Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Bird Box I thought was excellent, watched it last week , not go round to a review yet, but worth watching.

It wasn't at all bad. The lack of an explanation of what the beast/enemy was annoyed me a bit but trying to explain it might have been more annoying.

Creed 2 - I just can’t get behind Creed during the fights. Rocky is the only character worth watching. 5.5/10

Bumblebee
Fairly crap, which was what I expected.

But if you turn your brain off and don't focus on the inconsistencies and issues (eg. how come the transformers all speak English, and how can they transform in to cars and jets, before ever coming to earth?) then it is more enjoyable.

On a side note - the main actress looks like a young Asia Argento.

Searching (2018)
Weird film. Harold was still there, but it looked like they couldn't get the Kumar actor back for this sequel.

There was also a strangely anti-weed message and none of the humour hit the target. The original is still the best imho.

I, Tonya.

The presents are wrapped, and I'm off to join the family tomorrow, so I'm not even responsible for food prep or bedmaking. I'm settled in for the afternoon with my glass of red wine and a dark chocolate hazelnut bar and I've watched my fifth version of Christmas Carol this week. So I hit the "free on Amazon video" page and stumbled across I Tonya. Now even the word biopic usually makes me run away, but something about the poster must have got to me because I hit play.

The first couple of minutes nearly made me go for the remote again, too reminiscent of the opening teaser sequence on those "true crime" shows, but again something slowed me down (maybe the dark chocolate) and the first of the "action" sequences got me hooked as 4 year old Tonya, and her chainsmoking mom, hit the ice.

Allison Janney (as mom) and Margot Robbie (as Tonya) are great in it, and no one else matters that much.

We're warned about the hazards of listening to our inconsistent and potentially unreliable narrators. Yet, the narrative is compelling and as an outsider looking in, very plausible. It's a story of class, gender and violence (domestic and otherwise), delivered without too much prettification or maudlin sentimentality, but with a decent dose of dark humour.

Is it true? Don't know, it felt true enough to be possible and it's a compelling way to spend a couple of hours. Especially if you can get it for free on Prime.

So, I've got through watching Venom (3/10), Searching (7/10) and Mission Impossible: Fallout (4/10) all in one day.

I love Christmas.

The Greatest Showman.

WOW outstanding, if you have not seen , you need to.
Musicals are not something I normally watch, but I would watch this again and again.

10/10
I normally don't watch musicals but last year, 2 of my top 3 films were musicals

The Greatest Showman
Mother!
La La Land

I tried watching the Greatest Showman, but couldn't get past the first few minutes. So then I fast forwarded past the singing and the feckers only started singing a new song.

Why would you watch a musical and skip the singing

Lion King
For some reason, I had never seen this movie.. it's great 8/10

Bird Box

Very similar concept to A Quiet Place but focused on sight rather than sound. Really enjoyed the movie, good acting, great build up of tension and done solid characters. My only issue we that a bunch of questions weren't answered and Machine cnut Kelly. I read the screenplay for this a while back and was wondering why it wasn't picked up... Good it eventually did 8/10

Do you also turn the radio off everytime a song comes on ? Quite a few of the songs from this film have gone on to become big hits in the charts. 'This is me' is brilliant. It probably reflects society just as much as it did back then.

The Favourite is dark, absurd and very funny. First Lanthimos film to really sustain its running length and the first with actual recognisable human beings, maybe because he didn't write it for once. Not as openly farcical as the trailer as suggests and a lot sadder.

Bird box
Apocalyptic plague. A type of entity causes suicides(a bit similar to the movie "the happening")
A bit bland to be a movie. It could be the pilot of a serie.
I would have developed that theme with another argument.
Many interior scenes, less tension than I expected.
I don't see the point in the scenes that are not flashback .6 / 10

Jesus fecking Christ, did Gerard Butler owe somebody a favor?

Hunter Killer is absolutely dire! Was hoping for a decent sub flick but I get a straight to video piece of shit type movie.

The Night Comes For Us
Indonesian gangster/martial arts film in the vein of The Raid or Headshot. This is an ultra violent, non-stop martial arts film, kinda like porn for violence. It was good but I see people saying it's better than The Raid, which it is not. Whilst the action and fight choreography and gallons of blood were cool, it had many issues. The plot made no sense, but they kept focusing on it. Characters randomly just kept popping in and out with little to no explanation of who they are and worst of all, in the fight scenes where it was 1 vs. many, the crowd of fighters just stood around like video game bad guys and attacked the protagonist one at a time. The Raid didn't have this issue as much with it taking place in enclosed spaces. Having said all that, if you want a violent action film, this is right up your street 7/10

I enjoyed Bird Box but felt it pulled some of it's punches. It seemed to be an obvious metaphor for raising children with fear and I thought
when they were on the boat that the lad would be the one to look (and not see the creatures) as he seemed unfazed by it all. That would've made more sense to me than a world survived by crazy people and blind people. What about blind crazy people?

Also watched The Sisters Brothers last night and I'll give it the obligatory "much preferred the book" review. The film failed to capture the screwball tone of the book and weirdly when I read it I imagined John C Reilly playing the role with far more humour than he did in this. He looks shit with long hair too.

I thought she would make the girl look, as it wasn't her daughter. Especially after she said no so vehemently after her son offered. I thought it was a bit of a cop-out when she said that no one would look in the end.

Mid90s, Jonah Hills Directirial debut. Really enjoyed this, characters were really likeable and the soundtrack is perfect. Anybody who grew up in the 90s, likes Hip Hop, skateboarding or Rock must watch this.

Exactly how I felt. First couple of minutes I regretted not choosing something else. Ended up really enjoying it. Janney and Robbie were both great. Totally convincing

Jailbreak -
A high profile criminal with a price on his head is escorted to his prison cell by 3 police officers. All hell breaks lose when the prisoners escape and the police officers find themselves trapped in the prison and caught between two rival gangs- both trying to claim the bounty on their prisoner's head.

Cambodian version of The Raid with less gore and less budget. Lots of action, some pretty good martial arts and more than its fair share of cheesy 'sexy bad ass women in leather' scenes. The female police officer is strangely gorgeous though, and I may have found myself crushing hard, so it's a clear 10/10 from me. It is actually pretty enjoyable and generally well choreographed considering the $250k budget.

Vice - I thought The Big Short succeeded in spite of Adam McKay's bullshit but Vice does not. It's clunky, shoddily edited, full of irritating fourth wall breaking nonsense and the second half is a rapid run through of the Bush years with little insight. That said, I find the history and Cheney's role in it interesting enough for this to keep my diverted for two hours.

Torment
Two parents find themselves fighting to get their little boy back from a sadistic cult, who have stolen him and plan on dark ideas. Another day and another forgettable horror flick. Has that trope that I can't stand; woman is captured, man comes in and hits the captor with a bat. He drops the bat and hugs the woman telling her "everything will be ok" and gets clubbed in the head by the now awake captor. Why don't they just fecking run away and talk later? Hate these lazy ass movies 2/10

Sandra Bullock is David Moyes and her children are LVG and Mourinho respectively. The unseen demon is the fear of Liverpool winning the title. Anyone who sees it instantly kills themselves. Only crazy people think it looks wonderful.
