The Transfer Deadline Day Thread / Most crazy ever?

I don't think a lot will happen. After Moyes' Fergie impression today I imagine there was no value in the market and the right player wasn't available.

If the Arsenal sign Ozil, fair play to them for holding out for a top player rather than going for the first name out of the hat.

If they manage to land Ozil they are fecking lucky that Spurs sold Bale to Real in teh first place for all of it to happen.

Hopefully we stop being so fecking tight for just one day.

Even Arsenal, Arsenal, are now willing to pay over the odds. It's just the way it is these days. The club is loaded with money due to on-pitch winnings, TV money, a never-ending list of sponsors, the Nike deal is going to renewed soon, isn't it? That'll probably be huge.

Go out and buy a couple of midfielders with some of that cash and stop squirreling it away.

Tomorrow night.

It seems the 'in' thing at the moment is to bring up a bunch of obvious wum twitter and facebook accounts/statuses and argue fervently that it represents the match-day and upper echelons of the knowledgeable fan base.

Really bizarre stuff.

"WELCOME TO MANCHESTER UNITED" spammed across youtube videos, before the player has signed. I fecking hate modern fans.

If arsenal sign Ozil it's going to fecking depressing. He's an incredible player, too good to miss out on.

Woody better look like he has had undergone serious sleep deprivation. If he looks like he just got back from a spa, I will be eternally pissed off with him.

I'll be pretty gutted if Arsenal do sign Ozil - he'd be a great signing for most teams but they would surely guarantee their top 4 place by signing him. Would love to have him at United.

Not looking forward to these final hours of the window; even though it's likely we'll sign at least someone, there is more than a remote possibility that we won't sign anyone.

Apparently it's a done deal. Pure stupidity from us, can't quite understand what the feck were upto.

This isn't going to be an exciting Deadline Day for us, it's going to be mind numbingly predictable. We're going to sign the mediocre duo of Fellaini and Baines, which wouldn't have been anywhere near as disappointing had we not pissed around and just signed them during the pre-season period. At least we'd have been better prepared for the start of the season.

I don't see any cause for excitement with these two. I've said all along that Baines is a totally pointless buy. Evra was good last season and has been one of our most impressive performers again this season. Fellaini's just underwhelming. We're one of the biggest clubs around and we haven't bought a CM for six years; when we finally do move, it's for an anti-footballer.

Depressing stuff.

We should make a 35M bid each for Fabregas and Herrara and be done with it.

Get a grip people. Agreed Ozil is world class player, but there must be some reason if we are not going in full force after him. We all know that if Moyes thought he was the kind of player we are missing the most, salary wouldn't have been issue, especially if we are competing with Arsenal for that.

This reminds me of SAF's line from one of his intial interview after joining: "The most important thing in managment is taking decisions that aren't popular, but you take them, because you know you are right and I think I can do that."

I trust Moyes to know what he is doing. Given the young talent we have in club from flair and creativity point of view, and given we have Kagawa and Rooney to play in hole behind RvP, Ozil is not our pressing need. Going by just yesterday's match is not correct as we were missing key creative players. I am assuming he is planning to bring up creative players from academy and wants to sort out the CM that is finding a perfect partner for Carrick who will help in ball retaining and linking play with forwards.

Just take a deep breath, relax, keep calm and enjoy the frentic day. If we get couple of good players it is awesome.. otherwise, it is not end of the world as we still have a good squad overall.

Get out this thread far too much sense spoken in this post!

No one said it's the end of the world but us not going for a brilliant footballer who I've admired for a long time who is available is hugely disappointing. We do lack creativity and technical genius and he provides that in abundance.

I don't trust jack shit, I simply want my fecking marquee signing!!

The thing with Ozil is that, where would we actually fit him in the scheme of things? And before someone puts me down with the RvP example, I don't think its the same situation. If we play him on the wings, we would be wasting him. And we already have Kagawa and Rooney for the No 10 role. So where does he slots in our formation?

The argument of those 'for Ozil' is: He is too good a player to turn down. The expectation is, buy him and sort out how to fit him later. I agree he is world class and will be best creative player in league probably, but we should make decisions based on our pressing needs not based on available players. Anyway, let us see what finally happens over next 12-14 hours or so.

Get Ozil this summer. Sell Rooney next. Sorted :)

But seriously, why pigeon hole players ? Doesn't kagawa play on the left for japan?

I don't really Japan play, but is he good enough for them?

Also, it's like once in a while that he plays for the country. He made his name playing through the middle for Dortmund. Shouldn't we be using him that way itself.

Just to nit-pick, Fergie played him on the right of a diamond against Newcastle in one of the matches last season, and he was quite good in that as well (but we still did not use his complete skill set). Doesn't mean we should use him again like that.

Rooney finally found his supposed perfect position right up top but we moved him deeper to make way for Rvp. It's okay to play players in positions they're not best at if you're playing a better player in his favorite position to make way. Basically what I'm saying is it's okay if kagawa doesn't play in his idea, position because Ozil more than makes up for that.

A ridiculously cut-throat attitude there amol. Jesus.

To be fair, I'm not much of a transfer muppet and I don't get excited by any of these sagas. I make an exception for Ozil though!

Rooney was playing behind Hernandez as well during the 2010-11 season. So it's not as if we suddenly made adjustments and shifted Rooney deeper. Plus Welbeck was also shifted out wide on the left to have RvP in the team. Not that I am contesting it, but just saying that the players should ideally play in their best positions, or at least use their skill sets to the max for the benefit of the team.

Also, how do you accommodate both Kagawa and Ozil in the team alongwith Nani, Zaha, Valencia, Young (listed in the order of their importance :p).

This will just leave us with lot of unhappy players on hand, moaning about transfers because of lack of game time and lacking morale. Having 2 players for a position is OK but putting a player in unfavourable position to accomodate other is not. With Rooney it is different because he can be good both alone upfront and in hole, can't work with everyone. The best option would have been to sell Kagawa if we had to buy Ozil.

My point is even-though I like the fact that RVP plays for us, we didn't really need a striker signing last signing, but we've bought him as hes come up in the market and we moved a player ( who's been pretty alright in doing the job) to another position rather than signing a CM. Just one season in and you think its ok to move Kagawa to a position he doesn't normally play to accommodate a slightly better player rather than signing a CM again! Your post sort of alludes to a 'the newest player matters' irrespective of whether we actually need a player in that position.

I'm off to work to check Twitter all day. I won't be able to concentrate to do any work. See you on the other side, good luck everyone.

I don't think it's necessarily an unfavorable position. Players like Ozil and kagawa can play out wide if you play a slightly more flexible style. Hazard prefers to play as a number 10, he plays out wide for Chelsea. Same with Carzola. But they drift inside, it's what teams do these days. And it results in a lot more playmakers and creative players in the team. We're different, we play with a lot of space between players trying to stretch play, hence expel have these extremely fixed notions about players and positions. Kagawa out wide in united as of last season doesn't work I agree. But kagawa other wide in united of early 2011 12 (I think it was?) season does, and very well I reckon. And personally I'd like to see that shift.

Like I said, Ozil is a player I really really like. I make an exception for him when I say all of this.

If he signs for us, I'll run naked through the streets of Delhi.

Fully expect United/PSG/even Bayern to hijack this.

I mean I sort of want Ozil here too and somehow find a way to play three number 10's behind Van Persie and try to make it work but we'll see.

Some reason I feel like United are going snap him up in the last minute and then the butt-hurt will commence! :D
