Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Just came to me, if you’ve not seen Touching The void then you should 10/10

Bitter Rice - Sexy neorealism is the best neorealism (see Ossessione also).

The Brown Bunny - Superb. I was a fool for letting it's bad rep put me off for so long, another case of Ebert being a trash tub of lard.

Isn't that the infamous bj film?

Maze Runner: The Death Cure
A lot of these tween movies came out around the time Twilight was released and they're all shit but this series is actually ok. Doesn't really have a stupid love triangle, just a sort of fun action movie 6/10

You're just basing that on all the Clark/Noe films you've seen aren't you?
Clark, Noe, von Trier, Winterbottom, Breillat, John Cameron Mitchell.

The first three are sort of birds of a feather. I have no idea what Winterbottom was trying to do with 9 Songs. Romance is shit without the sex so won’t necessarily pin it on that. Shortbus is boring but I quite like JCM.

He actually revised his review after seeing a new cut, giving it three stars out of four: https://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/the-brown-bunny-2004
The damage had already been done. Gallo's obviously a nutcase but I thought Brown Bunny was a daring, Cassavetian piece of work that probably hasn't been seen in American cinema ever since.

That's an uninspiring bunch alright, though I quite liked Breillat's Fat Girl. It could be used to good effect, like in In the Realm of the Senses and some
Radley Metzger films.

Haven't seen it (not much of it anyway...) but I've wanted to for some time. Will try to find it.

Just stuck Mowgli on. The sound is weird. Some of the voices sound like they're clearly in a room which just sounds odd when they're meant to be in a jungle. Not sure about Baloo being a cockney either.

Ready Player One (2018)

The action sequences are superb, and the VR game theme is always a big plus for me. It's pretty fun blockbuster movie, with mediocre story and all the characters are not fleshed out at all. Basically anything in the game world is awesome and anything outside of it is a bit boring.

That Gundam vs Mechagodzilla fight though, that will always be one of my favorite scene in any movies, ever. I can't believe I'm watching Gundam in a Hollywood movies

7/10

Paranormal: White Noise (AKA The Sound)
A supernatural skeptic sets off to debunk paranormal sightings using low frequency sound waves in an abandoned subway station and is met with unforeseen evil and eerie memories. Such a boring movie. Most of it consists of a woman walking around texting. The lighting was horribly blue, but not in a narrative or stylistic way, more to cover the low budget. The ghost GFX was also laughably bad and the plot was dire. Yawned my way through this one 1/10

Overlord
Got what I paid for - violence, gruesomeness, some tense moments. No point going on to great detail about it.

It's one of the better movies this year.

Edit: didn't recognise at the time but it has Greyworm and Euron Greyjoy from GoT in it.

The Big Short

So....half of the dialogue was basically as clear as Chinese to me. They tried to give very very basic explanations but that's kinda the problem, they were so basic that I still couldn't connect all the dots because there was clearly information missing.

Yeah I was being way too broad. I haven't seen a good film with unsimulated sex in it but they're bad in their own right. I think Gallo sees himself as an heir to Cassavetes/Antonioni but Brown Bunny struck me an excuse to shoot himself as a moody grifter with a bid ol' dick.

I paused like every 20 minutes while watching it to google things to help me understand. Even after all that I didn't fully understand the movie until I watch some more explanation about what actually happened in real life

Through a series of unfortunate events I ended up watching a movie called Titan the other day - it is absolutely atrocious - seriously, never watch it

Is that the one with Sam Worthington? If so, I watched it not so long ago. Absolute farce of a movie

The Hallow
A family who moved into a remote mill house in Ireland finds themselves in a fight for survival with demonic creatures living in the woods. Whilst I loved the visual look, acting and premise as well as the fact that it felt like a fairytale with gothic elements, you can't really root for the cardboard cut out characters and it's just not scary 5.5/10

Irish folk?

Swinging Safari

Some very funny bits but doesn't really hang together very well as a film.

6/10
