The relative strength of the Premier League

Are we seriously suggesting Lego Pep would be doing good in the CL KO stages?

We are in a good spell but Real would still probably manhandle us over the two legs. I know they haven’t even been at their best in the league but whatever happens they just go out and sign the very best young players in the world year after year. Most of their bench would still start for the competing teams and they were able let a few aging but very important players leave on good terms for big enough money. They are in transition. Once their youth clicks they’ll just go into another cycle. They are also free to keep signing these top shelf kind of players without any real competition now that Barca are broke.
It was tongue in cheek. A jib at Liverpool being so shite and 8th in the league

It’s embarrassing, that with the amount of money in the league that there are so few wins from English clubs in champions league and Europa league. Long may it continue unless it’s Utd

spain still remains the strongest league

Premier League teams in 4 matches:

Wins 0
Scored 3 goals
Conceded 8

Need to spend another billion.

To be honest 3 of them were away matches, against high ranking opposition, where the PL teams, though not winning, would still be confident of going through in their home legs.

Liverpool was cooked though :D

Lukaku and Werner look better than any of our current attackers. Winning transfer policy..?

Do we really need a super league? Best players are at Madrid and PSG and were paying large amounts for Nunez etc. It's a redistribution of wealth itself.

I think it's pretty clear now (I'm a PSG fan so I already knew) that having good coaches in a good cycle is as important as spending insane amounts of money. PL was fortunate enough to have Klopp and Guardiola's cycle at their prime at the same time, it was amazing, but even if it remains the best league, the level at the top really decreased since these teams look at the end of their respective cycle (they were actually pretty long).

I think one of the reasons PL are so weak despite their economic advantage is because of these really good players that are economically safe rather choose to play in a country like Spain and Italy, mostly because of the temperature and culture. And the majority of all these good players are from South America and they certainly will rather live in spain or italy than rainy brittain.

The constant dick waving "PL is better than every other league, every other league is crap" is so annoying. Really makes me actively root for other teams in the CL against English teams even more than I already do.

You don't really see this from any other league but there seems to be some kind of complex with fans of PL teams to always want to claim that the league is so far ahead of everyone else and that no other team can hack it here.

Yeah, even when the spanish league was at its best, you didn't have that much "he didn't prove it in the La Liga" arguments from spanish fans. Or the magical (yet ridiculous) double sided argument :
- PL clubs are great in the CL, it's because it's the most competitive league in the world!
- PL clubs suck in the CL, it's because it's the most competitive league in the world and players are tired!

The top 4 in PL is severely overrated, no doubt about that.

It feels like Man Utd or City are the best teams in PL right now and they're both behind teams like Bayern and PSG. Real Madrid, Barcelona, Inter, Napoli is arguably stronger this season.

yeah that’s it in a nutshell. Also the ridiculous demeaning of player achievements ‘he only did it in a certain league’ or ‘against farmers’ about genuinely world class players that have proven it in every level.

It’s never been about the quality of the top teams - it’s been the quality of the bottom teams that takes its toll on the top teams and they regularly don’t perform in the CL whilst Real Madrid win the CL every bloody year.

Brentford and in particular Brighton’S scouting a whole brilliant team is an example of this. Newcastle competition for the CL is an example of this who were absolutely nothing last year. Leicester City won the bloody title just not that long ago. What is the example of that in another league? Even Arsenal being a nothing team for nearly 15 years are on top of this league completely out of the blue when no one would have guessed this club to be in the top come March 2023.

It’s the same top 3 in nearly every other league and nearly the same top 2 winning the cup.

Here we have had City, Arsenal, Chelsea, United, Liverpool, Tottenham, Leicester, Newcastle in the top 3 at different points or even winning the league over the last 10 years.

Anyway, this has been done to death and some people will not see it and agree with it whilst some will do.

It’s boring to talk about.

You decided to to bring the "PL clubs suck in the CL, it's because it's the most competitive league in the world and players are tired!" argument to a whole new level

So now, the quality of the top teams in the CL doesn't depend on the quality of said top teams. Absolutely brilliant.

The PL is certainly a more competitive league than others. There are some good reasons for it and some bad ones. But I don't understand this desire to turn negatives into positives.

In the last ten years Chelsea have a 10th placed league finish and are seemingly on their way to another incredibly low finish. This is an absolute embarassment for a club of their size and budget and is solid evidence that they are mismanaged. United have been mismanaged for around a decade and have had multiple poor seasons in which they fail to qualify to the CL. Arsenal had two terrible seasons in which they finished 8th.

This failure is then spun as a positive because other clubs take these CL spots, as if there was anything meaningful about it. There isn't, it's just how numbers work. The idea is that the "bottom teams" are causing this failure, but that's obviously false. The Guardian had an article just yesterday showing how the points gap between the top and bottom has increased over the years.

This kind of stuff doesn't happen to La Liga's top teams, like Real Madrid and Barcelona, because they don't allow it to happen. It didn't use to happen in the PL either, as the top 3-4 was quite stable from mid 00s to early 10s.

A league so bad even Claudio Ranieri can win a title there.

I find it beautiful that Leicester won it and not just Real Madrid doing it again and again. And again.

What a season to remember for most fans of the PL compared to some random ass season where Barcelona or Real Madrid won that league again. And again. :boring:

Anyway, I respect Real Madrid for what they do in the CL but as you said in your first line - the PL is the most competitive league - and for me that has its toll.

If you don’t then fine. It doesn’t really bother me.

Also,

"Top 3" is a completely arbitrary standard. Most league races are not between 3 teams, they are between 2. CL qualification is decided on the basis of the top 4 teams, not top 3.

This arbitrary standard would allow someone to point out that the top 3 in La Liga has been fixed for a decade. The top 4, on the other hand, has included Real Sociedad, Athletic Bilbao, Sevilla, Valencia, and Villareal. Some of these clubs have had deep EL runs and even wins, as well as played domestic cup finals and even won them.

Serie A is on its way to have 4 different champions in 4 consecutive seasons. Besides those teams they've seen Atalanta, Roma, and Lazio finish in top 4.

It was very nice that Leicester won it. But it was a freak occurrence that does not reflect the general quality of the PL. Leicester have not come even remotely close to winning the PL before or after, they haven't even finished top 4.

People love the 'Leicester' data point because, without it, the PL champions of the last decade are: two billionaire-owned clubs (City, Chelsea) and one of the two largest clubs historically (Liverpool).

The Premier League has such a financial advantage that they should have squads big enough. Chelsea’s squad was so big they left players they’re paying hundreds of thousands a week out of a 25 man squad for the Champions League, they can’t even fit them all on the bench.

I mean, english teams have generally been dominant in europe over the last 5-6 seasons, ever since the league appeared to collectively pull their fingers out of their arses and start making smart use of their wealth

That does not suggest this famed PL competitiveness has an effect on european form...

@Wumminator relative wumming strength is unparalleled. He created a wumming thread that will never die.

Well done sir.:)

Barca.
Madrid.
PSG.
Bayern.
Napoli.

Think all these teams would win the PL this season; bar maybe Napoli?

Just last game we had to rest players against a key fixture against bloody Leicester City that got us in to the title race so we can have a go at Barcelona.

How does the Europe leagues not take toll on the actual leagues and vice versa.

Even people are talking about how the World Cup fixtures effected PSG!

We have a very competitive league and it takes its toll.

Leicester City are 14th on the PL table and finished 8th last year.

Barcelona had to play against Villareal, who are 9th in La Liga table and finished 7th last season.
