Television The Sopranos

Told him I went over for a blowjob.

The Wire is second for me.. partly for that derp last season in fairness, but overall I have found myself returning to the Sopranos more often
Season 5 got better on repeat viewing, it was just a victim of the ridiculously high standards the show set for itself.

There's not much between the two of them, I can fully understand why someone would put Sopranos top and The Wire second, but I think there's then a gap to the best of the rest.

God, I love Sopranos, it had a nice blend of entertainment and grit but The Wire is fecking amazingly written apart from one or two personal pet hates. Even season 2 in the Wire is a masterpiece. I'd go on to say it's as good as any other seasons.

I've recently gone back and watched both (not for the first time). I think the Sopranos is slightly more rewarding to go through again. It's a deeper show in many ways, especially in terms of character development, the acting is generally of a higher standard, and there are individual episodes that take your breath away.

The Wire unfolds in a different way, its seasons are more cohesive thematically but individual episode standouts are rare because of this. It's more ambitious than The Sopranos in what it wants to say about America, and it takes more risks with its plots which mostly pay off (serial killer excepted).

I don't think one is better than the other, The Sopranos is an examination of the American psych, The Wire of American society. Taken together they are an incredible portrait of that country.

2nd time I'm agreeing with you today.

The show was ahead of its time. Didn't think I would enjoy it as much as I did

I've never seen a show that makes you feel as if you know the characters as much as The Sopranos, and I've never seen a show with such great storytelling as The Wire. I prefer The Sopranos because i find the life they portray more interesting, but both are miles ahead of anything else.

Nice take, been thinking about rewatching the series soon - don't think my wife has ever seen it either

I'm watching it the 2nd time on the TV now in HD. Just fantastic. Such great TV

I find myself watching Sopranos clips on Youtube quite regularly.

Currently on season 4 of the wire, will watch this after I finish it. Really enjoying the wire so if this is better I'm really looking forward to it.

Always rated the wire slightly higher.

Love this scene, Junior and Tony talking about Jackie Junior at his funeral:

Tony: "Sad day."

Junior: "Uh hmm...kid was always a dumb feck though, wasn't he? Didn't he almost drown in three inches of water?"

Tony (nodding along): "The penguin exhibit...Jack tried to lay off all Jackie's problems on a learning disorder, but...well stupidity would be a learning disorder wouldn't it?"

Sopranos anticipated some of the reasons for Trump's popularity in the first scene of its first episode which aired back in 1999:

Tony: "It's good to be in something from the ground floor. I came too late for that, I know. But lately, I'm getting the feeling that I came in at the end. The best is over."

Melfi: "Many Americans I think feel that way."

Tony: "I think about my father. He never reached the heights like me. But in a lot of ways he had it better, he had his people, they had their standards, they had pride. Today what have we got?"

I'm currently on S2 Ep 4 and I can't say I'm really enjoying this! I would say it is just about good enough for me to keep watching.. just. It just feels like one big coca-cola endorsement.

Does it pick up or am I at a point where if I'm not loving it by now then I won't at all?

Well personally I put The Wire above it, but that's the only one.

I have The Wire and Breaking Bad equal top with Sopranos back in the pack a bit. Great show but almost every character was unlikable which made me care less.

For me seasons 3-5 are peak Sopranos, but Season 2 finishes with a couple of amazing episodes, and has some other great moments in its second half. Then again it's my favorite show out of all of them so obviously I'd urge you to stick with it...

Have you watched Game Of Thrones?

Just started watching it again. The writing and acting is some of the best.

The show has really everything.
