The Tennis Thread

Well I thought there would be more people in this thread considering Murray was playing :(

Well it's raining and the match is interrupted for anyone who cares

Well the first set was a mental set.

Murray broke twice for a 3-0 lead before Fed broke back once to get back to 3-2.

Then it was on serve until 5-4 when Murray was serving for it and, not surprisingly, choked.

But then Federer outchoked Murray and gave another chance to serve it out for 7-5.

Murray then comfortably served it out.

The service game from Fed at 5-5 was bizarre. Some of the weirdest shot selections.

overall Murray has played well enough, his powerful backhand has really caused Fed tons of problems.

Fed has played like he always does nowadays, struggle towards the end of sets and make tons and tons of stupid errors.

Good stuff from both players and smiles all around as Murray points to the sky and says something along the lines of Where I come from, this isn't rain", before Federer responds, "Where I come from, it is."

Altast Murray wins. First time he's beaten Fed in a final. Sadly I can see Murray winning the USO this year especially with Del Po out as well.

Murray's celebrating like he's won a Slam

Murray's 5th Masters now...ALL on hard courts. Nadal in his early days (and even now by some retards) used to be considered as a one surface wonder, I wonder what that makes Murray? Rubbish on clay, average on Grass but very good on the hard courts.

Posts in this thread. He really is talking to himself, poor lad.

Is it any wonder he's talking to himself with bitter filled posts like this one.

As Rednome pointed out, this is needlessly bitter.

Murray won the tournament beating Federer and Nadal - two of the greatest of all time - and yet you still find a way to slate him?

wr8 - for future reference, we don't need a point by point broadcast of whats happening in each tournament.

Well he does need to prove himself on the slam stage. I actually have him as a favorite for the Tournament. And no where have I slated his performance. He was brilliant in the tournament and thoroughly deserved to win it. When it comes to the Masters Series in America, he's proven himself to be the best over the last 2 years.
What I was saying is that he needs to get better across all surfaces if he wants to go down as a great player and merely a good player

Sorry mate.

I'd thought there might be more people commenting on a final. I'll keep it in mind next time :)

I thought Roger played better this week than he has in a while so perhaps Annacone is helping him already. I think he will be a favourite for the US Open as it is harder to beat him over 5 sets than 3 usually. He showed glimpses of the Roger of old today and I don't think he is done yet. Hope he gets at least a couple more slams before he retires.

Surely even Murray detractors have to give him some credit here. In what's been a tough year, he's just lost his coach and he's went and beat a Nalbandian on fire, Nadal in the semi and Federer in the final. How many players have beaten Nadal and Federer in the same tournament?

Top stuff from Murray and i hope he can carry this form in the US and get that monkey off his back.

I thought he was quite poor. Sure he reached the final but he really should have lost against Berdych, and if Djoko was not the choker that he is, even he would have taken one of the many chances he had to break in the final set.

Fed has played some sublime tennis at times but he just hits far too many unforced errors now. I won't be surprised to see him exit at the Quarter/Semi stage again if he comes up against a hard hitter like Berdych

Quite a few actually recently. Off the top of my head, Davydenko and Del Po have done it in the last 11 months itself. And now Murray.

I think Murray is the favorite for the USO. Nadal needs a good draw. But with Fed not in his half probably things don't look great. Djoko/Murray usually get the better of him on hard courts.

Murray wins it in the tie break. He did well to come through there but Gulbis really messed it up. He just hits far far too many unforced errors to be considered a major force despite having talent.

I think he'll be a hard hitter similar to the likes of Berdych but an even less successful version.

And after yet another horrendous set of tennis, Nadal loses it 7-5 against Beneteau.

Even if he wins this match, he's looked absolutely shocking since the American Hardcourt season started and he'll get eaten up by Berdych in the quarters.

Imo Fed, Murray, Djokovich, Berdych all have a better chance at the US Open than him, he cant keep playing the rubbish he's playing right now and hope to advance at the USO. He keeps slicing the ball back all the time and is playing really poor and defensive tennis.

Does anyone know if the Flushing Meadows courts are as fast as Cincinati?

PS: Nadal breaks early in the 2nd set only to get broken back immediately. Absolutely shocking serving again

Nadal takes the 2nd set 7-6 after saving a match point in the tie break. Not convincing stuff at all. Surprising he struggled so much in this set despite Benneteau serving at just 45% and serving 8 double faults.

The commentator is right, "Nadal loses his aura of invincibility when he steps on a hard court"

PS: Baghdatis leading Berdych by 1 set and a break

Strange tournament this. Murray has struggled in both his match,Berdych could be going out, Nadal has struggled. Players really seem to be struggling to adapt to the considerably faster Cincinnati surface.

So Roddick got past Soderling and now plays Djokovic. Should be a great game.

And Federer has made it to the quarters without finishing a single set of tennis in the tournament

Shocking bottling job by Fish in the tie break vs Murray. Had 2 set points and wasted both. He could not get one shot in. Simple shots, shot after shot, he just kept hitting long.

But at 7-7 when Murray was serving, his first serve was a let. Then he served again. Into the net. So a First fault. Then he served again and the rally started and a Fish shot was called long but Fish successfully challenged. The Murray served again. Another let. Then he served again and another fault. But this was the second fault. So it should be a double fault right? However nothing was given and he served again  Then he won that point and then the set but did the challenge erase his first fault? Surely that's not possible?

I feel for Murray though. He's having to play every game in the morning heat, it's really quite difficult. Surely they can give him an evening slot for a game? He's struggled in all 3 matches till now. Can't decide who a clear favorite is going to be for the USO

Fish took the 2nd set 6-1

I had said it on the first page and I'll say it again, if he can cut out his errors I can really see him getting far in this tournament. Been in great form for quite a while now.

Mardy Fish :D

7-6 in the decider. Great match, the best American player right now!

Murray needs to improve his on court behavior when not winning. It's understandable to get frustrated but the volley of abuses and general poor attitude won't really win him too many fans.

Roddick wins the first set 6-4 vs Djoko.

PS: Serving for the match at 5-4 in the second and he gets broken. WIll another Andy bottle it?

Yeh he requested one, and I suspect he moaned about it afterwards

It's probably for the best that he lost today, he wasn't going to win the tournament, so best to be able to rest up

Foot injury rules Serena Williams out of US Open

x2_24f9958

World number one Serena Williams will miss this year's US Open after failing to recover from a foot injury.

Williams, 28, has already missed three tournaments since cutting her right foot on broken glass in Munich in July.

"It is with much frustration and deep sadness that I am having to pull out of the US Open. My doctors have advised against my playing," the American said.

Williams said missing the tournament at Flushing Meadows was "one of the most devastating moments of my career".

Williams suffered the injury shortly after winning her fourth Wimbledon singles title on 3 July.

It was before playing in an exhibition against Kim Clijsters in Belgium on 8 July, an event which drew a world record crowd for a tennis match of 35,681.

She underwent surgery in Los Angeles on 15 July but will now miss her first Grand Slam since Wimbledon in 2006.

She has played just six tournaments this year, including the other three Grand Slams.

Her wins in Australia and at Wimbledon took her career record to 13 Grand Slam titles.

Last year, she lost in the semi-finals off the US Open after a furious outburst at a line judge over a foot-fault call in her defeat by eventual champion Clijsters.

"Serena will be missed, but the tournament is about the competition and the players on the court," said a statement from the tournament organisers.

"This year's US Open will be a memorable event, as it has been every year."

Nadal lost to Baghdatis in the quarters. Not at all surprised by that. He's been absolutely garbage in all his matches till now. He's not getting past the semis at the USO. On this form even the semis will be hard for him.

Fish just got served in the final by Federer. 6-7 7-6 6-4.

Was a fairly poor final and tournament in general in terms of tennis quality.

Murray, Nadal were poor and the overall standard of tennis was quite poor imo.

This is one of the easier Masters series Fed has won. Did not even have to play a set of tennis until the quarters and then Davy, Baghdatis did not put up much fight and Fish did decently in the final but failed to take his chances.

Fed just does not look like the Fed of old. Even though he won the match today there were so many errors in his game it was hard to believe one was watching Fed.

Murray is yet my favorite for the USO followed by Federer and then maybe Nadal and Berdych.

Not a bad performance then by Fish to at least take a set of Fed, think all the big names were a tad tired from last weeks effort, they'll be pumped for the Major.
