Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

I think of him more as a businessman than a filmmaker really, an empty suit. At least Lucas and Spielberg started out as hardcore cinephiles (well, maybe only Lucas perhaps), Abrams was born into movie producing.

You're far too kind.

You know who he reminds me of? P. Diddy when he 'rapped'.

Watched The Hunt and Incendies last 2 nights. Don't know why I took so long (stuck in Hollywood probably), both brilliant movies.

Any recommendation for something similar?

Tomb Raider
Hollywood studio special. No story, forgettable set pieces, pandering to Asian market but ultimately a forgettable film. I liked all the scenes with Daniel Wu, he needed more screen time. I quite liked Alicia Vikander in the role, but Lara Croft needed bigger boobies 4/10

Logan Lucky - It's okay... very slow to start, but once it gets to the actual heist stuff, it's a lot of fun (if you switch your brain off)... unfortunately that takes up about 45 minutes of the film, and you still have an 1 hour and 15 minutes of other stuff to get through... which also includes one of the worst performances in a film you're likely to see from Hilary Swank.

Are you just looking for foreign films in general?

@R.N7 need your advice
Hmmm, seeing as the only common link really is that they're both Best Foreign Language nominees, I guess you could try some other nominees from recent years, like Son of Saul, Ida, Amour, A Separation, Y Tu Mamá También, Raise the Red Lantern, The Lives of Others or Waltz With Bashir. Look em' up and see if anyone strikes your fancy.

Pretty much. Watched very little foreign films (Oldboy and Infernal affairs being the exception).

Ah cool. Here are some of the best I have seen:

In The Mood For Love
The Handmaiden
The Great Beauty
Stalker
Aguirre, Wrath of God
The Skin I Live In
Throne of Blood
Fallen Angels

If you haven't seen Denis Villeneuve's other films then they're well worth watching as well. Sicario and Blade Runner 2049 in particular.

Much appreciated!

@Stringer watched all Villeneuve's movies. Great director.

Anyone remember that colourfully and beautiful late 70's horror movie, well here what it looks like when you squeeze all the colour out and drop it into a piss puddle

Watched Good Time the other day. Really fun, pulsating NYC crime drama. I'd watched countless interviews of the Safdie Brothers before seeing it and I'd come to love em as people. Also had the adverse affect of building the film up to such an extent it was always going to be slightly underwhelming. As good as Pattinson was (easily his best film I've seen), I would have loved to have seen more of Benny Safdie as Nik and of Jennifer Jason Leigh as the girlfriend Corey. I also felt they laid on the neon-soaked imagery a bit too thick, to the point where it lost it's allure. Definitely worth a watch, though. Some amazing set piece shots of New York.

In Guadagnino We Trust
Yeah in fairness I haven't seen any of Guadagnino work(I've been meaning to check Call Me by Your Name )so I could be completely wrong. And I never actually found the original that interesting in terms of story or really that scary so there's room for a different take at least.

I've got a brother who has similar problems as Nik and I was genuinely amazed at how Benny Sadie played the character. If the film was a bit to neon soaked check out their first ''big'' film Only Heaven Knows What, I would say it's better than Good Time.

A remake with similar lush colors and someone doing a knock off of Goblin's score would have been boring and pointless. A muted take with a different soundtrack (Thom Yorke is scoring it, his first movie soundtrack) is a much more interesting project.

Yeah possibly but we've had for over a decade ''mute/gritty'' movies., it would be nice to go into the cinema and see a bit of colour(It's almost the bog standard thing to do is). As for the soundtrack it will be interesting to what Yorke does but I'm not optimistic although that's mainly down to me finding both radiohead and Yorke solo stuff a bit shite :nervous:

I thought it was great too. The score is fantastic.

I'm sure there'll be some colourful compositions to admire. His previous films are very lush, reckon his sensualism will be a nice spin on Argento's sensationalism. Not a massive Radiohead fan myself but I do kinda like some of their more electronic stuff.

Annihilation - Meh... it promised so much, but I was pretty disappointed in the end. Sure it looks amazing, and there's one great scene when everyone's tied to chairs, but I just didn't care about anything going on, or any of the characters. The plot is just not there for me, and the structure of the film just did not work for me.

Put it alongside Arrival as another Sci-Fi film that everyone seems to like except me.

Most of the caf, me included, found it meh!

I did like Arrival though. Overrated, but still good.

Understandable that you would take it so personally.

A Quite Place.

Liked it a lot.
Acting was very good , especially from the kids.
A few things that could have been better , the back story, I wanted some who were they , how did they get there and why.
The nail , why leave it.
The Ending, did not like it.
But despite the faults , the film was very good , kept me on the edge of my seat all the time, living in total silence would be horrible.

The Hollow Child

A troubled foster teen, Samantha, works to expose a dangerous supernatural impostor in her new family and rescue her foster sister.
Child possessed by a devil causes trouble, its been done before and better.
The ending you could see a mile off.
The acting was poor at best.

2/10

The Nanny

A young girl, Noa, suspects her new nanny isn't from this world. Noa fights to reveal the nanny's identity, which is more twisted than she imagined in this dark fantasy tale.
It was pretty average, not a horror more of a Fantasy film.
Jamie Murray was good

Deadpool 2
I went in expecting something similar as the first one and got that in spades. It's more silly, over the top, profanity filled action. I laughed my pants of throughout much of the movie. Especially the serious and grumpy Cable is a hilarious fit imo. There's not much depth to the story and it's very hard to take the sentiments in the movie seriously, but if you're just looking for 2 hours of over the top action and Ryan Reynolds goofing around like an R rated jester, you won't be disappointed. At all.

120 Beats per Minute Incredible film about Aids activist group ACT UP in Paris. They did an impeccable job casting, but the young lead playing Sean puts in a show stealing performance. It's so well balances tragedy, defiance and euphoria. One of the best films I've seen. Must see!

Another Soul.

A couple on the run battle to save their daughter from possession by a demon.
Yet another bad possession film, the acting was terrible the story was terrible , the ending was even worse.
The only decent thing about the film was the music, it was creepy and atmospheric, but wasted on this film
Possession film are my favourite, but FFS why cant they make a good one !

Hotel Artemis

Watched it a few hours ago. I should've watched Deadpool 2 instead. Terrible movie with a weak plot that was all over the place.

Definitely one of the best films of the year, it's brilliant. @R.N7 have you seen it?

Is it that good?
I usually find it extremely difficult to sit through any movie longer than 2 hours unless it's really good.
Its less of a problem when I'm at the Cinemas but at home, it's really a chore.
This movie is 2 hours 24 mins, is it worth investing that much time into it?

Well given I've just said I think it's one of the best films of the year, yeah I'd say it's worth investing over 2 hours in it. You barely see the time flow when a film is good, which is the case here.
