The US Democratic Party - The Road to 2026 and 2028

I thought it would be Newsome but with the state California is in added to the fact he’s a “liberal elite” and his ex wife is probably sitting on some interesting stuff, I think there’s zero chance he wins the nomination.

Newsom would be my choice, but the points you make are very valid concerns. I also like Buttigieg a lot but I'm unsure if his sexuality would be an issue - although I like to think that those who would take an exception to it would not vote D in the first place thus making it a non issue.

It’s really something that their takeaway from the last election is that the left wing people are the problem. That shows that they have learned absolutely nothing from this election (whether that is wilful or not) and 2028 is likely to be more of the same.

I really hate to say it but unfortunately the context matters in 2028. I cannot see anyone other than a straight, white, married Christian male having any chance. Any permutation from that unfortunately loses votes from some sections.

That might very well be the case!

You and me both, but it is absurdly important the Dems get it right and win in 28. Whatever it takes.
I honestly don’t think they can. I think Trump and Elon will full on rig it from now on.

That's a huge worry indeed. The first step for the Dems is the midterms next year though, taking back the House and Senate (if at all possible) would go a long way to blunt Trump's agenda his last two years.

Yeah imo it’s a mix of both. There’s that Pod Save American episode with the truly stupid Harris staffers. But also if democrats did learn any lessons then a lot of them would be out of jobs.

I like Buttigieg too. His sexuality will be made out to be an issue, but he can get ahead of that and not make that the forefront of his campaign and political identity. He’ll be painted as the woke DEI candidate by the far right, but if he can focus on his accomplishments and his military service then I’d like to think he has a chance. R’s especially love to “support our troops”!

The drift continues. The Dems will keep losing elections and continue to blame it on "the left" and use that as an excuse to move further right, to the point where they take up the GOP position pre-Trump. We're approaching the point where the democrats start actively praising W Bush's term in office and use that as their baseline.

The US has no viable opposition to a trump led GOP until the Democrat establishment moves aside.

As I’ve said, the slightly lesser of two evils. They have absolutely no intention whatsoever to improve the lives of their voters. At least not those within the leadership circle of the party.
They are basically using the playbook of Labour in UK. Just become a sane republican lite like Labour are sane Tory lite.

Honestly what the feck is happening here, have they completely imploded? I haven’t heard a peep of opposition to anything happening, I know they dont have the power to stop anything but there doesn’t even seem to be any political activity happening.

Interesting.

But are they trying to move even more to the right here?

Patriotism, traditional values, ignore “far left” aka anyone left of Ronald Reagan (Obama said he would have been a Reagan republican).

They say they wanna get away from small donors, meaning working people. So more Wall Street big donations and policy to serve corporations.

I guess at this point the politics of Ronald Reagan would be a miracle!

They haven’t learned anything from Sanders.

They have learned how to destroy any slightly left leaning influences within the party.

I might be wrong, but I think he’s only ever been a Democrat in the context of his runs for POTUS, where you need to represent one of the major parties to win.

I believe so, my impression is that he's an Independent who caucuses with the Dems.

She's in a deep blue urban seat

Her final answer, when told that she supports trans people only till she fears a change in public opinion, is that "you cannot do anything unless you win elections."

i want to do an effortpost on the post-election dems but each day it is so much easier to just post the single worst thing they are up to

Jared Golden has entered the chat:

"It was never going to be easy or painless to overturn decades of free-trade policies that have failed working people, but we have to think in years, not days. If prices go up because of corporate greed or irresponsible government spending, that’s a loss for the American people. But if the price of goods is rising to facilitate the reinvigoration of American production and a transition to an economy that prioritizes domestic goods and markets, that’s a tradeoff we should consider."

GOP lost an all-levels landslide to Obama, with W having the lowest approval numbers in recorded history, and took 6 months to become the bitterest most intransigent opposition party ever. Dems lost to Trump who got under 50% of the vote, with narrow losses in the House and Senate, and are treating him like he's Ronald Reagan in 1984.
