Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

War dogs

0/10

Maybe my least favourite movie ever. Was too lazy to turn it off and watched the whole thing.

Full Metal Jacket

fecking brilliant. Think I preferred the first half to the second but it was all superb.

Are Superman v Batman or Justice League any good ? (I really enjoyed Man of Steel)
If you enjoyed Man of Steel then you'll probably also enjoy Batman vs Superman (Ultimate Edition, not original version). Justice League is very poor though unfortunately.

The drill seargent scenes are absolutely epic. A real Marine Corps drill instructor playing the same part in a film.

Yeah intoxicating performance. That part of the film flew by.

Ghostland

Loved it , the best horror I have seen in a good while, the acting was top notch.
One of the best psychological movies I've seen. Great twist!
Have to be honest I was expecting it to be the normal boring stuff to make you jump sort of horror, there was some of the jump stuff in there , but so much more.
This is a must watch for Horror fans.

8/10

I've stopped even trying to watch horror films. I don't think I've ever seen a good one. Certainly not in decades.

Great film. What didn't you like about it.

You mean the Superman film where Superman kills thousands of people, levels his home town and half of Metropolis, is brought up by a sociopath who tells him not to save drowning children, then inexplicably throws himself into a hurricane for no reason, and ends with Superman (the most honerable of all the Superheroes) violently breaking the neck of his enemy, whose only gripe was that Superman’s crazy biological dad was a nepotistic genocidal maniac, but who also managed to save his essence somehow, as a plot convenient ghost person thing, who could turn up at convenient moments because THIS FILM IS RIDICULOUS RAOUL, WHAT THE feck ARE YOU THINKING!!!?

And as @Archie Leach says, like all Synder’s films, it’s also a super dumb, white alpha male wankfest paen to Objectivism (his next project is an adaptation of The Fountainhead, as if to ram home the point) which is pretty much the very last thing that should ever philosophically be associated with fecking Superman...

Anyone who thinks it’s a good film, let alone a good Superman film, strikes me as the kind of Paul Ryan motherfecker who thinks American Psycho is a coming of age tale. Is that a good enough answer?

Where you standing on racism in America these days, btw? Still think it’s moot?

The plot was already known from the original Christopher Reeves film so if you liked that one then this is even better. The casting was great, amazing DP and production design work, top score from Zimmer, produced by Nolan. I don't think any fan of Superman could've hoped for a better reboot of the original tbh.

It’s complete and utter bilge, and largely considered as such. But whatever dude. You and the 4Chan Gamergaters are fighting the good fight!

This review is far too cynical and negative imo. The plot basics were already well known to anyone who grew up with the original film. The execution of this one was far better while simultaneously keeping the best elements of the original.

Man of Steel's one of those movies that felt like it was trying to emulate the success of Nolan's TDK trilogy but which came across as incredibly bland and meh instead. The ingredients are there for an alright movie...Shannon's a reasonably intense albeit hammy villain, Zimmer's on the score etc, and it's a solid cast in general etc, but it's largely nonsensical and ends with that thing where half a city gets destroyed and everyone's back to work the next day and all the turmoil is over with, rendering the entire thing pointless for the most part anyway.

The first half was Kubric's best work. The second half fell off a cliff

I still thought the second half was great - highlights both the mind-numbing aspects of military work and the brutality of the conflict. The sequence with the sniper towards the end is excellent.

But yeah, never quite manages to match the intensity and focus of the first half.

The Color of Pomegranates - When I watched a pretty bad rip of this years and years ago I wasn't ready for it, now when I rewatched the glorious restoration I found it spellbinding.

One thing I hated was that it obviously wasn't filmed in SE Asia or even the tropics. It is constantly distracting.

Then again I'm not a Kubric fan and I find almost all of his films irritating.

Ghostland
After surviving a brutal home invasion, a woman comes home to help her mother look after her estranged sister. Doesnt follow standard Hollywood narrative structure which made it interesting above the standard crap and the acting and set design was great. Did have some structural issues though that made me feel like the film was cheating and have convenient plot points. Plus too many jump scares that didn't work. Still a decent watch and terrifying in places 6.5/10

Truth Or Dare

A group must keep playing truth or dare and if they refuse, they die. The premise was fine although it felt like it was copying It Follows and generally it wasn't too bad but the final act completely shit the bed. Hopefully won't become a franchise 4.5/10

I really enjoy Man of Steel, glad we finally got to see a Superman film where he cuts loose, and what the collateral damage of two Superman level opponents going up against each other. His adopted father plot points were bizarre though.

I loved MoS and BvS.

Both had major plot flaws. But visually they were both epic. They both had scenes which bettered most marvel movies. They are basically the Paul Pogba of movies.

I enjoyed Man of Steel too, much more so than most Marvel films except maybe Thor Ragnarok and Deadpool.

If it was in my list with Marvel movies, it would probably be about half way, maybe pushing top 5. Marvel have released so many flicks now, but a lot of them are really solid. All the Russo Brothers stuff, but especially Winter Soldier, 1st Iron Man, Ragnarok, Dr Strange, 1st Guardians and Avengers films.

Beckton gasworks was a good sub for a warzone.

Incredibles 2

Saw this yesterday, it was actually part of a secret screening. before it they played a short called Bao - it was so strangely fcked up but funny - unintentionally I suppose. Still it was odd and weird.
Anyway, Incredible 2 is a fantastic sequel and fantastic movie. Given the wait, it well delivered.

I'll also throw my hat into the MoS enjoyment pile. It has a few flaws (action scenes were a bit of a mess in the final third), but the first half of the film was excellent imo.

The twist totally got me, did not see it coming.

Hereditary

1/10

A seriously fecked up film butwasn’t scary and the first 90 minutes almost sent me to sleep it was so boring

Ghostland is the same as "the incident in ghostland"?

I feel like I downloaded the Asylum version of the real movie.

Not too good so far... The smelling pussy part was funny though.

Had to stop at the 45 minute mark...hopefully the rest is better.
