The UEFA Euro Fantasy Draft

Ok I have to go in a while and it looks like Stobzilla isn't coming anytime soon. Anyone willing to take The Stain's picks?

Without considering the picks, Sammer and Desailly have to be swapped around. Sammer had one of the iconic Euro tournaments marauding up to centre forward from his sweeper position. Why maroon him as an orthodox centre half?

Doesn't meet the nationality requirements, but still...

He was voted in the team of the season in both the tournaments he participated in, and Lahm pretty much is one of the best fullbacks in the history of the tournament. His turbo running up and down the flank proved to be vital, and while he was defensively reliable as always, his threat going forward also was excellent and provided one of the best moments in the tournament for Germany in recent years, when he scored that memorable 'Thuram 1998-esque' match winning in the semi final on Euro 2008, helping Germany win 3-2 and progress to the final.

Euro 08 is my favourite International tournament of recent years and I am glad to have another performer who lit up that summer in Austria and Switzerland.

Anyone here for some time? Need to leave The Stain's pick with someone.

Jan-Popluhar.jpg

Ján Popluhár (born August 12, 1935 in Bernolákovo) was a former Slovak football player. He started his football career after high school with RH Brno. However, he is best known for the 15 seasons he spent with ŠK Slovan Bratislava where he made 262 competitive appearances in defence, scoring an impressive 21 goals, and following further stints with Brno and Zbrojovka Brno finished on 306 Slovakian league games and a goalscoring tally of 24.

After finishing his career with Slovan in 1968 he moved to French league side Olympique Lyonnais. Two seasons there were enough, but subsequently he spent five years with Austrian amateur club SK Slovan Vienna as player/coach. Many of the thousands of fans in Vienna thought that Popluhár would be shown up by players twenty years younger than him, but this did not happen. However, at the age of 44 Popluhár realised that his playing career was over.

Slovan coach Leopold Šťastný was famous for creating nicknames for his players, and so Ján Popluhár became known in Slovakian football circles as 'Bimbo'. "I was called this because I always looked, and indeed was, good-natured, and I would never hurt anybody," recalls Slovakia's man of the century and one of football's true gentlemen.

There are not many people who remember Popluhár's action in the 1962 FIFA World Cup in Chile when, instead of turning the situation to his advantage, he brought the referee's attention to the injured Pelé. In 1997 he was awarded the World Fair Play award for this genuine sporting act, and he reflects fondly on his Brazilian memories.

"I met Pelé several times, the first occasion in Chile and then in various international and club games. He was undoubtedly the best, but there were not many one-to-one situations he won and also not many Slovakian players who scored in the famous Maracana stadium. I belong to this lucky group after I scored with a free kick against Brazil in June 1966," remembers this two-footed player and talented header of the ball.

Popluhár was elected Footballer of the Year in the former Czechoslovakia for the first time in 1965 despite the great form of his Czechoslovakian team-mate Josef Masopust. He will never forget the full stadiums and wonderful atmosphere generated at the time. "When I was at my peak, the conditions for a football player were modest here in Czechoslovakia, but the spirit and support of the spectators was incredible. I am not sure that today's players, however, would want to return to my era," he said.

I do believe Bergomi only played rb at the euros
Unless Balu says otherwise of course.
I don't think Bergomi as a right centerback in a back three goes against the spirit of the draft. It's more or less what he played, a defensive fullback, who tucked in all the time. However, Bergomi as a centerback in a back four with a rightback next to him would be a different story.

I thought about picking him in the World Cup draft for days, but didn't in the end. Excellent choice.

Thanks. Really glad he lasted. Bit surprised he did...but I think he may be fairly underrated slightly after reading some if the comments on him in some of tne other draft games.

Agreed, good call. It would be nearly impossible to distinguish the individual roles between those two and the result would be that every player would have to replicate the exact role they played. I.e "he's not a winger in a 4-3-3 he was a winger in a 2-3-5" bla bla.

Sitting here trying to create my combined team of the tournament and it is impossible to create something cohesive if you just pick the best performances for each role.

I.e Xaviesta dominated two tournaments in a row etc etc.

Sammer/Netzer/Zidane/Platini all deserve a team built around them so I am happy that we will get to see plenty of attempts of teams of the tournament as there isn't one that makes sense really.

@crappycraperson

Just the sweeper/libero position which are very similar has Sammer, Beckenbauer, Scirea and Rijkaard. Every one of those four players has a great shout at why they should be the first pick for the position too - as they played it differently and suits different teammates etc.

Förster was a fantastic pick, he was brilliant in the Euro final in 1980.

Paul Gascoigne.
Eugh. My stomach still wrenches every time I think of the 60-second period during which Gary McTokenJock missed his penalty - that would have likely sent Scotland through to a quarter-final date with an underwhelming France - and which culminated with the dyed-blond-haired twat scoring that goal.

satisfies all the rules me thinks.. Xavi won 2 euros and was the main man, simply has to be included for me.

Loving so many teams right now.

Personal favorites atm:
Crappycraperson
EAP/MJJ/Coolredwine
Aldo
Raees/Gio
Theon/NM
bigred123

These are my favorite teams atm, but only time will tel, I can't seem to point out a single "weak" team.
It's great sitting one draft aside and looking on how it goes.

How are people checking if a player played in he Central European International Cup? Their doesn't seem to be any info on the matches anywhere.

Förster was a fantastic pick, he was brilliant in the Euro final in 1980.
Based on EURO performances he should have been picked earlier. Right up there with the best in this draft. Hopefully i can do him justice.

Again, the main problem for me is that Platini is completely wasted here with Xavi and Bozsik.
