The Trump Presidency : Part 2

There is quite no literal excuse for what's happening, especially being detained as much as they have been in bad conditions, there is a extra scrutiny right now on illegally working in the country on a ESTA and having everything in line to show you have every intention of returning home, course you could just run into a very bad mood attitude of a CPD officer like I did in Chicago and may take a dislike to you.

Likely thinking of ratings, its gonna be incredible
Not just that - as I mentioned in another thread the very conservative leaning side of the American Catholic Church has been trying to take over the Vatican for years now and has hated the more progressive swing under Francis. Some of it will probably be blatant politicking already in motion.

In fact, it wouldnt surprise me they've been prepping for this for a long time and haven't stopped drooling since Francis death was announced.

Thing is, this has always been the case really when you come into the US you're expected to have a destination, I use to have to give an address where I was staying and a flight to return, it's probably a little heavy scrutinized now moreso back then but this still isn't new
Yep it was always the case that you had to provide an address of where you were staying for the first night, even a couple of decades ago they'd be very suspicious if you didn't have that, they'd often check up on how you were funding your trip as well

I've never been asked where I'm staying or if I have a hotel.

Ever.

What? This is absolutely not true.

Depending in nationalities they xan ask you for a flight back, hotels or a letter of a local inviting you signed and proif that you have an amount of money per day that you will spend per day.

This is an example of what spain was asking to brazilians in 2012 (dont know if still). Border agents may or not enforce it. Brazil applied reciprocity to spanish entering brazil. When i crossed the border from french guyana to brazil they asked me all that and denied me entry to brazil. Was the law. Next day i tried again and the agent didnt enforce it and continued my travels.

So yeah, depending the european country and the law towards other nationalities, specially not afluent countries, they totally can send you back without a detailed plan

Yeah I’m pretty sure if you arrive in Europe with no hotel bookings you’ll be send back as well.

Just have some refundable bookings and cancel them post entry.

Holding them in tragic conditions is not right though

You won't though, it's not a big drama come on. I don't think they even check in the vast majority of cases, and if they do they almost certainly won't send you back unless you're a criminal.

Like I said earlier in the thread I've done this twice in the USA. First time when I was young and didn't know, they just asked me to sort it in the airport quickly but didn't even stop me from entering. Second time I was going to a wedding and staying on a persons couch and only had to give the address (which I didn't know without calling someone but they said don't worry its fine) with no other proof. That was in Trumps first term.

Pointing to rules that you need this stuff doesn't mean they deport people. Obviously, if you come from certain countries the burden of proof is typically higher but those people are well aware of their situation so aren't going to the USA and UK or whatever without getting their shit together.

I think there’s probably a ‘1st world/3rd world’ disconnect here.

You absolutely will get smashed and likely deported if you’re coming to North America, Europe or Australasia without accommodation booked if you’re from the ‘3rd world’. You will have needed it in the first place to even apply for a visa, along with proof of many other aspects of your travel.

Clearly though, in the past we didn’t have the situation where those countries were treating other countries from the ‘1st world’ in this way.

Nor did we ever have people seriously considering or suggesting deleting social media, text or photos (a step I didn’t take even entering China few years ago).

Very odd situation.

Yeah that disconnect has always been there like you say. What's happening now is a level beyond that and more. People can state these rules always existed (and be correct) but seem to be ignoring the fact they were very rarely used in such draconian ways especially between western countries.

3000% tariffs on Cambodian solar panels (yes that is the correct number of zeros). Trump is mental.

How uncompetitive must the US solar panel industry be if you need to put 3000% tariffs on an import to make yourself price comparable?

Someone told me you should unlock your phone with a passcode, not just face id or thumb print. They need a warrant to get you to unlock it if you have a passcode. Correct me if this is wrong.

I would absolutely avoid traveling to the US if you can. If they find an issue, you might end up in detention for weeks like others have.

The question is if refusing to unlock your phone isn't aready enough for them to send you home. But yeah, I considered attending a tradefair in the US this year as well and I sure as hell won't now.

Technically hey need one anyway. But it's harder to hise your face or don't give them your thumb than to refuse typing something.

But the fact that we discuss how you have the best chance to prevent an unlawful search teils us everything we should know about this country right now.

Hope that you have a hotel booked

I visit my brother in Manhattan pretty much every year so shouldn't be an issue.

And make sure to throw your phone in the fires of Mount Doom.

In NYC going through customs now..

Taking photos at TSA is a risky biz! Prepare for the rubber gloves treatment...
Yep. Though it used to be that they wouldnt allow cell phone use in the immigrations hall (which I think is the riskier one rather than when going outbound) at all and now I see people on their phone there all the time now. Not taking pictures mind you. I remember them barking at everyone who would even as much pull their phone out.

The IMF is currently giving a press briefing on its latest forecast on the global economy - they have cut their global economic growth forecasts for 2025, with the US being given the biggest downgrade among advanced economies. They have also just said they now see a 40% chance of a recession in the US following this trade war. Meanwhile, the value of the US dollar is at its lowest level for more than three years and the price of gold just hit a record high.

Is America great again yet, Donald?

Remember "we need to give him time". Just like they would give that courtesy if a Dem were to do pull this shit. /S

The way out looked like that for me last week.

Security took fecking ages.

Always the same shit. They have 50 processing booths but only 5 or 10 working.

Nice to stand in line for an hour after a 10 hour flight.

Ps. Made it through with no issues after more questions than usual.

I'm not sure if the warrant part is true, and I'd imagine they'd just seize your device if you refused to unlock it. However, it's definitely easier for immigration officials to unlock your phone by pointing it at your face, which more or less deprives you of the right to refuse them access to your device. I'd be turning off face/thumb unlock before traveling to the US (although the reality is I don't see myself traveling there at all for the foreseeable future due to all this).

Hopefully the Bethe videos didn't prolong the interview.

Same for south americans. Third world problems I guess.

I remember my American friends being like lets go to Paris next week

Fecker it’ll take me months to sort out the visa

Having a third world passport sucks

How is the experience of U.S. citizens coming back to the U.S. in recent days and weeks? Any noticeable changes?

Drain the swamp...

President Trump’s social media company has moved one step closer to transforming itself into a financial services firm that intends to market investment products, including crypto, to retail investors.
In the deal, Trump Media will partner with Crypto.com, a digital asset trading platform with more than 140 million customers, and Yorkville America Digital, a company with ties to the founders of Yorkville Advisors, an investment firm based in Mountainside, N.J.

Rubio unveils first stage of major State Department overhaul
Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Tuesday rolled out the first stage of a major plan to reorganize the US State Department with changes that will eliminate 132 domestic offices, cut around 700 positions in Washington, DC, and close offices focused on war crimes and global conflict, according to a senior State Department official and documents obtained by CNN.

War crimes, what war crimes?

Also from the article:
The Undersecretary of State for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights is eliminated, as is the Office of Global Criminal Justice and the Bureau of Conflict and Stabilization Operations.

At this point it's only a matter of time before they eliminate departments like Civil Rights at DoJ.
