The Trump Presidency - Part 2

Technically, he does have the authority which is derived from several legislative acts, like the Trade Expansion Act of 1962 and the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. They allow POTUS to adjust tariffs for national security reasons or during national emergencies.

There’s also precedent for this authority being exercised, as recently as 2018 when Trump imposed tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from various countries, including Canada and Mexico, citing national security concerns. These led to retaliatory measures from the affected countries and were a significant factor in the renegotiation of NAFTA, resulting in the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) in 2020

thanks for the detailed response, appreciated!

This is the kind of policy making he was actually elected for. I find it interesting. So far, he's been proven right in his assessment that soft diplomacy is wasted on China, a position he stood pretty much alone with when he first entered office.

If Trump were simply about aggressive trade and foreign policy and moving manufacturing jobs back to America he'd be a decent, interesting if nothing else, candidate.

Also interesting that he is making these announcements on truth social rather than X. Suck it, Elon.

There's no excess labor to work in these hypothetical manufacturing jobs.

15,000 seems like a made up number
RAND says 11500, two studies by NGOs in the mid 2010s state 14700 & 15500 (Trump used the 15500 figure in a 2017 pair of tweets about banning transgender participation in the military).

Who cares how many will be removed from the military, it's the act of removing any which is so heinous. The amount is inconsequential.

You’re right. At first, 15,000 seemed like a large number, but considering the U.S. military has nearly 3 million personnel, it actually makes sense.

Sounds like great retaliation in theory but surely Mexico's economy would be much harder hit than ours? Mexico's reliance on the US economy is well established, in both trade and direct investment. Plus you're dealing with a population that has inherently less to spend to absorb the potential cost of living increases.

China has been doing a lot in Mexico in recent years, could leave the door open to a degree, albeit they invested there primarily to get access to the US market.

poor Keith if he doesn't end the war in a couple of months Trump will probably throw him under the bus

On it's own cutting out needless stuff from the government isnt bad at all. It's just too bad they will just do it for their own profit.

God knows the Dutch goverment could do with a feckload of trimming. Too bad the people.saying that over here are almost as shit is Trumpers.

What's the needless stuff?
In The Netherlands? Not sure where to even start. The endless amount of freelancers doing nothing projects for ridiculous rates while accomplishing absolutely nothing is staggering. The government apparatus is simply far too large and untransparant to keep track of everything, ehich contractors take advantage of by doing almost nothing so they get paid forever.

I'm not very well versed in the US government, but it doesn't seem like it's the pinnacle of efficiency and I'm sure that on paper, making it more efficient and cutting spending that way is a prudent thing to do.

Having psychos like Elon and Vivek do it however......... sounds like they just want to remove regulations for their own benefit or take over contracts for themselves.

Whilst this isn't inherently untrue, any gigantic beaurocracy will have waste, the problem is not saying "let's remove that waste". Its the mechanism by which you identify waste and cut it without cutting non-waste. Its virtually impossible without spending a lot more than you'd save, which is why waste will always happen. The idea that those two, and I use this word advisedly, morons will achieve this is nonsense. They will cut wildly and with abandon and won't remotely care about the fallout.

Oh yeah, not disagreeing on the morons part.

imagine working a decade or more in a department and find out some rich cnut wants to delete it
Pretty sure that has been on the republican agenda for quite some years. Lots of rich cnuts there . So yeah, it probably has happened in some sense before.
