Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

The VVitch (2015)

Very impressed. No idea how this has many IMDB reviews titled 'Worst movie ever' and the like.

8/10
Because it was marketed like it was The Conjuring and attracted the wrong audience, who all hated it.

I quite liked Tree of Life but I really don't think I need a 188min version of it.
Not only will the Collection deliver 50 minutes of new footage, putting Tree at 188 minutes, but you’ll basically be getting an entirely new movie. Criterion’s technical director Lee Kline tells IndieWire that he worked in conjunction with Malick, cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki, sound editor Joel Dougherty, and more to create a new version of the film that includes new foley and sound effects created on a soundstage, a multi-track mix for the entire film, and new color grading (supervised by Lubezki) for the entire work, not just the new scenes. “I don’t really make new movies,” Kline told IndieWire, “and that was pretty much what we did.”

A 'new movie' sounds promising, maybe some more meat to the Sean Penn scenes and other stuff. Most of his post Days of Heaven work could use a rework in the editing room.

The first cover looked awful, glad they fixed it.

Really though, reviews like 'This movie sux!' are ridiculous.

Ghost House
A young couple go on an adventurous vacation to Thailand only to find themselves haunted by a malevolent spirit after naively disrespecting a Ghost House. It was fun watching this because it was generally well shot and the Thailand locations made for something a little different but the film felt less like a story and more like a bunch of horror set-pieces strung together by a paper thin plot. The scare scenes also didn't work. Didn't spend enough time building them up and it stole a lot of scare tactics from J/K Horror. All in all it was an ok watch that had potential to be much better 5.5/10

The witch was great. That goat was great, possibly the greatest of all time. Wasn't sure about the ending though, thought they could have done it differently.

I thought Hereditary was genuinely creepy. Won't go into the plot but I thought the twists were well hidden, Tony Collette was great and there were more than a few scenes that made my blood run cold. Good stuff.

Upgrade
Fecking great. Watertight plot (unusual for this genre) with cracking chop socky action, some proper gruey moments and a charismatic and extremely watchable lead performance from “not Tom Hardy” (who was also great in Quarry btw) Some very funny lines too. Arguably the most enjoyable film of its type since Robocop. Recommended.

Accident (1967) - Another smashing Joseph Losey/Harold Pinter collaboration. Crisp looking to a tee and thoroughly misanthropic, none of these upper class characters were held in very high regard by Pinter. Dirk Bogarde put in another good 'tortured Dirk Bogarde' performance, not the greatest performance by Jacqueline Sassard in a rather thin role but her mysterious looks went a long way. I also liked when it suddenly morphed into a Alain Resnais film starring Delphine Seyrig for about 5-10 minutes.

Finally got around to watching Train to Busan. Loved it.
Can’t believe the dad didn’t survive.

The Guardians (2017): or and the award goes to your favourite critics favourite film of the year Les Gardiennes. A story of the peasant women left to tend the field and family while men went to war. Very pretty sets, music, tracking shots and photography of very pretty women. It's very glam and a bit gaudy baroque, fringed in luminous oranges and luxurious blues, which rather than grounding us in the toil of the french fields, evokes visions of rich patrons and ground lapis lazuli. Ermanno Moli this is not. The plotting is predictable and the performances have a melodramatic edge. It's big F feminist in the grauniad sense, i.e. loud, showy obvious and peripheral. A farm girl is first slut shamed, then while holding down multiple jobs and as a single mother has a baby, before embarking on a singing career in 1920's France. Agnes Varda or Eric Rohmer this is not. What someone as lowbrow as me suspects what high brow cinema looks like to middle brow critics. And It's painful too because I've sung the praises for Of God and Men for years and now I'm scared that maybe I was hoodwinked myself and if I went back to watch it now I'd see the same critic baiting superficiality in that film. I'm being too harsh on it for sure, but it has a feel of an bbc itv period drama - if someone in accounts accidentally added a 0 to the end of the budget. I guess what I sort of, kind of, really want to say is that this movie sux!

I also saw that Spanish or wherever film Wild Tails from a few years ago cos I love them foreign films like a proper sophisticate. And it was great fun. A bunch of little macabre stories dealing with themes of corruption, revenge, death and the escalation of stakes. All very well made and the black comedy mostly hits. A little frivolous, a lot of fun, nothing wrong here. This movie doesn't sux!

I see what you did there

Watched that Jack Reacher sequel last night and nearly fell asleep. Contrast that with the last Mission Impossible film and it's night and day. Boring character in a boring franchise full of boring ideas. Not sure why Cruise is even doing them.

How It Ends
A desperate man tries to return home to his pregnant fiancée after a mysterious apocalyptic event turns everything to chaos. This was ok. Well shot and I'm always up for an apocalyptic film, although this was less about that and more about the characters. Was quite unpredictable in places too but the ending just felt rushed and abrupt. Wasn't happy about that at all 6/10

Suspiria
Watched the original again as I remember quite enjoying it when I was a lot younger. Don't think it has aged well. The story is still a decent one and Argento does know how to create something amazing visually with thoughtful cinematography and lighting as well as creating an eerie mood with his music composition but the music and dialogue are mixed horribly, so you're left constantly adjusting the volume. I remember this being an issue the first time I saw it also. The acting, dialogue and character interactions also felt amateur most of the time. Still, it's worth watching for the visual experience alone. Hope the remake will be better 7/10

Justice League (2017)

Its like the avengers infinity wars but from the other company. Its funny, even the plot is the same shit. (bad guy needs to reunite several artefacts that will give him super powers). Not as good though. Instead of justice league, they should rename "Superman and friends".

5/10

Ready Player One (2018)

Really entertaining movie. Better than expected.

7/10

This is the only film I’ve ever fallen asleep at in the cinema, I don’t know if it was just the relaxing voice when it was the black screen with colourful blobs or just that I wasn’t loving it. I did lose track of what was going on due to the nap but I don’t feel like I could put myself through watching it again to remind myself what it was about.

Worst movie ever.

I watched The Big Short. I knew I shouldn't have. I had read the book. Why did I do this to myself?

8/10

The Possession
A young girl buys an antique box at a yard sale, unaware that inside the collectible lives a malicious ancient spirit. The girl's father teams with his ex-wife to find a way to end the curse upon their child. Remember thinking this was ok in the cinema but on re-watch, it's just bad. Every genre trope is checked off and just isn't scary at all, although there were a few decent scenes that at least tried to be inventive. Watching Negan try to do a crying scene is also funny 4/10

It has Margot Robbie in a bathtub

Aye but it's the kinda film that makes you feel quite miserable in the end. I had the same feeling after reading the book, even though it was a hugely informative and entertaining read. It's the feeling that you play a game that is rigged. A bunch of greedy wankers gambling away the cumulative savings of millions of people, committing fraud, causing massive suffering, while they not only walk away Scot free but also make so much money in the process that they are basically rich for life. It left a bit of a sickening taste

I am having trouble not only finishing, but continuing new Jurassic World. It's painfully dull and lame and stupid.

And one dino just shed a tear.

The first one was at least a bit entertaining, wasn't it?

Well, Park one was, for sure.

Summer Of 84
After suspecting that their police officer neighbor is a serial killer, a group of teenage friends spend their summer spying on him and gathering evidence, but as they get closer to discovering the truth, things get dangerous. From the guys that made Turbo Kid, this is another 80s style horror/suspense/mystery movie. I absolutely loved it. Does nothing too original but there's enough red herrings, twists, turns and an awesome ending that will have me remembering this movie fondly in years to come. I just wish the main group of friends were not so sterotypical and had a bit more conclusion in their story arc. Still, really enjoyed and recommend wholeheartedly 8/10

Hereditary was pretty memorable. One of the better horror films I've seen these last few years. The ending was plain weird, still a solid 8/10 for me.

Traffik
A couple off for a romantic weekend in the mountains are accosted by a biker gang. Alone in the mountains, Brea and John must defend themselves against the gang, who will stop at nothing to protect their secrets. Was not awful but quite run of the mill and doesn't push any boundaries. The protagonist was annoying as hell. This felt like the Hollywood take on Eden Lake, which is a much better movie 5.5/10

Alright Caf, I need a gritty raw gripping movie for tonight. Suggestions?

The Nun
I'm usually a big fan of these Wan-iverse horror movies but this was a major let down. Good acting and spooky atmosphere can't hide how under-developed the plot was, how boring it was and how lazy the scares were. Just one jump scare after another, not even thought out well, just stolen from other movies. Me, the wife and my brother watched it together and all of us dozed off at different points. The final act does spring into life, but by then it's a little too late 5/10
