Spanish clubs in European competitions are the most playacting, shithousing, non-footballing teams in the world, and the refs encourage and reward it. Bar Barcelona in their prime, not a single Spanish side I've seen actually play good football. They are football's antithesis. Real Madrid, Real Sociedad, Villareal, Sevilla, Atletico - not a single one of them actually display their alleged 'passing prowess', and spend more time rolling on the floor and exaggerating contact than actually trying to play the game.

Unless the referees in these games are thoroughly vetted and stay competent in the games themselves, I have no idea what can be done about it.

Nothing on the pitch can be done about it but the tv revenues tell the story. That’s where they’re punished

Off the top of my head, that's two games against Real Sociedad and a final against Villareal that the refs have awarded against us by encouraging shithousery.

The referee thing does get me

Everyone knows what Spanish teams are like and what they’re going to do

But the referees don’t ever react to it or display any common sense

As I've posted in the post-game thread, I never want to see us play a Spanish side again until stop clocks are introduced.

It feels like every single fecking game we play against a Spanish side is the same. Complete anti-football. Watching players roll around. What feels like about 20 minutes of actual football played in the whole match. Piss weak referees who buy every last dive and allow every last time wasting tactic.

Is there a La Liga defence team or something like the bundesliga one?

It's not that the Spanish teams are good at doing it, it's that the referees are truly awful. The poor standard of refereeing in the European competitions costs games and trophies, and has done for a while

Atletico in the second half at OT last year was the worse I’ve ever seen. Wasn’t the ball in play for 50 minutes in total or something stupid?

Never known so many players get injured to miraculously be fine 2 minutes later. Can’t stand Spanish teams.

I despise the cnuts. Nothing more frustrating and the referees not only allow it but seem the favour the Spanish shithouses the majority of the time.

Not really. Latest tv deal in Spain was juicy, including the international tv rights. Breaks 2B year iirc

PL makes more because the british consumers have greater spending power and are more keen to spend for football, and internationally the collective draw of the top 6 is bigger than Spain's big 2 plus atletico

Prime Barcelona playacted all the time. I remember being frustrated that a team of so much talent would resort to shithousery for winning games. When they could easily win against any team with pure talent.

You and I have been watching a very different premier league. The PL has poor ref calls, but the sides actually want to play football.

Nah, some sides are fecking awful for it. Everton and Villa are cnuts especially. But it's not every game in the PL that it's like that. Feels like every game against Spanish sides though.

Too few of us and we largely don't care. League has dominated the sport for a decade very recently, we all see its dropped a level in the last 4-5 years

Then stop losing to them

City have shown if you don't lose you can out-shithouse them just fine :D

Same with Atletico last season. It’s just absolutely dire and no wonder people don’t give a shit about anyone except Barca and Madrid.

Nah, I'm talking about them in games against other teams.

Referee did have a shocker. Near enough every 50/50 going their way and dishing out yellows for challenges that weren't even fouls. Still, should've probably put it to bed before that point.

The English teams and fans should shed their pride and play at the same levels in European games.

Bizarre how referees from across the continent facilitate them year after year.... I can hear the screams of yet another La Liga player rolling on the grass in my dreams

They do. The key is putting yourself in a position to do it, and need it

The league is also unwatchable, I really don't know how fans can stomach this crap.

I would rather watch any other top league than La Liga.

It was another stupid refereeing that cost us the first leg. These refs have some unusual respect for these poor Spanish teams in Europe.

No worse than the Premier League tbf.

Never mind the big calls, I'm just frustrated by how often refs seem to feck us over with the "smaller" decisions. Sociedad got 11 free kicks tonight, versus 5 for us. It's been the same in almost every Premier League game this season (if the stats I've read are correct).

British tv is going down and the foreign markets have overtaken domestic deal as the majority share of income. Fans enjoy the football as a whole, not just the top 6. The entire reason there’s a top 6 v 2 is due to the appeal of the league.
There’s a reason why Englands tv deal beats La Liga and Germany combined and it’s not because fans want to watch Spurs instead of Sevilla

Just to be clear, all my frustration aside, you can understand where these clubs come from. Bar Barca, Real (and to an extent, Atletico), these clubs operate on a fraction of the budget of the big boys. They resort to whatever it takes to win, given the imbalance of the squad's abilities. It is rightly an achievement when the wins come in for 'underdogs' Sevilla or Villareal against the world-famous fat-money PL big boys, no matter how they get it.

However, it is the ref's responsibility to make sure the sport is played on the pitch, that football continues. Shithousery is not the issue as much as the encouragement of the refs for it is. We didn't succeed in topping the group today today because Real Sociedad players rolled about on the floor - we lost direct entry to knockouts because the ref had a Pavlovian response of showing a United player a yellow every time they did.

Sevilla probably beats them all though. They not only kiss the grass all the time, they would actually look at the refs and shed tears. You would think somebody killed their dog.
Not to forget the imaginary cards they wave while falling down.

Getting fecked by the refs against Spanish teams in Europe. It’s football heritage.

That Dalot booking boiled my piss.

We had three bookings. Martinez was booked for a clean tackle. Ronaldo was booked for heading the ball, and Dalot was booked for ???

It's incredible, really.
