With International Day and another round of World Cup qualifiers tomorrow, I thought I'd take a look at the player-run teams and see how they're doing.
In Group 1, MrAnderson's Spain have decent competition in Paraguay and Switzerland, but so far he's navigated well, only drawing once in 5 games so far. Switzerland, though, have 9 points and have only played four games, so they have a chance to pip Spain for top of the group if they falter. Paraguay, with 7 points, are quite the long shot to catch Spain from 6 points back with only 3 games remaining.
Adam118's Germany top group 5, but it's nervy going for Die Mannschaft, as they've only got 10 points to their credit, while the Czech Republic and Cyprus have 9 and 8. It could be disastrous if they drop points to Cyprus in today's qualifier.
Newbie Xipro's Chile have had a calamitous campaign in group 6. Their three-nil win against Canada provided the only points they've had in five matches, and La Roja are already all but eliminated. To make the finals, Chile would need to win all their remaining qualifiers, would need Italy not to manage even a single draw in their remaining qualifiers, AND they would need to somehow make up a 13 difference in goals. It seems likely that Chile will be watching the World Cup from home, this summer.
Urbanned's Netherlands are fighting from behind to qualify out of group 7 behind a lucky Hungarian squad (10 points in 5 games despite a -1 goal difference) and a rather surprising USA. Klinsmann apparently knows quite well what he's doing in SM-world. While not having Landon Donovan in the squad once, the Americans have 3 wins and a draw against the Dutch, and a game in hand versus the group. Holland have 9 points, one behind the group toppers.
In Group 8, the fans and tabloids were both chomping at the bit after England's successive draws against Denmark and Jamaica, but consecutive three-nil wins against Wales and Finland have calmed the masses, and my England side sit comfortably atop thee group with 11 points, the Finns five points back in second. Some slacking off will be inevitable (this is England, after all,) and I expect I'll drop points somewhere, but I think it's clear I've put the team's success first. Ferdinand plays alongside Terry, Gerrard plays in his best position behind the main striker, and Carrick anchors the midfield. Martin Kelly, Jordan Henderson and Stewart Downing are nowhere to be seen. I'm England's best manager in a generation.
Maniak's Portugal sit comfortably atop group 9, five points ahead of second place Senegal and eight ahead of third place Tunisia.
In group 16, Big Red's Ireland have made the best of a relatively weak group, winning four of five. They'd be Henry-proof if they hadn't lost their last match to South Africa. as it is, though, Turkey and South Africa both sit 3 points behind the Oirish, and are still in the hunt.
