Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

I like the sequel but yeah the bits where Deckard talks about his love for Rachael etc is easily the weakest part of the film

Well also the ''revolution'' part which was shite

I liked both bits. The revolution produced one of the best scenes where K discovered he wasn't the offspring of Deckard and Rachael. And this scene set the whole rest of the film up with K then choosing to react to knowing that he is just another replicant with very human choices. It is what made the whole film so very satisfying.

...maybe it was filmed as the old Noir female wanting to be dominated by a handsome bloke thing.
Yep, that may be it. Especially considering how the scene petered out (in a sexual sense).

The Greatest Showman I don't think you should watch this with an expectation of historical accuracy but it is surprisingly fun with very modern song and dance numbers. Not at all Disney or retro like La La Land). I expected to to be Meh but it was actually very enjoyable. I also suspect that it would make an even better stage musical. Perfect Friday night fare, fun without too much thinking necessary. 7.5/10

Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle All a bit pointless and if it wasn't for Jack Black playing a valley girl trapped in his body it wouldn't be worth watching at all. The stars are likeable enough I suppose but the bit where the brainy girl now in a sexier body gets taught how flirt to get past some bad guys (ignoring the fact she is a kung fu expert or whatever) is truly annoying. Don't waste your time. 4/10

I know as is often the case with reboots but I was really disappointed with Jumanji, the original was a lot of fun and there seemed to be genuine friendship between the characters. I thought the real world setting was a lot more interesting in the first film than actually being inside the game for this one, I don't think the Rock and Kevin Hart have quite as much chemistry as they think they do.

Yeah it works well as a way to show K doing possibly the most human thing of all - having agency(That's the word that came up when I googled smart words for making choices). The issue I had was that it felt sort of tacked on or at the very least rushed. Had the film set the potential revolution in background(Similar to say something like Children Of Men)rather out of end note of a plot twist, then I think it would have sat better with me.

I just like the quote as it shows why Ford hates the movie. But yeah that scene is clearly a rape scene and the fact that's it's played as a love scene(With the vangelis love theme over it) is sort of terrifying.

Ford had a hard time filming it but he only hated the original voiceover, not the film itself.

I strongly suspect it was planned as part of the third film in the series that might not now get made. Could be wrong.

You Were Never Really Here is a thriller that forgoes the visceral in favour of... well not very much at all. There is some standard psychological causation stuff - hinting towards childhood trauma and ex-serviceman PTSD - that atttempts to explain away the violence, and a lot of moody pauses and mumbling. It all felt very ponderous and superficial. The Jonny Greenwood (or whoever is imitating him) thing is starting to grate a bit on me. I reckon Ramsay is a skilled director with visual flair but Kevin (even though I liked the film) and now this film feel really empty. Ratcatcher was the high point.

Backcountry
An urban couple go camping in the woods and find themselves lost in the territory of a predatory black bear. Some really tense moments and the third act shows some visceral gore moments. Not bad considering it's probable low budget. Had a decent time 6/10

A pair of substandard horror films:

The Ritual (4/10)
Alright. All the characters are annoying, especially the podgy pillock. The ending was daft. Some good scary bits, an excellent blood curdling scream or two. Monster was creative but until the big reveal constantly reminded me of the knights who say ni.

A Cure for Wellness. (3/10)
A cure for sleeplessness. Picturesque but dull.

Saw A Quiet Place yesterday, thought it was OK, but not as good as I expected. Great idea for a film and a lot of tension at times, but not as good as I thought it was going to be.

Crimson Peak: Boring shite. My god this is tedious! Even the gorgeous sets don't make up for the fact I'll never get this two hours of my life back.

Rampage

It's a Rock movie with giant animals. Really fun.
8/10
I used to love that game on the Spectrum, but no idea how it will translate into an actual movie.

I'm watching Shin Godzilla - the brown creature has such stupid lifeless eyes.

It is just in awe of world.

Wow, such clean streets!

A Quiet Place. I was nicely tense through most of this and I think the general premise is great, but I was also constantly distracted by how stupid the main characters were. In an environment where so much organic tension could have been created, it felt like the writers had to design awfully clumsy pivot points for the action to move on. Doesn't go for jump scares, though, which I liked, instead it focused on a constant threat instead of tension-release-tension-release, and that was mostly refreshing. 7/10

Thoroughbreds. This is such a good time! It's not showing everywhere but please get to see it if you can. A neat allegory about teenage depression and apathy and the impacts they can have on a person, taken to their absolute extremes, with some fantastic dry comedy and an even more fantastic soundtrack. It's concerned with so much and yet gets through it in under ninety minutes. Also features the late Anton Yelchin in his final ever appearance as a hapless drug dealer with big ambitions. 8.5/10

Depends on your expectations I guess
I went in having not really played the game so I wasn't looking for references and such
Thus I enjoyed

Think it was claimed to be the best game to film adaptation
But I enjoyed the initial tomb raiders so there you go lol

Edit: if you're a fan of the rock defo watch
If you're not sure then depends if you like action and humour

I have fairly low expectations but it might be the kind of fun, brainless film I I might watch when I don't want something complicated.

:lol:I can take or leave The Rock, but agree on all other counts.

The Killing of a Sacred Deer Bizarre flat acting (I can only image from the instruction of the director) and an utterly nonsensical plot. Literally no aspect of it is explained (or explainable) as it wanders to an end as idiotic as the rest of the film. 2 hrs long and it seemed so much longer. -3/10
Literally an hour into this film and had to pop online to see if I ‘just don’t get it’. This is one of the biggest bits of nonsense I’ve ever seen. I hated Mother but at least the acting was good. I’ve always had an issue with Nicole Kidman, think she’s terrible, but I can’t work out if she’s wooden on purpose or if it really is this bad. Bloody awful movie

Beyond Skyline (2017)

Available on Netflix. Disappointing sequel to the panned sci-fi flick Skyline, (which wasn't the worst film I've seen) and featuring a host of unknowns and D-list stars that you've seen in other films but haven't got a clue who they are....that is apart from Antonio Fargas (Huggy Bear from Starsky & Hutch) and Iko Uwais (The Raid).

The sequel follows on from the first film and after introducing us to the new characters, picks up from where the last film ended; in the alien ship with the last two survivors: Jarrod who at this stage is now just a brain in an alien shell and his pregnant girlfriend.

Now, after initially having had some hope for the sequel, it wasn't long before I was reduced to groans with the oh so predictable sequences and unoriginal plot. The story is bad and so purely executed that you end up just wanting the aliens to simply wipe everybody out and put you out of your misery. The best thing about this film are some of the aliens and their tech, which are usually improved in sequels anyway.

But seriously, I can't convey just how ridiculous the plot is. You really have to sacrifice any semblance of realism and logic to go along with this film, a real mish-mash of tropes shamelessly hacked together in the name of film-making. Lazy writing resulting in a convoluted, contrived story with elements conveniently brought together just at the right time to move things along with the minimum of effort. Lacking the simplicity and character depth of the first film but ramped up in the effects and action departments, it still somehow falls flat. It leaves more questions than it answers, has you scratching your head at times but apart from a decent 10-minute smackdown during the final climax, it's a pretty dull affair.

The film makes no attempt to develop any of the characters like in the first film and instead chooses to focus on the action which to be fair to it, is pretty relentless though it won't leave you on the edge of your seat. Put Alien, Predator, Independence Day & War of the Worlds in a large bowl, dilute with plenty of water, mix for an hour and 45 mins and you get Beyond Skyline. A very frustrating and underwhelming affair, which with a bit more love and care could have been quite decent. You may just want to skip to the end for the blooper reel, which is quite funny though.

I'm giving this a 4/10.

PS. After waiting so long to watch Shin Godzilla, being subjected to all that political mumbo-jumbo and that awful expressionless monster during the first twenty minutes was more than I could take. I may give it another go though....maybe.

Shin Godzilla was soo good

No.

Godzilla .vs. Space-Godzilla is good. Godzilla .vs. Ghidorah is good.

Shin Godzilla is plain ridiculous. Fecking wouldn't expect the Japanese to botch a Godzilla origin story like that.

What an absolute arsewombat Refn is.

Freidkin is so great(Isn't there a story of him randomly shooting a pistol during the exorcist to keep the actors on ''edge'') . He's right as well, it take decades to see what film is a masterpiece.

All That Jazz (1979)

I loathe musical theatre but really enjoyed this. But Fosse does seem to be celebrating his life rather than admit to being a pig. The dance numbers are very good although I thought the finale was being dragged out. I think I can handle dance in small doses. Roy Scheider is one of my favourite 70's actors and he's great here.

Day Of The Dead: Bloodline
A small group of military personnel and survivalists dwell in an underground bunker as they seek to find a cure in a world overrun by zombies. Wow. So bad. Probably one of the worst films I seen this year. Romero must be rolling in his grave. Didn't give a shot about any character, awful awful movie. Avoid like the plague 1/10

Boys In The Trees

On Halloween 1997, two estranged teen skaters embark on a surreal journey through their memories, dreams and fears. Decent low budget horror/coming of age movie. Interestingly told and shot really well. The pacing was too slow though, was yawning a few times, plus it's about 20 minutes too long. But all in all, not bad 5.5/10

Beyond Skyline

A tough-as-nails detective embarks on a relentless pursuit to free his son from a nightmarish alien warship. I'm a fan of Frank Grillo and Iko Uwais so despite hating the original, I gave this a shot. Starts off quite well but quickly descends into stupidity. The plot structure is all over the place, flat characters and a storyline you just can't get into because it's completely inept. But, some decent effects for the budget and Iko Uwais is a kick ass martial artist so enjoyed those elements 5.5/10

Stephanie

An orphaned young girl with unworldly powers is taken in by a man and woman who claim to be her parents.
It was a decent watch, the young girl who played the lead was excellent.
The ending was a bit meh,but worth watching

5/10

Shin Godzilla (2016)

Well, I finally sat through it. And dear Lord, what a pile of poop! Probably one of the worst incarnations of Gojira to be committed to film. During a film that runs for nearly 2 hours, Godzilla's actual screen time can't be any more than 30 mins? The rest of the film is just mindless babble amongst a group of politicians and military men wading through protocol and bureaucratic red tape before deciding any course of action against a giant monster rampaging through Tokyo.

Sorry, did I say rampaging?? That was the exaggeration of the century! Considering Godzilla doesn't really do anything of note...even when under full-on assault from the Japanese forces. You would have thought in this day and age that the Japanese filmmakers would have come up with something to rival the US productions whilst retaining that Toho vibe that we all love.

But the film is crap. I find it hard to highlight any redeeming qualities about it. Even the effects are naff and the film is devoid of any action or excitement whatsoever. I'm so glad I didn't pay to watch this at the cinema. Sky Cinema gives this 4/5 stars?? Wow!

I'm giving this a 2/10.

Asylum of Fear

When a team of paranormal investigators is hired to inspect a soon-to-be demolished mental institution, they discover horrifying clues that reveal the cause of a violent massacre by an insane doctor in the 1960's.

It been done before , creepy old Hospital , bunch of daft kids , ghosts and a nutter.
Typical haunted Hospital stuff.
Not the worst I have watched but not the best, some decent parts but they are few and far between.
If you have nothing else to watch then maybe.

4/10
