What I dont get is, when the chuck the ball to their colleague but somehow they either drop it or get 'tackled' the same team get to kick off again...am i missing something?

every team has four chances to advance ten yards, if they accomplish that task, they have another four chances

if they don't they have to give the ball to the other team

You have to move the ball 10 yards forward every four plays or else you lose the ball. Typically they kick the ball away on the fourth play rather than just let the other team have it where it is.

The Lakers need their star pitcher to hit a slam dunk from second base in the fifth quarter to win the Stanley Cup, or else they don't get to face their arch rivals the Dallas Indians in the play offs?
