Cardiff City: A New Dawn 2025

As some of you know by now I like to do little team write ups from time to time. So here’s a bit of an update on Cardiff and a rationale behind the squad which you’ll notice I’ve been busy changing significantly.

The First XI

The first XI are the best current players I believe in their natural positions for the club. One thing you may now notice is that there is now only one 30+ year old in the side Neuer, who is signing an additional year contract in real life giving me time to sort his position out. The rest are all under 30 and many are entering peak ages or currently in their peaks.

In defence we have a solid experienced back line with Zabarnyi (one of my earliest buys) close to hitting 90 now. Data and scouting reports(and I’m not spoiling my sources here) suggest he is amongst the best young CBs in the PL and in the top 5 leagues in terms of experience and defensive performance for his age so I can see a big club moving for him very soon.

In midfield we’ve had a major overhaul, Tchouameni was sold along with Hato and Mbeumo to bring in Endrick, Palhinha and Ferguson. Tchouameni was an acceptable loss because he was increasingly being used as a CB by Ancelloti but Hato left me scouting hard for left footed CB/LBs. Mbeumo I knew was on the cusp of a 91+ rating so was gutted to lose him, but Kubo softens that. Anyway back to midfield the Tchouameni loss kind of forced me to get in another top CM and Barella is probably my favourite CM certainly in Serie A (even over my beloved Koopmeiners who I still regret selling for Antony *shudders*). I’ve also brought Pellegrini back to Cardiff (he originally arrived with Neuer in exchange for Kepa and is probably the best deal I’ve made in this GW).

In attack we have Pino, Kubo and the golden boy Endrick who I still believe is going to be 95+ in the next 5 years tops. Pino was a risky signing coming back from injury but he’s been solid since his return and I love Kubo (who scored a lovely goal last night too!).

I’ve made a significant sacrifice in terms of ratings to this First XI to bring in the likes of Kubo but the arrival of Hernandez meant Shaw wasn’t vital to me and at 33 soon to be 34 in March while Griezmann was my favourite player in real life of my squad, I couldn’t justify holding him unless I was ready to challenge for titles. So Ben Seghir and Hinshelwood are more than adequate youth prospects with hopefully very bright futures ahead of them.

The U21 Best XI

Probably the happiest I’ve been with my youth set up the entire time I’ve played in the Redcafe league. There are so many players who have high potential that I wasn’t sure how to discuss the youth. So I settled for best rated U21 mainly with some exceptions.

Owusu-Oduro is superb. He’s started every game for AZ Alkmaar (my 2nd team) and he’s been mature and a joy to watch. He’ll be onto bigger and better very soon. Probably the best U21 GK other than Restes right now.

Kayode is an incredible athlete at just 20 and was outstanding last season. Very high potential and certainly one I expect to move soon for more football.

Diao and Mykhavko are both a bit more under the radar but excellent CBs who at very young ages are taking on big roles for their respective clubs in defence. Mykhavko is the best build up CB in his age range in world football and Diao is in the top 4 all rounders too. I expect both to be risers and movers within the next year.

Branthwaite, I don’t know how much you know about him but he is absolutely world class potential. Has everything you’d want a CB to have and very much could be the future of England’s defence in either CB or as a fullback. If you’ve not heard of him give him a Google!

In midfield Lavia is underrated in my view, his time at Southampton should have put him at 87 already and by now he’s easily an 88 or higher player, he’s better than Belgian league players on 88s… and Hinshelwood is Groß 2.0 so very fitting that I had to sell him to make room. Jack is also in the top 5 for holding midfielders in his age bracket. Two outstanding prospects at CM.

Keny Arroyo would have been Sudakov were he a bit younger but for those unfamiliar with his work he’s a dribbly playmaker and has created the 2nd most chances in his league behind only Kendry Paez. He has very high potential and is easily the best prospect for his NT behind Páez. He’s considered the 4th best assisting/shooting RW/CAM.

Ben Seghir is an elite infiltrating midfielder 4th for his age range and increasingly important for his team. A riser no doubt and someone I underrated when we did the Leeds draft. I was 50/50 between him and Griezmann and so I’m delighted to have him especially now he’s 86 rated and has a real chance to hit 90 within 2 seasons.

Roony Bardghji is technically superb and someone I have massive belief in. I really hope he comes back well from his injury (I actually follow his socials) because I think he has the technical ability to play for the best teams in Europe one day.

Endrick. Nuff said.

Not going to be anywhere near the response that post deserves but you've done a great job with the rebuild – and good ages too. Ballsy move to get rid of Griezmann and Shaw, but the right one, with the replacements good for both now and the long term. You'll definitely be up there when United and Everton drop off.

In my starting XI I have four players aged 30+. If at the end of the season I could swap Stones and Alaba for a deal like yours, maybe swap Hakimi for a LB too, I'd take it but can't see anyone doing that.

Thanks for the app link. I don't have an iPhone. In the past I used https://www.lineup-builder.co.uk/ but they revamped their site a while back and very long names don't fit.

Thanks I like looking back at the side and seeing how it’s changed and I really think this is my favourite version of Cardiff since being in the GW. There aren’t many players in the side in real life I don’t like or don’t rate and the youth are genuinely exciting projects.

Shaw isn’t so much a loss after getting lucky in the drafts but Griezmann I think will mean relegation either this season or next. I might have to play a winger out of position just to get a 91 rating into attack which may mean keeping Diaby. We’ll see.

Age wise as the first XI hit 30 (some in 1/2 years) I should have a good idea who is progressing from the youth set up and players like Semenyo, Ferguson, Brazkho, Nanasi, Sudakov and Fabio Silva are all of the ages where in 2 years they’ll be entering or at their peaks and hopefully 90+ players.

I’ve really taken time and care to make this side.

For you Zeno Debast is a great prospect so should cover the loss of Stones but I think your issue will be Alaba. CB/LB is a tough market and the one I’ve spent most of my time scouting but you’ve got great prospects coming through there. Maybe not 93+ players but no reason they couldn’t hit 90. You’re almost better off using Stones and Alaba in a double swap for one elite youngster and maybe a promising one.

Everywhere else though you’re sorted.

I can't believe you still have Fabio Silva. I know you sold him a few months ago and then brought him back but don't see it in him personally.

If I could swap the two for an elite and promising player that'd be great but I just don't have the knack of finding people willing to do such deals. I wish they'd hurry up and give Araujo a rise. He's played 2782 minutes for Benfica since his last increase in 2023!

Lorran is your best youth there but that first XI is absolutely disgusting.

I probably should just give up on him. He takes up squad space and won’t be better than Endrick whereas someone like Djú and Pizzaro have their strikers builds.

Lorran's been struggling to the extent that CSKA Moscow are bidding for him.

Extending age range to U23, I have Pedri (22/92), Nico Williams (22/92), Tiago Santos (22/87), Luka Sucic (22/87), Tomas Araujo (22/82). Mainly missing LCB and CF.

Tiago's injury was awful timing, but can't complain on my RB depth.

I probably should just give up on him. He takes up squad space and won’t be better than Endrick whereas someone like Djú and Pizzaro have their strikers builds.
I think that'd be wise if you do need the space.
