Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Saw 2001 in 70mm this week, really is one of those films to be viewed on the big screen.

The Endless
Two brothers return to the cult they fled from years ago to discover that the group's beliefs may be more sane than they once thought. Slowly paced mystery cult film. Very low budget, but the story is intriguing enough for you to forget that quite quickly. The narrative takes some strange turns in the final act but it was a little too slow for me. Maybe I was too tired for a film like this on a Saturday night 5.5/10

Searching

After his 16-year-old daughter goes missing, a desperate father breaks into her laptop to look for clues to find her. Finally, a film using computer/phone screens etc done right. Mainly because the story was actually interesting, the mystery was compelling and there was an emotional core to the movie, with the screens used as a vehicle to tell the story rather being the story in themselves. Many twists and turns, some I saw coming, others definitely not. Really enjoyed this and recommend people watch it on their laptops 8/10

Guy who produced Searching said it's the only type of movie he's interested in making going forwards. Many(?) more on the horizon!

Nice. I been making short little horror movies for a while but this technique might allow me to make a low budget feature. I have my own spin on it, so keeping that hush hush for now but it could be a good way in.

Black Wake

Specialists gather in a top-secret facility to investigate a series of strange deaths on beaches along the Atlantic Ocean. One of the team's scientists (Nana Gouvea) examines video evidence.
OMG this is a dreadful film.

1/10 and thats only for Nana Gouvea

Sicario: Day of something something: Disappointing, never needed a sequel. Pointless plot with no real meaning and a cheap ending. Del Toro saved it. bad coke/10

Thought it was okay.... something to kick back and watch on a night....the ending tho....just sorta happened...didn't quite wrap up everything.

Peppermint - Okay/10

I actually liked this movie even tho it wasnt overall very good. Enjoyed JLaw in this role. I think with a bigger budget to add to the production value it could of been better even tho this story has been told a million times. Would like to see another with the Wick poeple in charge.

Reign of Fire - watched this last night and it’s so good, Gerard Butler, Christian Bale and one heck of a performance from matthew mcconaughey, he plays some sort of American solider but he seems a little unhinged, he looks incredible. Oh and I forgot to mention the guy who plays Joffrey in GoT is in it too, non speaking part. (its like he follows Bale around as he was in Batman Begins as well)

Dragons released on the world, burn/kill everything and everyone and they mostly live in London and are starting to starve. Bale and crew living in a run down castle just hiding and hoping to outlast the dragons, matthew mcconaughey shows up as a dragon slayer promising to rid the world of dragons with his plan, doesn’t go to plan yada yada well worth a watch if you’re just looking for something entertaining.

The Predator(2017)

Negatives - One of the worst movies I've ever seen

Positives - I've seen it so you don't have to.

0/10

American Gangster (2007)

For some reason I enjoyed it more on 2nd viewing, compared to the 1st viewing. Maybe I understood it all better or something. Anyway, great movie.

The Disaster Artist
Big fan of The Room and this does it hilarious justice. Really funny and some great cameos 8/10

Hereditary

One of the best horror O have seen for a good long while, thought the acting was good , the story was good , the music was excellent.
A film has not creeped me out that much in a long time.
The ending was crazy !! but did not spoil the film.

8/10

Love that film right from the start, i watch it every time its on tv.

Revenge

Thought this was pretty good, so much blood, never heard of it before today but id recommend it. 7/10

I think they could have made the ending better by making the possession more pronounced. The spirit wasn't all that animated for me.

The Basement.

A seemingly innocent man is abducted by a notorious L.A. serial killer, who forces his victims to switch roles with him so that he can enact his own capture, torture and murder.
I enjoyed this, with a twist in the end I did not see.
The blow torch bit was brutal.
6/10

Downrange
Stranded at the side of the road after a tire blowout, a group of friends become targets for an enigmatic sniper. Interesting premise but as with more one-location films, loses steam quickly. The acting was also laughable along with the dialogue. Got bored quite quickly 3/10

My Friend Dahmer

A young Jeffrey Dahmer struggles to belong in high school. Biopic of the younger days of Jeffrey Dahmer... usual coming of age kind of movie. It pretty much ends at the point in his life that I actually wanted to see. This was super slow, really boring and not my kind of film at all 1/10

I've watched this so many times in the past and yet I've never realized the actor playing Joffrey is in it! Now I want to watch this again just to see that bit.

I did feel this dragged a bit in earlier parts of the movie but it gets pretty good later on. I mean, dragons + those actors meant this was always going to be a good watch.

I’d seen it a few times as well and never noticed but I’m not sure if the last time I saw it was pre game of thrones. Now he is unmissable. He is in two shots where he is easily spotted. After the star wars re-enactment and later he has a solo screen section where it’s just zoomed in on him looking at something. Even looking at him there and in Batman Begins all I see is his face from that scene in GoT.

What We do In The Shadows.

Could have been better but it is very good, the bit with Nick and the window had me in stitches, just watch it, its worth it. 7/10

Three Identical Strangers Documentary about triplets separated at birth. Wow, if this was a drama you'd think the story was too far-fetched. I won't give away too much of the story but this is a must-see.

Hotel Artemis
Set in riot-torn, near-future Los Angeles, 'Hotel Artemis' follows the Nurse, who runs a secret, members-only emergency room for criminals. Slow paced at times but I loved the premise and it felt very original. Jut wish it pushed the envelope further in the final act so in the end, felt like a missed opportunity. But it was well made and had a great cast, worth watching 6.5/10

A Prayer Before Dawn. A British boxer ends up in a Thai prison on a drugs charge. Sparse dialogue and a lack of plot points allows the performances, direction and lyrical camera work do the storytelling. It's enthralling, gruelling and pretty great. It's always refreshing to see films by people that clearly value filmmaking as a storytelling craft, particularly when so many modern films seem to use the form for little else than recording a script.

Love, Simon - a coming of age movie about an in-the-closet gay teenager.

Surprisingly (for me) good film. Charming, sincere and enjoyable. 7.5/10

Leave No Trace is a cracking little film based on a true story about a man and his daughter who live in a park in Oregon. Brilliant performances by the two leads. 8/10

Thank you for the suggestion. Gripping, emotional and very well made. Truly a remarkable story but I feel it kind of lost its way towards the end.
