wives and mistresses.

Not saying I disagree...but I can't remember the last time a show that that many unlikable female characters.

With the pick of the bunch being Carmella, yes more than Janice and Tony's mom. I fecking hated that bitch, wanted her to be shot up, cut to pieces and then fed to the dogs. Nag...Nag...Nag.

STFU you fecking spoiled, blinkered fecking cow.

I was the same as Wiblets and Hectits, found it quite slow at the start and difficult to get into, but I think by about episode 7 or 8 everything just starts to come together and I remember back to watching that last 4 episodes of the season in one straight viewing. After that I was hooked.

David Simon himself (creator) said it was like a novel, everything builds towards the ending, and it's very true.

Omar comin, yo!

How many episodes do I have to watch before it gets good? I really want to enjoy it but I gave up after five episodes a few weeks back.

I think it's already good at that point but try and see a few more episodes to get the pay off. Every season starts slow and then works towards the final episodes when it all unfolds.

I've been watching it a bit. About 6 eps in to the first series. It's weird how they end without a huge cliff hanger like all other dramas I've been into (Well that's just 24 and Lost really). Like really weird. The credits seem to come out of nowhere.
Enjoying it though.

Yeah, it has a more novelistic nature than most other tv shows.

I fell in love with it from halfway through the first episode, decided to leave it and the Sopranos to watch some other year though. There's so many other great things to watch so what's the rush?

And I love it. Brings so much sense of realism into the series.

My favourite series by far. I remember people telling me about it, and me worrying about it being oversold and being disappointing. Then I started it, and just went through all five seasons at full speed, must have watched it all in less than a month, often watching quite a few episodes through the night (that was during my last year at uni when I had hardly any lectures, so it was great). My favourite is season 4, without doubt, I don't think there's a single bad thing about it.

We're in the process of re-watching them cos my girlfriend hadn't seen them. She likes it and admits it's a brilliant series, but just isn't gripped like I was, I wonder if it's more of a "man's series", I've heard quite a few girls saying they didn't really get into it. Just finished re-watching season 3, so I'm psyched as we'll soon begin my favourite! It's possible that the children theme in this one will appeal to her more actually, we'll see.

I guess Bunk and McNulty getting pissed at bars and the casual infidelity might not be to her liking.

I can't imagine how the people who watched this when it first aired felt, without having the hundred of voices that exist today telling everyone how good it is and to stick with it. Not to mention watching it week by week. If I saw the first 2-3 eps on television way back then without knowing anything about the show, I would have labelled it an average cop drama.

Finished season 1, good shit. It's hard to pin down why I like it. Probably the way things unravel and the insight into that world as well.
Wasn't easy keeping up with all the characters, but was necessary to have that many to make it realistic and more of a spectacle at the end.

Intrigued about how each season focusses on a different aspect and how they're going to link them.

I've just done the same thing. I watched one episode about 18months ago, then left it. About 1 month ago I decided to give it another go, and tonight I've just watched the last episode. I'm gutted it's finished but I can console myself with the fact I'll get to watch it all again with the Mrs. It's genius. And Omar Little, what a character.

Seasons 3 and 4 especially were incredible TV, but they are all good. It's pretty hard to fault.

I'm a bit late here...but feck me sideways that was good.

Was pissing myself at the concept of faking a serial killer throughout the last season, and watching the impact that McNulty had on the whole city. The media, the politicians, the whole police department...brilliant. Not entirely realistic as people on here have already pointed out, but it was still funny as hell. The whole idea of going as far as to capture a homeless guy really tickled me.

Don't know which season I thought was the best. Was devastated when Stringer Bell died, but season 4 was still amazing in spite of that. Extremely impressive how they managed that given the calibre of character they killed off there. To be fair though, everything about the whole series was brilliant - the fact that they don't have to add unnecessary drama, the guts the writers had in terms of killing off characters and the standard maintained afterwards, the quality of acting, etc.... In particular, I was pretty stunned at times by how good an actor the guy who plays Bubbles is.

'kin hell, I don't know what I'm gonna do now that's finished with.

Season 4 is the greatest season of any television show. For me, that's why Season 5 is such a letdown.

Yeah pretty much, I've never seen any season of any other TV show that rivals season four, it is just astonishing.
