I, Tonya.
The presents are wrapped, and I'm off to join the family tomorrow, so I'm not even responsible for food prep or bedmaking. I'm settled in for the afternoon with my glass of red wine and a dark chocolate hazelnut bar and I've watched my fifth version of Christmas Carol this week. So I hit the "free on Amazon video" page and stumbled across I Tonya. Now even the word biopic usually makes me run away, but something about the poster must have got to me because I hit play.
The first couple of minutes nearly made me go for the remote again, too reminiscent of the opening teaser sequence on those "true crime" shows, but again something slowed me down (maybe the dark chocolate) and the first of the "action" sequences got me hooked as 4 year old Tonya, and her chainsmoking mom, hit the ice.
Allison Janney (as mom) and Margot Robbie (as Tonya) are great in it, and no one else matters that much.
We're warned about the hazards of listening to our inconsistent and potentially unreliable narrators. Yet, the narrative is compelling and as an outsider looking in, very plausible. It's a story of class, gender and violence (domestic and otherwise), delivered without too much prettification or maudlin sentimentality, but with a decent dose of dark humour.
Is it true? Don't know, it felt true enough to be possible and it's a compelling way to spend a couple of hours. Especially if you can get it for free on Prime.
