The Trump Presidency - Part 2

FBI Agents Involved In Trump Cases ‘Escorted Out’ of Offices in Friday Night Purge

Acting Attorney General James McHenry told the agents their role in investigating Trump was the reason for their dismissals.

“Given your significant role in prosecuting the President, I do not believe that the leadership of the Department can trust you to assist in implementing the President’s agenda faithfully,” McHenry wrote in an email obtained by CNN.

Terminated from their employment because they followed the law, and may not break the law for him now.

The American government is legitimately in crisis.

Who cares, this is what the majority of this country, either by vote or apathy, wanted.

Edit: to be clear, I believe those who chose not to vote are as equally complicit in their own shit situation as those who voted for Trump. If you can’t be bothered to vote for your own well being than feck you.
Genuinely curious. How has your own well being, in Atlanta by the looks of it, been directly impacted. What’s changed in daily life?

Something like 14m voters who voted for Biden couldn't be bothered to vote against Trump this time. His numbers didn't move much in absolute terms.

All these people asked how bad can it be? Well, they're now finding out. It's heartbreaking for people whose loves are already torn asunder by this vicious old man.

Trump just ordered 2 dams opened up in California in an unprecedented move that risks depleting the reservoirs ahead of the dry summer months. And the kicker? The water from the dams doesn't even flow to Los Angeles.

This is Soviet Union level incompetence.

This story is bananas."A team including current and former employees of Musk assumed command of OPM on Jan. 20 ... They have moved sofa beds onto the fifth floor of the agency's headquarters, which contains the director's office and can only be accessed with a security badge or a security escort."

As long as a quorum is established (which in TN is easy since the GOP has a supermajority) then no issues at all other than the opposition would have no seat at the table. Now, in TN that doesn't really matter anyways, but even at the Federal level what would actually be accomplished? As long as a quorum is met then it does not matter if the Senate is only 53 members or the house only has 218 members.
Fair enough. Was thinking more large scale. Whilst it could be passed it would be a civic war (not civil). The threat would surely be enough?

Unfeckingbeleivable.

Not to his followers. The people in his cult believe every thing he says, no matter how monumentally stupid it is.
The US is doomed.Even if/when the Democrats get back into power how do you fix having such a large percentage of your population that believes in stuff like this.

Unfeckingbeleivable.

Someone get Newsom to call Canada and agree to publish an image of Niagara falls with the caption
"Today I signed an agreement with Canada to transport over 2 trillion gallons of water into US waterways A DAY."

It was a problem inherited. Action now being taken to take back control. Will it work? Time will tell
- Really now?

- No.

- Time will reveal the depth of American's society's moral implosion as well as its steady cultural and intellectual decline.

To elect this racist, demented sociopath and pathological liar, twice, is more telling about the country rather than the man itself. The US institutions and the country are probably never going to recover from the blows his second mandate are going to inflict.

Reading your posts makes me almost have a commiserate thought for all the turkeys who resolutely voted for Christmas.

You forgot the category for those who sit smugly an ocean away and happily watch the destruction of a countries civil rights.
Being an ocean away was the justification of many biden voters to vote for genocide and happily watch the literal destruction of a country. All politics are local and all that.

I'm not happy though, for me geography has nothing to do with caring about people.

Absolutely.

Also, nobody can sit smugly or watch happily as the orange lunatic and his appointments including Musk can and most probably will cause untold damage to various other parts of the world as well as the damage they cause to their own country. We're not even a month in and it's a shit show for a dozen other countries already.

He's just got the L.A. Times to lie for him and praise his dam busting decisions and make out it was a heroic and genius move, despite what experts and locals in affected areas are saying. Something just feels more ominous about this time around. Certainly nothing to sit smugly about at all.

Not happy? You literally posted the Drake meme that you either created or sought out. Also, find a single post from anyone on here happily watching what happened in Palestine. Biden was the less shity option in a shity election, and now we all get to see what happens when some chose to allow the worse option to come to fruition.

Not in Atlanta, in NC. Me personally? Not much, I'm a middle class white guy living in the south. Others in my life though?

1. I have a young family member who is non-binary and they are terrified of going to school. The abuse was bad from some of their peers before, but now they is scared that the government is going to come after them.
2. A family member missed their doctors appointment when medicare went down.
3. An LGBTQ work colleague is abruptly leaving the company so he can move to a "friendly" state with his partner. He has no confidence his "tolerant" state will have any interest in protecting his right to be married to the man he loves.

And finally, for all of us:
I was at a food conference this week and there is a massive amount of concern around both labor (with roundups) and safety concerns. There are numerous viral outbreaks in the poultry population and there are worries that both oversight/regulations and avian vaccine stockpiles are going to evaporate (most have expired). Numerous plants have already closed due to repeated e. coli and salmonella outbreaks, but who knows what a deregulated future holds.

That genuinely sounds terrifying. I really hope that bird flu doesn’t become a human borne pandemic, because that would be catastrophic. Far worse than COVID.

Sadly this is the beginning of authoritarianism and dictatorships. I feel people like Trump have seen the actions of Putin and Netenyahu and thought this is the way to run a country.

Now Trump is in the White House and the team around him, I'm certain they are determined to usher in a new era of this kind of rule and other countries will follow suit. The global economy is finished, they know it, so they are getting ahead quickly to turn to authoritarian regime in order to keep hold of power at all costs.

Indeed it would, it would probably be akin to the 1918 flu pandemic or even the plague of the middle ages

One other consequence of bird flu is already here, the price of eggs is skyrocketing and I imagine chicken and related products are not going to be far behind

True but a sizeable minority gets fecked

I’d argue that this era of authoritarianism has been around since sometime last decade.

Yep. And it’d easily spread because, as we learned from COVID, there are far too many people who don’t value public health.

I am not happy at the suffering of americans. I even posted a couple of weeks ago seeing maga cultists getting hurt doesn't make me feel any schadenfreude. I used the word happy because you also used it. It's as ridiculous to assume regular biden voters are happy about what he did in gaza as it is ridiculous to assume I am happy with americans suffering.

It is however entertaining in a depressing way to see that the attitude of biden voters post election is not one of self reflection or fighting fascism, but to be smug online towards minorities or people who abstained.

Surely all these tarrifs especially on two of your neighbours will actually drive prices up for Americans not lower them.

Self reflect on what? On how our party leadership failed us by first re-running a genocidal corpse and then his uninspiring VP? Great, did that self reflection during the election and did not vote for Biden in the primary and then did the best worse thing and voted for Harris. On how the party values align little with mine? On how we now see those feckers will change their "values" to stay in power?

All those things are true, but what I am still waiting to hear is how abstaining from voting, when the likely outcome is a Trump win, is the "moral" choice. Everything that has and will happen was entirely predictable, I mean they literally wrote it down and showed us. Those who abstained, either by laziness or on principle, accomplished nothing more than ushering Trump into the Oval Office. The Dem's will not shift to the left in response, they will, and are, moving right. The liberal wing of American politics is done, at least, for a generation. Trump will pack the Supreme Court with young replacements for Alito and Thomas, he will dismantle the agencies that regulate and oversee industries, and he decimate the social safety net.

But hey, at least they didn't vote for Biden, so #winning.

Interesting video as to why USA are so interested in Greenland. One of the reasons being that 43 of the 50 critical minerals used by USA have been discovered in Greenland. Although mining would be prohibitively expensive as would be building the infrastructure. It would remove reliance on china for some of these key minerals.

Fantastic channel btw, if people haven't come across it before, for geo politics.

Of course they will and they have been told a zillion times

They are about learn the hard way when their grocery and gas bills go up quicker than a whores drawers come down

That's what I was wondering. DOGE isn't a formal department and what is Musk's real status? And do these guys that took over that office have the authority and security clearance for what they have access to now?

Technicalities are boring I suppose, but these sorts of technicalities are what's supposed to stop people from doing this sort of authoritarian stuff. But it seems like the US's technicalities don't mean anything anymore.

And this might still seem small compared to other things that are happening, but this office takeover will enable them to do whatever they want with the US public service - and change its make-up and behaviour for a long time.

It's genuinely scary.

It’s probably very illegal, but that doesn’t matter, as this administration and its members are above the law. If the Watergate scandal happened in this day and age, its perpetrators would get away scot free.
It was the cover up that did Nixon. Same with Clinton, it wasnt the bj in the Oval Office, it was the cover up. So what did Trump learn from that? Don't hide it, so there isn't anything to cover up!

All those things are true, but what I am still waiting to hear is how abstaining from voting, when the likely outcome is a Trump win, is the "moral" choice.
Presumably the people who believe that do not subscribe to consequentialism/utilitarianism as their mode of ethics.

The official White House account on Twitter is now using the account to attack Selena Gomes for her opinions on immigration. There's so much wrong with that and there is 4 mkre years.of it to come.

Such a petty, petty man.

Trade war with Canada is kinda funny ngl
Like what even is the point

I hope Canada threatens to retaliate and Trump backs down. Would be the best case scenario but its a long shot.
MAGA are genuinely insane

It’s not just that, it’s the fact the Canada is facing a 25% tariff whilst China is facing 10%.

What to expect from the Trump regime over the next few days/months/years/decades? Using Putin's takeover of Russia as an example.

"Worse Case Scenario" she sub-titles it, but this was published in November and much of it has already been covered. Section on 'Flooding the Zone with Chaos' is pretty much your explanation for most things in the last few weeks, all those bullet points have been ticked. Its not idiocy/incompetence/racism/revenge, or whatever other excuse the world is trying to give them.

She's also updating a daily tracker covering everything going on that's otherwise difficult to keep track of.

You know, I wouldn’t even put it past Trump to launch an invasion of Canada or Mexico that is similar to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
