The Third Redcafe Sheep Draft

Now, does anyone have the balls to go after a potentially unpicked GOAT?

Holy shit really? Lovely!

I wouldn't be that surprised if a big 'un or two actually end up going unpicked here. It's the nationality thing again. Some who passed will undoubtedly have gambled on certain players - but others will almost certainly have been playing it more safe.

Pleased, at any rate. Perfect round would've seen one more heavy hitter blocked, but this is alright.
I hope so, Lucky Luke.

The more I think about it, the more I get annoyed.

I wouldn't beat myself up until the full list is revealed. I can think of three, maybe four players I could have gambled on here with a realistic chance of landing 'em. But those names could very easily be among the ones picked by the others who passed. Beyond those, it would have been a sheer lottery.

At the end of the day, though, it's mostly about making it interesting for yourself - there aren't that many of the GOAT-ish players available in this round I'd want to, say, build a team around. Not because they're lacking in any way as footballers - but because they're lacking in terms of novelty value for me personally.

I'm going left field in this one - had to after that Pelé debacle.

That said, who knows if we even get to keep the players we draft...

I fondly remember the meltdowns last time round.

I wouldn't mind it if @Gio introduced this round at some point in the future, to be honest. I wouldn't mind some of the mix-ups that would occur.

Joga Bonito, Tuppet, Invictus/KM, Sjor Bepo and Marty 1968/bleezy - Your next pick must be from Hungary

great, didnt know about this rule:lol: tuppet i hate you even more....

Are the real GOAT's like Maradona, Messi and Pele Etc. Slightly underrated in drafts?

Like, in the 40's draft, whilst it is pretty much accepted Pele would feck shit up in the final, for some reason there was almost zero talk about his impact on the game. In fact, it was almost as if the game was being played without him actually playing being taken into account. It seems to happen a bit in games where their impact is a formality and they don't sway the result or the direction of the game as much as they should.

It is, as @antohan would say, a tactic to detract the focus on those GOAT's and put greater focus on other players. In the recent final, @Joga Bonito did a great job taking the shift away from Pele and putting it on Anczok, Ball, and the midfield battle. Pele + Gerd Muller is insane in itself, but Joga did a great job in making that unnoticeable.

Yeah I think Pele was a little under-rated - he got knocked out twice(?).

I know, its what I thought. The best guy on the pitch in every single match up and he seemed to get ignored every single round.

@mazhar13 I understand the tactic from an opponents point of view. What I don't understand is the lack of explanation from the person with the player and the neutral in the discussion.

You just get tired sometimes arguing with certain people about certain things.

Again, it goes back to what the focus is on. Joga focused on Ball and Carlos Alberto vs. Anczok. He also focused on Gerson + Clodoaldo vs. Ball, Wimmer, and Netzer. Those two key arguments forced Gio to go on the defensive about Anczok, Gerson, and Clodoaldo, and it made him retaliate by focusing on Joga's own weak points. Plus, the fact that Pele and Gerd Muller are GOAT's meant that he took them for granted when he probably should have focused more on them.

Pick sent, I think all of the managers with failed picks are online, let's get it done early.

There's not much you can do, really, other than pointing out that he's - you know - him.

I think part of the problem for both me and Gio/Theon was that we had him starring in something very much like his familiar '70 role. And that role has been discussed to death on here - there's not much to be said beyond: "Yeah, he's playing the '70 role - you know, bringing it all together and whatnot. Plus, he can score goals - and that. And - oh yeah - he's like the best player ever. Sort of."

It becomes some sort of bizarre negative, almost - in the sense that if you don't get people on board with the idea, there isn't all that much you can do to argue effectively for it. There isn't anything very intelligent to say about it - whereas you can come up with all manner of intricate arguments in favour of something (or someone) more obscure and less dissected.

It's like defending Shakespeare or Mozart against some other brilliant, but not quite so over-praised and discussed artist. Difficult.

That's at least 8 big names gone tho.

Tomorrow will be very interesting to see who those are. At least Puskas didn't go through.
Oh dear, I should have gone with my original first choice.
