The Trump Presidency - Part 2

For americans are MAGA voters around you shocked or have a negative opinion of what is happening or is it just an online thing?

NATO is practically dead. EU needs to invest in the hundreds of billions of dollars to build their own local defense industry and end reliance on US manufacturing. If I was Poland and some of the Eastern Baltic states, I would get nukes. Also should be wake up call to Japan, Taiwan and S Korea. I wouldnt count on the US if I were them. And Japan and S Korea need to get nukes yesterday. Particularly Japan.

Powerful stuff. The lack of education in this country, even among the educated about the parallels to what Europe has already seen happen before makes it too easy for people right AND left to discard the seriousness of it all.
He shed tears because he was leaving the Munich Security Conference. It was his farewell speech. The MSC posted this correction on twitter.

Ah well. Hate that you can't trust anything these days. Regardless - to a lot of Germans and Europeans this must feel eerily familiar. I've said on here before I'm happy my grandfather who fought in WW2 is no longer around to see what is happening right now.

Oh look, stupid EU elites assuaging their own egos so they don't have to admit they are US vassals with zero hard power (by their own doing - i.e. not spending what it takes for hard power). Ukraine is gone, its economy is ruined, a generation of young men killed and maimed, and sliding back under Russia’s thumb, like it or not. Germany, France and the UK love chatting about sending troops or fast-tracking NATO membership, but if they’re so fired up, why not just sign a legit security pact already? Talk and tears are cheap!

Unfortunately, I do agree with them.
People on this forum might not understand but having worked with some DFIs and international agencies over the last five years, people won’t believe how much of the money is wasted or outright used fraudulently.

For example, you have a TOR that is made public so people can apply. However, the TOR is designed in such a way that it’s the consultant (who you had already decided will get the job before any process) is the only person/entity that fits the criteria. After the job has been handed out, you find out the company/consultant is a wife or a friend of the deputy high commission or something like that.

Isn’t that corruption?
Instead of stopping the flow of aid, I would suggest fixing the issues.

Unfortunately there is corruption everywhere and with Trump it will get worse exponentially.

Yes time for some deeds. We can‘t rely on the US, that much is clear.

Putin will only respond to a show of force.

The thing to do is to supply Ukraine and have a security force in place.

The orange feckwit is still a god, mostly because he's doing what he said he would do, but the effects of those policies haven't really happened yet for the most part

I think you nailed it. It will end up being a race to get nuclear weapons as a deterrant asap, especially for any country that shares a border with russia. Which is terrible as we don't need more countries going down the nuclear weapons route.

Let's hope common sense prevails.

On Trump's first day in office our (Estonian) PM pretty much just said "I guess we'll have to raise our defense budget to 5% as the US is asking then". We're at 3.3% of GDP currently and have been above 2% since 2015. The defense spending has been the only thing untouched by austerity measures—medicine, education, and social security are taking the hit.

We were among the first to send troops to Iraq and Afghanistan. We've been screaming about the Russian threat for over two decades with Latvia, Lithuania and Poland.

Maybe in the long run, it'll be good for us to rely (and suck up) less on America, but I have little hope that this will be a "wake-up call" for those countries that never cared in the first place. Funny to see us being among the first to be shafted like this, though!

I must admit, when they announced a summit to discuss the US speaking directly to Russia my first thought was how on message it was. There'll be no action apart from what the US decide, although at least Starmer has pretty much admitted as much today.

Second this.

For purposes of this United States Policy, we will consider Countries that use the VAT System, which is far more punitive than a Tariff, to be similar to that of a Tariff.

Let’s take a blind stab at what this deal would look like:
- Russia keeps occupied lands
- Ukraine denuclearised (are agrees some remit to never do so)
- No reparations for Russia to assist with the rebuilding process
- All frozen assets returned
- All trading blocks rescinded

That sound about right?

Rare earth resources are shared equally between Musk and Russia.

Demilitarisation is the main one, those occupied lands will never be secure for Putin while Ukraine holds a million strong standing army with an ever increasing multiple of fpv drones for every Russia troop. Even on the off chance Zelenskyy can be strong armed into accepting such a deal, good luck stopping them electing a General who rips it up.

"a quarrel in a far away country between people of whom we know nothing"

The idea that a majority of Americans have the slightest clue what happens with foreign aid is laughable.
Just seen a survey yesterday. The most Americans think that 10 or more per cent of the tax money goes into foreign aid when it is less than one percent.
And actually not doing that might backfire, too especially if it is health programmes against deseases.

I don't know what's more insulting to history, calling the Democrats Jacobins or calling Trump Napoleon. Also if this is true, then Mexico and Canada are going to gang up on the US and depose Trump.
Their entire ideology is founded on a bedrock of projection. They can and will justify everything as "just doing what the left does". Conservatism is nothing more than a deep mental illness at this point that lives in a self-contained world of conspiracy and hysteria.

fair to say we know the direction of travel for the US, silicon valley, and AI. I hope people are taking my AI & SoMe related comments in various threads a bit more seriously now....

I want people to fight this push.... globally

And that is how ChatGPT will answer when Musk will buy it. Or without buying it, they will provide the information Biased with the algorithms that they see fit

Internet information is a fecking lie. traditional outlets are and internet is no different there is so much to weed out and for that you need a minimum of critical thinking

They should tell Trump he can do that - but any equipment now becomes the property of the countries they are based in.

Comments in that thread are sickening.

Never fails to amuse me how offended the most offensive people get when they’re targeted. The amount for crying about that Tom Hanks sketch is ridiculous.

I mean cmon, it’s alright to be racist towards the Latino population and call women who want abortions whores but how dare someone take the piss out of me and GOD!!!!

Projection is a powerful force.

Stuff like this makes me anxious as well. But Pandora's Box has been opened and it's not going to be closed again and to be fair, in the right hands it has the potential to increase our living standards extremely. It is insanely sad that such a powerful technology won't be used to create wealth for everybody but to manipulate the masses in order to serve the interests of a few. What would be your suggestions on how to approach this?

Their entire ideology is founded on a bedrock of projection. They can and will justify everything as "just doing what the left does". Conservatism is nothing more than a deep mental illness at this point that lives in a self-contained world of conspiracy and hysteria.

IMO, the underlying issue is that social media enables people to stay in their bubble to an extreme and unhealthy amount. Being exposed to and especially building up friendly relationships with people of different opinions is key. It sways opinions much more than people realize. If you connect with that weird conservative uncle during a family event before the inevitable discussion, your arguments are much more likely to go through to him than if you don't. It would probably help enormously if there would be more "intercultural exchange" between conservatives and progressives that isn't politics related. This societal division is what makes it so easy for populists. Unfortunately, I think the progressive political spectrum all around the world doesn't really get this either and villainize right-wing voters when they are actually victims themselves. I think everybody could need a bit more strategic empathy.

Thought that as well already. You can either spend fortunes and fortunes on military or just get yourself some nukes, put a military doctrine like Russia in place and be done with it. It's not as if nuclear warfare is the only existential risk humanity faces like during the cold war era anyway. Maybe in 200 years, historians and scientists around the world will agree that WW3 despite all its atrocities saved human civilization in the long run.
