ps. just realised that the fat son of Frank Sobotka in "The Deuce", is actually James Gandolfini's kid. Not a very good actor, is he?
I hope he is decent in Saints of Newark. Gonna definitely watch that after my current Sopranos re-run.
The Russian guy who ran away from Paulie/Chris also never turned up again.Just finished watch The Sopranos for the first time. My god what a show. Does anyone else feel that there was a lot of surprising storylines that never really had a conclusion? Like when Tony and Bobby had a fight? I thought that was going to have a major impact on the rest of the series but it was never mentioned again. A lot of stories seemed to just happen but never gets spoken about again nor had they and real long term impact on the show. Maybe that’s the brilliance of it.
He went back to his decorating job.The Russian guy who ran away from Paulie/Chris also never turned up again.
I hope he improved, his house looked like shit!He went back to his decorating job.

Finally done watching.
Good series. I mostly enjoyed it, even though I found it hard to sympathize with 90% of the named characters.
That being said I have no idea why this still is considered one of the greatest TV series of all time. I just don't see what makes it so special. I can understand the hype in the early 2000's since there weren't that many good TV dramas, but so much good stuff has come out since.
The highlight for me was watching my wife gradually lose her mind over how all those unattractive men had such fine women "So unrealistic! How dare the ugly bastard treat HER like that! Is this why this show is so popular among middle-aged men? Is Tony a power fantasy that they can relate to because of his looks?"
Finally done watching.

What shows since would you say are better?

I think what makes this elevated above the rest (for me at least) is that this show doesn’t feel at any point like people acting. These people live these characters, Gandolfini especially. And it’s these little nuances all of them have that really bring it to life. It probably has more lows than some of the other shows (mostly early on with dubbing issues, Liv CGI, people playing two characters) but for me it’s still the best.Sticking to just TV dramas: The Wire, Breaking Bad, Mr. Robot, Succession... I think all of these have far better writing etc. I could also name a bunch more, although that has more to do with personal preference.

It's always hard to compare shows directly since they're all trying to do their own thing.Sticking to just TV dramas: The Wire, Breaking Bad, Mr. Robot, Succession... I don't think you're supposed to sympathize with 90% of the characters, afterall, they're made men. If Chase wrote them as sympathetic it'd be glamorising mob life; instead, he's brutally presents them for what they are, and that's unsympathetic mobsters who choose the life.
I get that, but it gets a bit tiresome to watch a group of sociopaths for 6 seasons. Damn near every character is a form of villain with few redeeming qualities. If they had been charming, funny, interesting or cool then it would have made the viewing experience more enjoyable.
I'm a soft bastard when it comes to film and TV and tear up very easily. When things get dark or sad on screen it almost always affects me. Yet for some reason I couldn't care deeply about any of the characters. Adrianna is the one exception. The character herself is a charisma vacuum, but I felt so sorry for her and how things ended up. Vito I could also sympathize with, but his side story was also relatively short.
The acting is top notch though. The few times a got a little teared up it was 100% because of excellent acting. The best example being when Tony "confronts" Junior about his dementia.
They're not even that sociopathic compared to some other shows. On my rewatch last year I remember saying I had forgotten how funny it is at times as well.
Something like Gomorrah was unwatchable for me because I felt that one was purely just a load of scumbags all just killing and being serious all the time. You need humour to balance it out.
