Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Watched the book of Eli

Did that plot really need Denzel’s character to be blind at the end?

1974: La Posesion De Altair
A newlywed couple disappeared in 1974, their 8mm tapes reveal one of the most horrifying events in Mexican history. I'm quite a fan of found footage when done right and also enjoy a good possession movie so when I saw the trailer for this, I was super excited. But this reminded me how deceiving trailers can be sometimes. Whilst the film was decent and had a great style (8mm is very creepy in found footage format), it had the usual problems that usually accompany this sub-genre. The end also was a WTF moment. Completely from left-field and felt so tacked on. Regardless, I enjoyed it, better than most found footage and possession films I have seen recently. Just didn't live up to the trailer 7/10

Just saw Red Sparrow. Quite enjoyed it! It's good if you can overlook Jennifer Lawrence poor attempt at a Russian accent.

Chinatown (1974)

A great film, and Dunaway is marvellous.

9/10

And if, like me, you find the ubiquitous creepy staring and endless dramatic pauses more amusingly naff than artistically evocative, the whole thing kinda loses its punch.
Ever since I learned the best to act these scenes, just look bored and let the audience project onto it, those shots just make me visualise the actor walking on the stage wondering what's for lunch.

10x10 - The premise sounded good and other than some slightly suspicious acting this film starts off alright only to descend into an accidental comedy in it's purest form. Don't touch this turd with a barge pole even if your name is Dirty Pauldy's Tache. 1/10

Ordinary People. I thought this was an excellent film with fine performances. It might be the most honest and recognisable portrayal of mental (un)health I've seen on film. Time, therapy, prescribed medication or wash basins through windows are no guarantee to wellbeing, and people don't just get better in service to character arcs and story. Instead we are shown pain and emptyness and continued struggle. The burden these things place on oneself and the negative effects they have upon others are shown in rare, raw detail.

My only criticisms would be that the mother could have been shown a little more sympathy. The character is fine but these people suffer too, even as they inflict on others. Also the story and characters work without the son's sense of direct responsibilty for his brothers death. It felt a tad too contrived to heap that on him after everything else.

It won OSCARs, but don't let that put you off, it's actually good. Raging Bull has panache and a performance, but its human struggles are all by way of fake blood and pasta binges.

Avengers: Infinity War - yeah, look, it's pretty good. I could complain but it was a brisk 160 minutes and I enjoyed myself. Chris Hemsworth has become the best thing about this series.

A Quiet Place - John Krasinski makes good use of an intriguing premise. The plot is filled with questionable decisions (maybe cum on her back next time) but its tense and short so I can forgive it.

Avengers: Infinity War - Entertaining enough, definitely worth a watch if you like that sort of thing. Surprisingly, it didn't seem too cluttered considering there are so many characters floating about.
Not half as good as the fanboys are claiming, but it's up there with the better Marvel based films.

3 Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri: Not sure what to make of it if I'm honest. It was entertaining, a little bit silly and the conclusion left me a bit underwhelmed. Francis Mcdormand and Sam Rockwell were very good, as was Woody Harrelson. It was nice to see the cgi deer from The Walking Dead get another role too.

Avengers: Infinity War - 9/10
Thoroughly enjoyed this. It's the best Avengers movie till date. The action was good, comedy moments were good, dialogue was good and that ending definitely wasn't the normal endings you see in superhero movies these days.

I was forced to watch Batman Ninja on a hangover the morning after passing out on someone’s sofa, and it was possibly one of the most distressing moments in my life. You know that cliche that every anime move becomes an LSD fever dream in the 3rd act? Well imagine that, but for like, almost an entire film, and with Batman characters for some reason.

It’s almost a perfect storm of bizarre Japanese cinematic stereotypes, to the point I’d have likely considered it hugely racist were it not actually written and produced by the Japanese. At one point it even goes full “Yo yo, let’s go, Protect My Balls!”... and I don’t think(?) it was meant to be funny.

A normal person might reasonably think that the “Ancient Feudal Samurai” genre, the “Giant Mecha Transforming Robot” genre, and the “OMG I’ve taken too much acid, why are all these colours and shapes attacking me!? headfeck anime” genres would be hard to meld into one cohesive piece, especially in an ostensibly kid friendly super hero cartoon. And you would most certainly be right. But for reasons that baffle and haunt me, someone has tried. It’s like Batman vs Superman meets Transformers meets Paprika meets Monkey. Don’t take drugs kids. But if you do, don’t watch this nonsense alone!

I watched it in pretty much the exact same state and you've managed to put my scrambled thoughts about it into words better than I'm able to.

The Body Tree

When a group of Americans travel to Russian Siberia to honor the memory of their murdered friend, they uncover a plot that threatens all their lives.
Well shot , the acting was not horrible , well most of it.
Murder Mystery / Horror thats ok

Time Trap

A group of students venture into the deep caves of remote Texas to locate a favorite archaeology professor who inexplicably has gone missing while searching for the Fountain of Youth. In the course of their pursuit, the group unwittingly rappels into a break in the space-time continuum, where time passes much slower than on the surface. With no hope for rescue, they descend further into the cave and uncover the most coveted urban legend in history and find themselves in the crossfire for its control.
I thought this was fantastic, not seen anything like this before, would of like them to tell more at the end, but did not stop me enjoying it.
This is very much worth watching, One of the best Science Fiction films I've seen in a while with a totally unexpected plot and ending.

8.5/10

Seems there is only a HC rip out, how is the quality?

Winchester

Ensconced in her sprawling California mansion, eccentric firearm heiress Sarah Winchester believes she is haunted by the souls of people killed by the Winchester repeating rifle.
A very good ghost story, well written well acted, Jason Clarke and Helen Mirren both excellent and has the possessed boy Finn Scicluna-O'Prey, the music made the film feel even more creepy.
I thought this was a very solid ghost story , had enough to keep me watching, very spooky in places.

There should be a support group for people like us. It's kinda what I imagine Vietnam was like. Only with less physical danger, and a lot more weird Batman shit.

The Greatest Showman was quite good. It plays too young and too clean for my tastes but I thought it had a couple of decent numbers. The bar deal and the cord lisse being particularly good. As a portrait of PT Barnum it just isn't, although clearly it never tries to be. Which is fine. The story isn't particularly special and it plays more like an episode of Glee than Browning's Freaks. I did wonder whether, given a darker, more critical script and peak Burton-Elfman or even Gilliam at the helm it could have been really something. But that said, overall I found it a sporadically entertaining show.

There are some slightly dodgy themes - if followed through to their conclusions. I'm thinking mainly of Barnum as the Kiplingesque white, able-bodied saviour. However the overall historical sketchiness and frivolous tone make these things difficult to get too worked up about. And certainly it is less ideologically perverse than the orgiastic, militarist violence Marvel slop out every summer.

You have a link with English subs? I can't find the subs for the rip I am getting.
I got the subs separate. See if that works... or send me the file name of your video and i'll give you the subs I had as they perfectly matched the movie.

Avengers: Infinite War
Not bad but after Deadpool, Logan and Ragnarok, this felt a step backwards. The villain was ace and there were some funny lines but it felt super long and I need a bit more originality. Still a decent film for fans 7/10

Den Of Thieves

A gritty crime saga which follows the lives of an elite unit of the LA County Sheriff's Dept. and the state's most successful bank robbery crew as the outlaws plan a seemingly impossible heist on the Federal Reserve Bank. Above average cops and robbers movie. Thought the final act was a bit dumb but until then, it was a fun ride 6.5/10

Pet Semetary

Behind a young family's home in Maine is a terrible secret that holds the power of life after death. When tragedy strikes, the threat of that power soon becomes undeniable. Seen this for the first time and thought it was completely stupid. The guy just keeps making the same mistakes, though I think that might have been the theme, regardless, I just couldn't connect. Shame considering there were some really creepy moments peppered in 4.5/10

Different studios and not connected at all.

Not seen this for a good few years, but I seem to remember quite liking it.
May just have to watch it again.

Winchester
Ensconced in her sprawling California mansion, eccentric firearm heiress Sarah Winchester believes she is haunted by the souls of people killed by the Winchester repeating rifle. Loved the cinematography and set design and had some great performances but too many predictable jump scares and less time spent creating a creepy atmosphere make this a glossy horror movie that I'll probably forget quickly. I had a dream recently that I was seduced by Helen Mirren and I tapped that... can't look at her the same since  Anyway... some creepy moments but overall pretty flat 4.5/10

A Quiet Place

Decent movie with a ridiculous plot but some good scares nonetheless. If your lives pretty much depended on not making a sound, you wouldn't leave some very young brats to their own devices cause kids are gonna do what kids do.

Still, once you get past that basic fact, you get a fairly original lowbrow horror. Without wasting time on the whys and wherefores, we follow a family trying to make the best of a very bad situation where they literally have to not make a sound to survive. The story is a bit too contrived (daughter with hearing loss and imminent birth) for my liking but engrossing nonetheless. Some genuine jumps at times and even though you know it's coming you still can't help wincing at one point.

Emily Blunt is great as always but the daughter was not very convincing. The creatures are very menacing but let down by poor CGI. Enjoyable and better than a lot I've seen recently.

I'm giving this a 7/10.

Avengers: Infinity War

The culmination of years of the Marvel superheroes on the big screen brings us to this disappointing effort which just seems to be more of the same old stuff. I get that the film had to be lengthy in order to give the 20-odd superheroes some decent screen time but it just made the whole thing a bit of a mess. The only redeeming character in this film is Thanos himself who gets more than the one dimensional development bestowed upon his adversaries.

The problem I have with the Marvel universe is that most of the 'superheroes' aren't really that super but just regular guys with enhanced technology. Even the more advanced heroes like Thor, Vision and Star-Lord were undercooked in this movie, not really showcasing their true potential. Even the mighty Hulk didn't put in an appearance of note.....and Iron Man's tech is just getting plain ridiculous!

This should have been the movie where they really get to kick butt but instead we see them repeatedly getting their asses handed to them. Perhaps Infinity War II will right all of these wrongs, but I'm not holding my breath. Yeah the action scenes are great but I suppose you can only do so much with a 12A. I want carnage of the GOT kind!

Still the 2 1/2 hours fly by quickly enough and sets things up nicely for Pt II. They'll have to make more room for Ant-Man, The Wasp and Captain Marvel. At least the humour was more subdued in this film to keep in line with the overall darker tone but the funny bits were quite funny and not too cheesy. I think all the comedic lines should go to Drax to be fair. Overall, not a bad movie but not brilliant either. I'm thinking the DC storylines have potential to be more spectacular but I'll have to watch Justice League again. The only films I've really enjoyed so far are Thor, Thor: Ragnarok, Ant Man, Deadpool, Man of Steel and Wonder Woman.

I'm giving this a 7/10.

Ready Player One

There is now a type of person out there, who has genuinely come to believe that being good at computer games/the internet, makes them some kind of genius, who is superior to other human beings. Grown adults, living in their mum's attic/spare room, offering nothing of actual value to society whatsoever, lording their superiority over you with irrelevant cult film references, and ability to shoot you in the face in some computer game you haven't dedicated 5,000 hours of your life to.

This film is a 2 hour attempt to ram this pretence down your throat in a vaguely entertaining and yet somehow almost constantly insulting way. Encouraging real life super nerds to carry on not sorting their lives out by giving them the perception of being cool. Creating a fictional scenario where being good at computer games makes you relevant in the real world, which is so farfetched it is a completely pointless exercise, and also at no point actually explains why anything that's happening, IS relevant in the real world. It just for some reason is.

The film's attempts to portray the characters as uber smart nerds with Einstein level thinking power, falls down on such instances as expecting you to believe than none of them, for a period of years, could figure out to try going round a computerised racing track backwards. Even though if you play literally any racing game online, there is ALWAYS some prick doing this for no other reason than to be annoying.

Added to this, a sub plot of trying to tell you about people's inner beauty, by having the main character fall in love with a girl, who he only knows from her internet persona, then not caring when the real life version of her, instead of being good looking, is...erm, good looking, but with a cool looking mark on her face, or something. So basically the message is "It's your inner beauty that matters, as long as you're not ugly"

A generous 4/10 - Reminded me of when I played Destiny on the PS4...could have been fun. Instead it's just an annoying experience of realising you've become too much of a grown up to understand what on earth is going on.

A Quiet Place - Pretty much stumbled onto this by accident looking for something to watch at the cinema with there not really being loads of options right now and really enjoyed it. It was definitely something interesting and it felt pretty new and fresh. It was strange/eerie being sat in the cinema watching a movie with almost no sound for the majority. Solid 8/10
