The Referee Enabled Shithousery of Spanish Teams

Every time we play Spanish teams, they always seem to play shite football with dirty tactics.

It’s no wonder La Liga is dying. Most teams are shocking in that league.

As annoying as it is, its part of the dark arts of football. City do it every game to a slightly lesser extent. Rather than complain about it we need to get some of that shithousery into our team. Hopefully we can get a few more players in along the lines of Martinez and Antony who actually know how to do it.

We had three bookings. Martinez was booked for a clean tackle. Ronaldo was booked for heading the ball, and Dalot was booked for ???

It's incredible, really.
That’s true. All 3 bookings were a joke.

Martinez is out of the next game too which could be against a big team.

Dunno what you all are on about, it's a right barrell of laughs whenever they do it

unless it's against ny team. Then it's blasphemy and everybody should be in jail

I don't especially care about the europa, but this is a real problem in European football that absolutely advantages most Spanish teams. Its weak refereeing and easy to manage if the ref wants to. We wouldn't get away with it and neither would another English team or German team or French team. Its a weird bias that's in refs consciousness that means it's somehow different when a Spanish team does it.

Seems like the only solution to me. It is a bit cringe to watch, like Bruno holding on to the ball or complaining to the ref all the time. Or Ronaldo diving and moaning for everything. Kills the game itself, but we need more of this against Spanish sides.

The fact they won’t even review yellow cards is mental when they’re out here ruling important players out. VAR is literally right there, use it. Keep the foul if you have to, just rescind the card.

That ref looked like an absolute melt as well. Just caved to any kind of pressure.

Second rate competition, second rate referees. Even in the CL you have refs from lower leagues getting completely outpaced and conned by the best sides. It's been a problem for years.

The fans play a huge part when you play over there too

Screaming their lungs out at anything and everything , whistling, jeering, booing. I'm all for fan partizanship but they're more interested in calling for fouls and yellow/red cards than they are encouraging play - it's no wonder the teams buy into it. The biggest cheers of the night are for winning free kicks

With your responses in the Arsenal thread and in this thread you’ve fast become my favourite poster on this forum, keep up the good fight.

Come on admit it. We all find this funny when it happens against a team we don't care for and absolutely hilarious if it happens to a rival

Don't ever take shithousery out of the game

Btw, anybody knows if Girona's GOALKEEPER Gazzaniga (of spurs fame) is drinking enough water? Wouldn't want him to develop CRAMPS again in a game...

It was all hilarious till it was Real Madrid keeping Liverpool out of another CL by manhandling their best forward.
It's not funny when it's Sevilla and Villareal playacting us out of EL wins and Atletico time-wasting us out of the CL.

It's very simple. Funny when it's Liverpool, annoying when it's United.

Actually, all three bookings were for arms making contact with the face, only problem was that the most brutal tackle was judged to be by Martinez on the poor Sociedad player's elbow. Almost knocked him out due to obvious frustration after just not having received a free kick and still the referee judged him to have been fouled. One of the worst calls I've seen in my life and I'm only slightly exaggerating

Exactly. Do you really not want to see Liverpool getting screwed anymore???

As for you getting screwed over, the answer is the same: git gud

Remember how Atletico shithoused us out of the CL that one year, and nobody said a peep, then when they tried doing it to City all the pundits were like "oh my god how can they keep doing it?! Surely mods this cannot be right??". And all this despite the fact that the biggest act of shithousing that sparked the big melee at the end was Foden getting injured and walking back onto the pitch to lie down.

It's been always like this, even prime Barcelona pulled out stuff like this, we just gott to learn to live with it.

Also Madrid was surprising straightforward in their last win.

For as long as i can remember, referees have always favoured Spanish sides when they play a Premiership side in Europe.

Its been going on so long, there is probably some shady rule somewhere.

They're pests, or trolls. But playing that way makes the other team get frustrated, so they dive in harder or are a bit more physical in trying to regain possession that they do technically foul the player. The ref probably doesn't want to call it, and knows the player is rolling around in phantom pain, but because there was contact they'll keep calling it. Composure is the only way to counter it, as hard as it is.

But even if you're incredibly composed (and being composed enough to never make a foul means you'll never win the ball from them), they'll find a way to kill the tempo of the game which will ruin the momentum of the team chasing a result. A referee will never book a player for going down injured, and we saw tonight that when a player just decided to stay down after an attacking corner the referee will stop the game and have him assessed, so instead of us being able to keep the ball rolling, they just go down in a crowd of bodies and the ref will literally never question it. If we hadn't tackled them, they would've gone down with cramp and had their team-mates stretch their calves for 30 seconds before playing on. All those little stoppages kill the tempo but a referee will never see through it.

Nah, they can win as long as we win. It's time for to revolt agains the Spanish.

As for the second, we'll see how the CL and EL turn out this year for clubs not named Real Madrid.

Off the top of my head, that's two games against Real Sociedad and a final against Villareal that the refs have awarded against us by encouraging shithousery.
Atletico Madrid last year...

We were desperately scrambling for a comeback all the time, we couldn't afford to shithouse! :(

Actually yeah. Long may it continue!

La liga is shite.

It's why majority of people who watch outside of Spain watch 2 games a year to see which one of them will win the league.

Spanish clubs in European competitions are the most playacting, shithousing, non-footballing teams in the world, and the refs encourage and reward it. Bar Barcelona in their prime, not a single Spanish side I've seen actually play good football. They are football's antithesis. Real Madrid, Real Sociedad, Villareal, Sevilla, Atletico - not a single one of them actually display their alleged 'passing prowess', and spend more time rolling on the floor and exaggerating contact than actually trying to play the game.

Unless the referees in these games are thoroughly vetted and stay competent in the games themselves, I have no idea what can be done about it.
Its entertainment. They put the WWE in football. Stop being such a purist.

It may have been unintentional on your part but it did make me root for you in the end.

Prime Barcelona were the absolute best (worst?) at genuine shithousery. They practically invented it.

Indeed, I would become engulfed with a throbbing urge to floor Busquets whenever I saw them play, time seems to have erased some of their shadier sides from memory.

Look at Eurovision for reference. GB always get zero points from other European countries.

They play like they've got 11 Bruno's in their team. That's the difference between English sides and some of the Spanish sides. It tends to be individuals that harass refs, moan, roll around etc, whereas with this lot it seems like a concerted team effort to slow the game down. I can understand it because I don't think they want a basketball game with the English sides, but it's up to the refs to be better.

Athletico last year as well. Ball was only in play for half the game. Brutal stuff and something has to be done about it.
